Video Assistant Referee (VAR)

A thread to basically bash the referee that has spoiled your teams game this weekend. I'm sure we'll have a lot of traffic coming through here due to the shocking standards that the Premier League has and I've chosen to stick this in the ''General Football'' section as I'm sure that officiating isn't a million miles better on the continent.

Did Martin Atkinson award a penalty for a horrendous dive? Did Vicandi Garrido send off Lionel Messi for simply spilling his blonde hair dye? Vent all of your frustration in here people - you'll feel much better afterwards.

Think it says a lot that there's been no activity in this thread xD. Maybe that'll change in Chelsea vs Utd in the FA Cup tonight.

I'll kick off though. Watching Real Madrid vs Real Betis last night. Keylor Navas should have seen red for taking out Brasanac outside the area when he was through on goal. And there were a couple of dubious offside calls, one of which Ronaldo scored from but he was level with the defenders.

Carragher and Neville programme called 'The Referees' showing on Sunday on SS1 at 7pm. Looks like they live the life of a referee for a day when referees aren't at a match. Fitness test and referee tests. Looks like a good watch.

Also saw an ad for Ref: Stories From The Weekend on BT Sport 1 to be shown on Tuesday at 10.30pm. Includes footage from lower league, grass-roots level refereeing and female referees officiating in men's games.

Both will be an interesting watch no doubt.

I just can't deal with general inconsistency in a game. I cannot be arsed when one side is getting free-kicks for something that the other side isn't. It happens a lot as well.

I can forgive mistakes that are hard to call. I do feel for refs when it comes to things like penalties as the odds are stacked against them, in a culture where the vast majority of players cheat and actually train to be good at cheating you can kind of sympathise with them getting it wrong, sometimes. But general inconsistency and bias? I can't deal with that.

And for that reason I thought Roger East was utter shit in our last game.

did you watch 'Ref - Stories From The Weekend' on BT Sport?

Some female officials saying that away from the pitch, after matches, players have said they will never be able to respect a woman as an official.

Mind-blowing really when they're just doing their job and it's something they've chosen to do as it's their passion or love for the game.

To be fair footballers are hardly the advertisement for what a normal down to earth human being should think.

Whenever Sian Massey has ran the line at Selhurst i've never really noticed her because she's doing a good job. If a female is athletic enough to keep up with the pace of a Premiership game I have no problems with them officiating matches. Infact it may be a good thing as most of the footballers who feel it's fine to shout obscanities in a referee's face because they didn't get a decision may think twice about doing it if the referee was a female.

I did, it's what got me thinking about the topic to be honest.

Wasn't that the scientist woman who had to be escorted off the field after a brawl broke out? There's no wonder why there's a lack of new officials with that kind of behaiour, it's slightly off topic but I was appalled at the treatment the old bloke got when he was knocked to the ground and needed about a dozen stitches to fix his face.

I'm not surprised by a select few not respecting a woman as an official but I can't understand the mentality.

i was even more surprised to hear that it was a 12/13 year old :o

No testosterone filled bloke is going to take a 150cm tall skinny woman seriously. That isn't even cultural, the same would apply to a tiny bloke.

Aye I'm sure 6'2 athletes in peak physical condition are shiteing themselves when confronted by men who look like substitute maths teachers.

There is a female ref in the 2. Bundesliga and she's been doing a good job for 10 years already. In fact, she had the best rating of all 20 referees in the 2nd division last season (official referee ratings by DFB), but is still not allowed to "upgrade" to the 1. Bundesliga.

Is that because of her gender?

Officially, of course not haha. The only person from DFB who commented on it said that she was apparently not among the best two seasons ago, the others refused to comment.

As in many cases it depends on who suits the job. Regardless of gender, ethnicity or other factors you should pick the best for the roles you're trying to fill. In the future I'd expect more females to emerge as officials but the predominance of men in line with tradition would more than likely continue for various reasons.

Bibiana Steinhaus! She'd be a decent enough referee for the Bundesliga. There's also Riem Hussein who officiates matches in the 3. Liga. I'm pretty sure she was also a linesman(woman) in the 2. Bundesliga a few times, or I'm mistaking her for someone else. Edit: I was mistaken. The assistant referee I meant was Katrin Rafalski.

It'd be great to see a woman in the Bundesliga. It's always weird to read comments like "women don't beling into men's football", which is always the case when there's a Facebook article about a female referee. Do they feel threatened or what?

I wouldn't. Pawson made a terrible call sending Vardy off earlier in the season and that wasn't overturned either. Huddlestone as well a couple of weeks ago was on the end of a very harsh one that wasn't overturned.

Actually thought Madley had a good game today.

That's confusing as fuck when reading it xD

I hope it doesn't rely on confirmation bias as a standard of success - so if it does end up on 58% as Harv says, then what? Do they deem it as a success because it's a marginal, insignificant decrease?

What next? A toin coss for every penalty? Rock paper scissors if it's a draw after 5 penalties each?

Generally in lazy unscientific corporate research 5% is regarded as significant. Anything else isnt. Probably why they consider 60% to be too high and have assumed that it means there is an advantage with the gap being above 5%.

I thought the change would be something substantial, not a slight change in order FFS

I think it's fine as it is, though if it were up to me it would be more like hockey. The ball is placed by the ref on the far edge of the D, the keeper starts in his 6 yard box, the taker starts where he want (generally will be over the ball) and has 5 seconds to put it in the net.

sounds similar to what they did in the MLS. one on one situation with player starting from the halfway line. shambles.
