  1. It’s an argument that’s much better suited to the US than the UK. The US often asks their police departments to do things that in the UK would be handled by social workers. That’s shit these police aren’t trained for. And on top of it, these police in the US are well armed and, certain departments are particularly militarised and quick to shooting first upon feeling any “threat” - plus the whole American racism component added to the mix. That’s not to say there might not be a need for police reform in the UK (because chances are, there probably are - there’s usually room for reform in anything tbh), or that there aren’t problems with racism in the UK (there definitely are)... ...it’s just that the “Defund the Police” idea (which I think is a shit tag line, because it’s a more complicated thought than that - it’s defunding police to direct some other funding for adequate social services so police only have to focus on policing) doesn’t fit the UK as well as it does in the US.

  3. I never said anyone was attached to Starmer. I said that there is crap posted in here that is detrimental to the Starmer cause which is a Labour government. I've raised this before on here when Corbyn was incharge, the way some express certain attitudes around weak arguments is symbolic of what pushes people to Johnson. I'm also well aware that if I wanted to change someone's mind saying they talk crap would not be the way to do that. That itself is the same thing in a more crude form. This is a publishing platform. It can be read by members and guests who don't reply, but the posts sometimes look like the sort of bonding session 6 pints in I've had many times in Westminster and Soho. You start to talk crap and hatred that gets likes because there's no one to pull you up on it. It's not about agreeing with everything the Labour Party says. It's not about promoting their point regardless. It's about recognising you're associated with Labour, like it or not, and thus should be thinking on a publishing platform and is the argument tight enough to pull support in or is it pushing people away. It's no good contributing to a culture of pushing people away for years then complaining that the Conservatives won. Imagine you're a potential swing voter who went Conservative in 2019. Suspend your agenda and think about the reasons why. Think about the attitudes and thoughts that you can compromise on. That can be palatable. Think about what isn't palatable to them and whether you can be gentle around it without compromising your position. When Johnson said freedom loving the responses on here were weak arguments, the kind that reinforces the conservative vote.

  4. The people who let down the Black Lives Matter movement are the actual organisation Black Lives Matter. We all agree with the movement but the organisation themselves are actual extremists. The policing system in America is in need of actual reform. Can you say the same about the UK? I wouldn't personally. The Labour Party needs to be a governing party. A governing party can't just be activists and the majority of the electorate don't want activists governing them. The thing with Starmer is he can't win either way when it comes to the loud minority on social media. When he took a knee and posted it on social media in support of BLM he was accused of pandering to Corbyn's woke brigade. When he wasn't there at the front of the march on Whitehall he was accused of being "Blue Labour" and pandering to those causing the problem. Luckily for him, the majority of voters aren't involved in the culture war of Twitter and the internet. As far as most voters are concerned, and I'm not saying I'm in their camp, both Starmer and Johnson reflected their views on Black Lives Matter in that the movement has merit and the protests were legitimate but it didn't require a heated conversation about tearing down statues, defunding the police and rewriting school curriculums in the middle of a worldwide pandemic.

  5. I spent some time teaching in Germany in Gelsenkirchen and got to know many of the young players in the early 20's. Have been a fan of 04 since 1949 when I first visited the area on a Youth Exchange from Yorkshire hence my tag name! When Timo was at Stuttgart he was always a threat but German football and defenders area different from those in the PL. His time at Leipzig prospered from the fact that Poulson took most of his stick and gave him so many chances and no one in the German National team does that - hence his lack of success there! I have no problems with his abilities -they are first class, but he hides too often when the going gets tough and I fear that he is no Drogba who can take it and give it back! The few times I met him with my young friend Andy Beck he was the sort of guy you wanted to spend time with - polite, respectful and funny, buy football needs hard guys up front - not diving whimps like the little fellow at City who last night should have been carded in the first minute and then got kicked about and the ref didn't believe it once and like most other refs have had enough of hid 'cheating'. I really do wish him well, but the pressure will be on him every week and I am not sure he will cope with that! Anyway my lot have far more problems to consider at the moment someone would rescue my young ex pupil Max and get him away from Woy Hodgson! C'st La Vie. Oh and for a final comment - I can see the lights of Elland Road from my bedroom window when they are on! Take care, stay safe and sei nett!

  6. We still have a week left in the window so I'd imagine they want two out of three based on what @Carnivore Chris just said as there seems to have opened up a lot of gaping holes which they didn't have before (albeit filled with players past their prime). And you're correct with those high salaries moving out they'd definitely be able to balance the wage bill better because I doubt any of Gini, Dest or Depay are coming in at what Suarez was getting.

  8. 2 to 3 years in normal time or in Elon Time? In all seriousness, it's good to see progress in battery tech. If I'm reading this correctly, then this tabless cell design will not only increase range and be cheaper to produce but will also allow for tighter packaging without separate cooling system, so that's definitely good news.

  9. @nudge https://arstechnica.com/cars/2020/09/how-tesla-plans-to-make-batteries-cheap-enough-for-a-25000-car/ Great to see from Tesla and the tech usage could even bleed down to other electronic tech from a usage standpoint. I'd love to see them integrate it into a 25K car one day but I think we're about two to three years away from a road-ready model.

  10. In the UK, it’s definitely a stupid fucking idea. The way you explain it in the US though has some merit, especially when they so often act as judge, jury and executioner.

  11. Got a letter from the DHS about our yearly flu jabs and advise to get the jab because of the Coronavirus and to contact the local surgery to make an appointment that we use then we received this text message this morning Found out a lot of surgeries are not doing jabs because they are getting inundated with people wanting the jab so a lot of alternative places like Town Halls etc are doing the flu jab and the nearest one for me and the wife is Easter Road Hibernian football stadium, the funny bit is our son was going to get the jab and because he is staying with us he will have to go there and he is a Hearts man and Hibernian are Hearts fiercest rivals, he was not happy about going there for the jab.

  13. Gutted I'm missing this. BT Sport used to air some Turkish games but I think that's only because of lockdown and other football wasn't being played. No doubt it'll be a feisty one. Was looking at this game as a potential for the next one in the First Goal competition. Am I right in thinking Fenerbahce don't have a particularly good record in away at Gala...

  15. I don't think there's much point blaming wrongdoers mate there will no doubt be a correlation to that but the bottom line is this virus is a nasty piece of work and seems to spread like wildfire, particularly in the most densely populated areas and morso as the weather turns, and good measures will allow it but not stop it. This is what happened in Melbourne where we locked down early in March and got to literally zero Covid cases over multiple weeks in late May. Then 1 hotel manager and security guard from the airport arrivals quarantine hotel got sick and it surged back out into the community through a cool winter with 20,000 confirmed cases and 800 deaths We initially went to a stage 3 lockdown which meant only prep and final year high school students learning on site and all others from home, similar with remote work etc. After 5 weeks that did not significantly bend the curve so we went to hard lockdown. Other parts of Australia did the same thing the first time round, and kept it away all winter and it still hasn't returned. As I see it the European economies have a call to make this winter and it will be whether they are prepared to lock down harshly again or take a more Sweden-like approach and lock down what you can without going to the same extreme as before (and sustain a second wave at least as bad as the first).

  16. Labour having, rightly or wrongly, decided it was tired of a leader who had an opinion on everything, has decided to go for a leader who has no opinions at all. He also fails to realise that pandering to the right only makes sense if the other guys are pandering to the left. If the pandering only ever goes one way then we end up an insular, mollycoddled, smooth-brained electorate that votes us into the types of disasters like we've experienced for the last decade.

  18. Microsoft's stance now is to move as much as it can to GamePass. It opens the accessibility block for gamers who never played these titles and want to start playing them. Moreover, we're still going to see Bethesda doing titles for other consoles (PS5) with Deathloop and Ghost:Tokyo because they clearly said that both those were in development before the acquisition. They will port them over at a later date. I think this is good for the gaming community because now you have a company with a rich history of cross-platform gaming going to a service-based delivery system backed by another company that has proven it works. I think PC gamers have so much to be happy about now with the plethora of choices at hand in Steam, GamePass, etc that this is the future of gaming. Sony and Nintendo don't think so and have curiously stayed away from this but we'll see them make the move too once they start coming to terms with how they sell and market their flagship games (none of them are particularly good multi-player but the single-player is of elite quality).

  19. If Semedo leaves though then a right back is massively needed, as Sergi Roberto is seriously poor and there is literally nobody else. There needs to be atleast a defender brought in as well as there is nobody there. It's a Championship defence at best. Umtiti(who needs selling anyway) is going, Tobido is going out on loan again...So where are the defenders? Then if Carles Aleña and Puig are loaned out, then that leaves an injury prone Pjanic, a slow past it Busquets and then de Jong, who is of course brilliant and one of the few positives about this side. Where is the depth in this area? A number 9? If you're selling Suarez, then it has to be in order to bring in a top number 9, or do the club think that a Championship player in Braithwaite is going to do the business? A lot of young players impressed during pre-season, but are going to be hurled out of the club in order to play 30+ year old players who were the problem last year. Suarez still offers more than any number 9 at the club. Whether he's not at his best or not, there isn't any other options, yet he's been thrown to the curb as if he was just a player, rather than the third top scorer in the club's history. The way he's been treat is a joke. The main ones who needed moving on from are Pique(but then I've said this for years now, so what's the use), Sergi Roberto, who might be from the youth system, but has never been a Barcelona player, Alba(still offers something, but can't play at his A game all the time anymore), and Busquets, who like Alba, can still offer something, but fresh legs are needed. de Jong is the perfect Busquets replacement and now it's about bringing in players to compliment him, or better yet, bleeding young players in. Arthur has been sold without any form of replacement. If a 30 year old Pjanic is that man, then that is embarrassing. I was thinking Puig would be the replacement with Pjanic replacing Rakitic/Vidal in the squad, but Puig has been thrown to the side, Aleña has....Where are all the replacements? Where is the squad? I thought the whole reason for selling Arthur was because of faith in Puig in the first place? Also Semedo isn't perfect and lacks consistency, but he's far better than Sergi Roberto and unless you have plans of brining in a player to improve this area, then it makes no fucking sense. The club don't have the money at the moment, but since that's the case, then you replace Pique and Sergi Roberto first(along with Rakitic, Vidal, Umtiti....) not Suarez and Semedo. They could be improved on, but if it comes to choices, then it makes sense to strengthen the areas that MOST need it.

  21. Don't really know how best to describe it... It has horror related stuff in it but not the kind of horror that would put you off, although maybe episode 3 you might find a bit creepy but then again maybe not... Such a mix of strange things that seem to blend really well together... Basically it's about a black man called Atticus Freeman who returns home from the army and embarks on a search for his missing father in 1950's America.. and along with trying to overcome the racist attitudes of the time they also end up fighting monsters and magic along the way.. Might all sound a bit odd but it has one long running story and little stories in each episode that help fill in the blanks while they piece together the mystery... Has treasure hunting elements to it and I have also heard a couple of Marylin Manson tracks already... It also stars Michael K Williams who you may remember played Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire... Would suggest watching the first 2 and see what you think... personally I am enjoying it
