  1. Democrats and Republicans both have establishment figures which have the ear of big money. Republicans bend towards tax cuts for corporations. Democrats slow walk stuff, winning the left wing vote but slow walking the economic side of things. Mental health issues increasing in prevalence might explain why gun deaths are trending up. But they don't explain why America has 50 times the rate of gun deaths as the UK. Both parties offer more in rhetoric than substance on the front of globalisation. They both act sympathetic to the idea of American jobs and will make some noisy announcements to placate their base but both understand inevitability, and conservatives are stern believers in markets and that government should stay out of that sort of shit. The two party system is worse in America than elsewhere imo.
  2. I think De Santis will only have a chance if Trump is indicted tbh. If Trump contests the primary hell be hard to beat and if he loses he'll make De Santis his worst enemy and end up tearing him apart all the way through. Can't see dems winning with Biden. Maybe klobuchar would make a contest of it. Or some other senator.
  3. It's still sinking in. 13 states will imminently have banned abortion from the moment of fertilisation. The only exception common to all states is to save the life of the mother. If a 12 year old is raped by her grandpa... 9 of 13 states say carry to term. If a baby is diagnosed with a lethal birth defect and is guaranteed to die in birth. 12 of 13 states say Carry. To. Term. What a nightmare for the mental health of the parents.
  4. Are you aware of what's actually happening now though? The states shown below are implementing bans on abortion. Not curtailments. For example Texas, which previously legislated a 6 week limit on abortion now has a law coming in 30 days that will outright ban all abortions from the moment of fertilisation with the only exception being to save the life of the mother.... Rape and incest are not sufficient grounds for an abortion.
  5. So you view that the likely outcome, and the reason for all this passion from the conservative side is to prevent abortions between 24 and 39 weeks and that's all this is about? You expect the US states to land sensible laws that put them in the middle of the pack on a global scale?
  6. I'm pretty sure this is false. Can you provide some supporting evidence? How does the US law compare to Canada or Australia?
  7. The main reason this is being televised is to prepare the public for charges being laid.

    Cricket

Horrible news. What a horrific year for Australian cricket
  9. Water bucket? What time does this okay In a nuclear blast?
  10. Thurgood Marshall was the first African American Supreme Court justice, and the most liberal justice in court history, who retired from the bench in 1991, and died 3 years later. When he retired he was replaced by Bush senior with Clarence Thomas, the most conservative justice ever. If he'd waited a year to retire he'd be replaced by Clinton, and his replacement would have been liberal and then voted for Gore over Bush. So much would be different. Climate change action, and the makeup of the current court. Probably even the Iraq war doesn't happen.
  11. The disheartening thing about the supreme court is how long it will stay like this... 6 Conservatives, 3 liberals. The eldest Conservatives are Thomas 73, Alito 72, and chief Roberts 67, who's verging on becoming a liberal at this point as the only one who seems to care about the long term credibility of the court. None of them are going anywhere for 10-12 years. To flip that conservative bias it would take 20 years of democrats holding the presidency and the senate to be able to confirm... If the Republicans get in even for 4 years those guys will retire and be replaced with a 40 year old. So you're talking decades more rulings by the current crop. American politics is so divided it verges of being a hostage situation for half the country each time one party's on office... When the red and blue halves of the country are so clearly delineable I really wonder if the average person wouldn't be better if they just went their separate ways.
  12. They need a case put to them on which they can rule, which gets escalated through the system up to the supreme Court. But the cases aren't arbitrary, random cases of the day. They are crafted by people who were seeking to take their case to the SC looking to challenge specific aspects of Law. For example this tweet thread shows the process allegedly planned to get gay marriage repealed after and based upon the roe ruling. It's grim.
  13. Great news about Klopp extending. I'm loving this era to bits and don't want it to end. Klopp burnout last year... My theory was that Klopp is a more emotional and passion driven manager than say Pep, and he and his team are fuelled more by the noise and excitement in the stadium than City, among others. City are technicians. So the technicians kept executing their style perfectly in empty stadiums, but Klopps team, among others of similar style, performed below average relative to their potential through the pandemic, because they didn't have the crowd energy there to feed off

I'm really glad I got the nurse to take it. Had all 3 kids via caesarian, and all 3 times I end up waiting in recovery with the baby, waiting for my wife to get closed up. Three of the best moments of my life and finally I have a photo from one of them

  19. It's terrible. He's going off on all these tangents with side projects which distract him from the core mission. If he doesn't have the stones he should just hire a ghost writer to finish the books for him. Whoever he'd have wanted to be engaged post humously.
  20. I struggled with the first 3 episodes but it was ripping along in episodes 6-8 and left me wanting more. The overall world and story arc in the wheel of time book series is absolutely fantastic. The books probably grabbed me more than Thrones tbh, though it has a few lean patches. My main criticism of the show is not enough of the folk lore and world building came through in the early episodes.
  21. As he was in the last season's of the show, and was able to provide the key details around which the last season's were built. I dunno. GRRM is dead to me. Not only for the show but for the profound writers block that's seen me waiting a decade for a book that I now think we won't see until after he's dead
  22. I wish I could be excited about House of the Dragon. But like everyone else I know who watched GOT I'm convinced it will be shit, as the show was once it went beyond grrm's source material. I just watched Wheel of Time season 1 and will be much more excited for season 2 of that, because they're similarly awesome books, we know how the last one ends, and isnt shit. , And
  23. Just watch the Wheel of Time season 1 on Amazon and thought it was bloody awesome. I don't know why there hasn't been more of a fuss about it. Much better story than game of Thrones. https://youtu.be/3Fus4Xb_TLg
