Oman's Sultan Qaboos has passed away at the age of 79, after having ruled the country since 1970. Qaboos was the longest serving leader in the Middle East. He had been suffering from colon cancer for a while. Qaboos played a major role in keeping peace in the Middle East, often acting as a mediator, especially between the West and Iran.

Of all monarchies in the Middle East Oman is the oldest having been established in 1770s and it's genuine means it wasn't installed with the help of British.

Yes, that is true in terms of the dynasty of the monarchy in Oman. However, our British government did help install the Sultan Qaboos, by helping him overthrow his father. But his reign can by all accounts be considered a success, as he modernised the country and he helped improve the standard of living in Oman. His foreign policy was also very fruitful, in that he helped to resolve disputes between neighbouring nations. He was a very strong ally of the West.

They have inherited this way back from the early Islamic history. Oman is home to Ibadi school of thought of Islam. They emerged from the days of the Muslim civil war which ultimately led to the Sunni-Shia split. This group believed that both of them have failed in diffusing this conflict peacefully and their politically weak decisions led to all this bloodshed. They didn't take part in any dispute and to this day Oman has never been part of any conflict in the region.
