I noticed more Asians wear the mask in Vancouver yesterday and it seemed off, but only Asians wore it and I just assumed it was standard even in the area.

That's not London or UK is it xD?

Ironically, it's quite ignorant to say all Asians wear the masks though.

I've been in Asia. I know they don't all do it. But it's common practice there.

I saw a grand total of 2 people wearing the masks in Beijing last year, tbh. And nobody wore them in Harbin or Tianjin. But that's because I got lucky with China's shitty air pollution (which sort of rolls in like the weather) - but most people in Asia wearing those masks are generally doing it because they're living in cities where you have pollution roll in like a storm and it hurts your lungs.

But yeah, they're also wearing masks more now because they're worried about the coronavirus - just like the footage of Beijing where everyone's got a mask on during the SARS scare.

Well I was in Cambodia and saw it lots there. That's my own experience. The rest was generalized from tourist videos I saw of China and Japan.

Too bad they don't realise that those cheap surgical masks do not protect them from the pollution anyway... neither do they protect them from viruses for that matter haha. Pretty much useless.

Tbf the shops in China (and in the hotel lobbies as well) sold were 3M (or copies of 3M masks, because you know... it's China) with a weird vent thing on the front. I didn't buy one or wear one so I don't know what the vent thing does, let me try googling for it.

Found it: https://www.amazon.com/3M-8511-Respirator-Valve-5-Pack/dp/B00FY3EV08/ref=sr_1_25?hvadid=78134093157472&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvqmt=e&keywords=3m+n95+mask&qid=1580168408&sr=8-25

it's a "respirator valve" - no clue what that does though lol *edit* oh it just keeps the mask cool, so it doesn't get too hot breathing into a thing that's right in front of your face.

But yeah, the ones that are basically just a piece of paper or cloth in front of your mouth aren't going to protect you from anything xD *edit* and I doubt these other ones do anything either

Something like this?

If yes then it's dust/particle masks with filters (n95); those are definitely better and do help to a certain degree. I used similar ones a few times on dusty roads on a motorbike or in a tuktuk. But they can get very uncomfortable when it's hot and you sweat; the inside gets all moisty despite the valve. Yuck.

The majority of mask wearers (in my experience) tend to use those though:

Usually a poor fit too. xD

Yeah it's those (the N95/P95s) - those are most of what I saw being sold (not worn, though) in China for people who wanted pollution masks - I edited my post you quoted also because I figured I could google it.  The two people I did see with masks though had shite like the second picture.

I imagine it's pretty disgusting being in Beijing or Shanghai (or anywhere where you get weird weather-like pollution) when the pollution rolls in.

Bangkok can be pretty bad at times but compared to Beijing it probably still feels like a lush forest with sweet smelling air I imagine haha.

Maybe, they’re not releasing the name of the patient or what hospital he’s in. Which just means I need to avoid every hospital in the city

Apparently the first case in Germany (a German man in his 30s) got infected in a company workshop by a Chinese speaker who came from Shanghai to lead a seminar for the company or something; she was completely asymptomatic too.

Not in the UK they don't.

Yeah they do in Birmingham, more than normal today though.

Anyway believe this will be the first case in the U.K. 2 Miles from me

So the symptoms of the corona virus are very similar to the symptoms of a common cold... Now I have to be wary of anyone that sneezes, coughs or has a runny nose.

The symptoms are exactly what I've had in the past few days. I've felt like shit at work.

It's just a cold though, made worse by working in cold and wet weather. I get them all the fucking time these days.

We have a huge population of Chinese people around here due to the Uni, who will have travelled to and from China recently, but I wouldn't say it should be of any concern yet.

There is actually an elderly woman who is from around here and she is currently stuck in China right now where she was visiting her Grandson. It's been on the news as she is stuck out there with only a weeks supply of medication left for a lung infection she has. I actually recognise her face, I'm sure she shops in Booths.
