Thoughts on wages?

Take a look at the stats and tell me footballers don't get paid to much.

Messi gets £70 million a year just from wages that does not include sponsorships! Why can't half of that go to healthworkers?

Don't get me started on tax either, I bet he doesn't pay half as much tax as he should I don't think any footballer does. Why has footballers wages been inflated so much since the good old days when they'd be happy with a 100 quid and a chip butty?

It's a supply and demand equation, but there has been a near exponential growth in reach and distribution throughout the world which has greatly increased the flow of money into the game through tv rights and marketing. And clubs spend what they earn.

It's unfortunate that wages are so high particularly when match ticket prices have increased above inflation in part to pay more wages, which hurts local fans ability to afford the match.

Also, I’m a health worker, so let’s stop the bollocks about giving me money I didn’t earn. People don’t pay £30-£100 a ticket to see me do my job. Sponsors don’t pay me to do my job. Why? Because I’m not in the entertainment business. Where’s the crusade against Hollywood actors earning millions per film? Premier League footballers and their counterparts in other countries are literally in the 0.0001% of their trade. It’s a specialism few can attain.

It depends how you view the world. If you view world in purely a monetarist, liberal way then you believe the 'market' is always right and that it determines wages fairly.

I think anyone with a vague sense of morality realises there is something seriously wrong with the world we live in, even if they try and subdue that feeling. Alas, it's not something we realistically can fix, just hope that there is some justice in another world.

Agreed.

But yes supply and demand and all that but it just shows what we are as a species.

My wage is public knowledge if they know where to look and know how many years I’ve been in my profession.

I get judged by every action of every day, would feel nicer if I was on the money these sports stars were on haha

I’ll have you know I was told by a very reliable source that Messi in fact plays for free.

Cheers, not sure what's happened there

No issues I think the same thing happened with your Met post about facial recognition too. Must be something on the phone.

Anyways, back on topic, football wages will always be skewed because of the way agents go about prostituting the players they represent and because there's so much money in it. If a player is good you know that offers from clubs lower down the league in any country aren't getting looked at solely because the percentage cut from payout outweighs whats good for your cash cow (aka footballer). Add to this mess that clubs are clamoring for more TV money and its not like any of this is a secret so now you've given the agents more to think about when it comes to fleecing players. FIFA/UEFA really just need to step in and create some order in this chaos but they aren't because no one wants to be "that guy", the guy who told everyone we need to start playing on a level playing field, the same guy who has a slogan with the words "Fair Play" in it and then goes and institutes FFP with exceptions because that's what fair is, a bunch of exceptions.

Obviously their wages are outrageously inflated, but at least footballers are the ones who actually create the entertainment.

Im more more bothered about the legions of hangers-on who get outrageously rich by leeching off the sport and doing almost nothing, like agents, marketing executives, and federation officials.

We live in a fundamentally immoral, or at least amoral system. There are many many people in different fields who I'd worry about first before I worry about footballers - they might seem ridiculously rich, but in this system they're relatively harmless small fry.

Say Messi or Ronaldo earn $100 million a year. They'd need to save up for 10 years, without any spending, just to become a billionaire. Then think that most footballers do not even get close to that.

The whole “health workers” argument dead heads bring out when bizarrely comparing the wages between football players and health workers never seems to take into account the upper % that earns the most money in that industry. It may we’ll be Doctor A that performs live saving treatment on a patient but then Nurse B, C, D, E, F etc are then earning a lot less to continue the patients after care. Is that fair?

In this case then, they should dock health workers..

All far more important than footballers. Think we would agree on that, yet nurses among other vital professions get paid a pittance. The world is messed up, we idolise the wrong people.
