FC Copenhagen Propose Champions League Qualifying Changes

The plan, which is understood to have support from regular Champions League qualifying-round participants Ajax and Celtic, would see every club that has qualified for the competition ranked from one to 79 in an “entry list” based on their results in Europe over the 10 previous seasons.

The 22 lowest-ranked teams would enter the first round of qualifying, the next 13 would join in round two, 12 more in round three, 12 in the play-off round, with the top 20 progressing directly to the group stage.

This season’s big winners from the “Copenhagen Access Model” would have been Ajax, Dynamo Kiev, Olympiakos, Porto and PSV Eindhoven, all of whom would have gone straight into the group stage as opposed to the qualifying rounds, from which only Ajax and Olympiakos ended up progressing.

Celtic, on the other hand, would have joined this season’s competition in the third round of qualifying, not the first as actually happened. As it happened, the Scottish champions beat sides from Bosnia and Estonia in the first two rounds only to come unstuck against Romania’s Cluj in round three.

Stupid idea. Big club need to be in the comptition straight away or it will die. It should be just for the Big 4 leagues. There should be another competition for the rest to keep them interested.

Imagine the top 8 from England, Spain, Italy and Germany all competing in the CL. ^_^

You really should stop posting

Imagine City, United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, Everton and Leicester all in the CL, with the top 8 from Spain, Germany and Italy joining them. We'd be in for some classic matches and Arsenal could finish 8th every year and still get into the CL.

No one on this forum would want that. It would ruin every other league in the world. It's a terrible idea.

You solve that problem by having another CL for the other leagues, then other clubs would have a chance to win a European trophy or play in a final.

Champions League Elite: Top 8 from 4 nations.

Champions League Conference: Champions from the other 50 European nations.

Why though? Champions League group stage is pretty dull now. You've only made it worse.

My proposal.

Step 1. Mesh all these dumb lil european nations together. A return to Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia ect.
Step 2. All champions qualify automatically. Then all cup champions. THEN impose the similar system to now, where we have qualification bias tilted towards the leagues of better teams to fill out the last remaining places.
Step 3. Yeah that means you have to cut the stupid league cup no one cares about.

Go back to how it was a la European Cup and just invest more in making the UEFA cup a more lucrative competition. European football is so diluted right now.

But every player would want to play in the top competition. Which means that other leagues just get weaker and the big leagues just get stronger. Which has already happened with the champions League letting 4 teams from the top leagues. If they let 8 and had it only for the top leagues it would be even worse

They could have it as a 32 straight knockout competition to make it more exciting. Also good teams from the top four leagues will be more entertaining to watch than teams from weaker leagues.

'Better' doesn't always equal excitement or entertainment. Pretty sure more people would rather watch Ajax than a thoroughly mediocre Milan or Arsenal.

Personally think some in the game are working towards creating a Nations League type “European Super League” where the same clubs compete in it yearly with a certain amount of conference games, much like the group stage of the Champions League as we know it now, with a series of finals with promotion and relegation between the conferences.

Domestically, the same clubs, who’ve benefited from years and years of Champions League money and in some cases, winning the Champions League, alongside having megalomaniac owners, will win the domestic titles and the rest will be cut adrift, maybe more so than they are ready are being now.

As for the next crop or clubs, the ones not rich or lucky enough to get into this new competition will, essentially, be feeder clubs for the elite, with the elite picking off their players and paying them even more inordinate sims than they do when making these signings already.

These ‘other’ clubs will have the Europa League, it may be rebranded slightly but it will be the same group stage/knockout competition.

Please no... This would be a horrendous idea.

This doesn’t benefit teams like Lyon as they rarely reach the semis anyway...what happens if a side does get there. Does their league position offer a CL spot to the next one down?

Agreed.

How long before an underdog reaches quarter-finals and then they get considered for automatic qualification.
