Sport cancelled in Italy for a month?

News agency ANSA claim the Government is considering a suspension of all sporting events in Italy for a month due to the Coronavirus outbreak, as another 27 people died over the last 24 hours.

This would not just involve the areas most hit by the disease, but every region in the country.

According to ANSA, this is the proposal put forward by the scientific community to the Government on how to stem the spread of the virus.

“Avoid for 30 days any events, including sporting, that involve crowds of people who do not respect the safety distance from each other of at least one metre.

“This is one of the proposals from the scientific commission wanted by Premier Giuseppe Conte, which could be integrated into the March 1 decree and be adopted throughout the whole country.”

It comes after the latest update from the Government on the Coronavirus, which has 2,263 positive cases, an increase of 428 compared to just yesterday.

The deaths have also shot up to 79, an increase of 27 from Monday.

There are also 160 who have recovered from the illness, 11 more than at this time yesterday.

This would inevitably lead to either a complete suspension of the Serie A season, or to play every game behind closed doors for a month.

  • The title was changed to Italian Government Consider Cancelling Sport for a Month

I feel like matches behind closed doors is a better idea than just outright postponing everything for a month. Having said that, they probably know how bad the situation is in Italy better than I do... so my opinion doesn't really matter.

Official: Juventus-Inter this Sunday

Juventus-Inter will be played this Sunday evening with Milan-Genoa in the afternoon, as the Serie A Week 26 fixtures are officially shuffled along to replace the Week 27 games.

The decision had been in the air for several days due to the postponements over the Coronavirus outbreak.

A new Government decree ruled on Wednesday that all games would be played behind closed doors until at least April 3.

The Lega Serie A then had to decide whether to continue with the regular fixture list, which would have Week 27 played on March 7 and 8, or resume from where they left off and move the Week 26 postponed matches to this weekend.

Finally, a decision was formally announced this afternoon, with all the remaining Week 26 games played behind closed doors on Sunday March 8 and Sassuolo-Brescia on Monday March 9.

Week 26

Sunday March 8

Parma-SPAL (11.30 GMT)

Milan-Genoa and Sampdoria-Verona (14.00 GMT)

Udinese-Fiorentina (17.00 GMT)

Juventus-Inter (19.45 GMT)

Monday March 9

Sassuolo-Brescia (17.30 GMT)

Pianese (Serie C) already have a few.

So considering the incubation period, don't they have to test everyone they played against in recent weeks?

I know Juventus tested all their U-23 players after the news came out as they played against Pianese just before their first case was confirmed; so I suppose other teams might have tested their players as well; many were advised to self-quarantine too.
