Could be an element of truth to that - he might just have got other people to bet on it instead. If authorities can find proof of that, then he could be in trouble. Think Sturridge did the same recently with his transfer to Turkey, knowing it was going to happen and getting someone to bet on that outcome...
Smiley Culture 1,338 Posted May 7, 2020 The breach regarding players not telling people things that aren’t public knowledge is a tough one. If he’s told his immediately family, e.g parents, siblings and his partners family, that he had an offer to consider from Atletico Madrid and one of those people has gone and walked into Ladbrokes and put x on him moving to Atleti, is that actually Trippier’s fault? However, if he’s provided funds so that someone can bet on it, that is an issue, though proving that becomes more difficult.
Stan 10,365 Posted December 23, 2020 Banned for 10 weeks; misses 12 games. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55423789 Quote England and Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier has been suspended for 10 weeks and fined £70,000 for breaching the Football Association's betting rules. The 30-year-old denied seven alleged breaches, but four were found proven during a personal hearing. The offences occurred in July 2019, which is when Trippier joined Atletico from Tottenham Hotspur. His ban from all football is effective immediately. He will miss 12 games for La Liga leaders Atletico, including their Champions League last-16 first leg tie at home to Chelsea on 23 February. However, he will be available for the Madrid derby on 7 March.
Pyfish 1,277 Posted January 6 Quote Kieran Trippier told a friend to "lump on" over his 2019 move from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid, according to the Football Association. The exchange was detailed in the written reasons for the FA's decision to give Trippier a 10-week worldwide suspension for breaking betting rules. The England right-back, 30, was also fined £70,000. He was found guilty in December of four betting rule breaches, though his ban has been suspended pending an appeal. Three other charges were dismissed by the independent regulatory commission that heard the case. Full story: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55552481 Definitely encouraging his friend to put the bet on. Bets between between £20 and £300 were placed which considering the odds were fairly good at that point is a decent bit of money. His friend asking the question of whether it was definitely going to happen could be construed as him taking an interest in his mate's career but it was definitely to make a few quid surely? DeadLinesman 3,248 Posted January 6 Someone fucking special aids melt on Twitter called me a bookie defender because I had the audacity to claim most footballers think they’re above the laws of the game and do whatever the fuck they like. Of course they’re going to fine and ban him. If players think they can get away with anything, what stops it leading to match fixing? He literally tells his mate to ‘lump on’. Dickhead. Pyfish 1,277 Posted January 6 It's not too dissimilar to that Sutton goalkeeper the other year where the bookies had odds on the guy eating a pie during the match and then he got fined for actually eating a pie. There's an element of yes, the bookies probably shouldn't have odds on something that can be controlled like a transfer or someone eating a pie but at the same time, there's a responsibility as professional footballers to stay within the rules and not encourage friends or family to 'lump on' on something you know is going to happen. But how can we expect footballers to adhere to betting rules when they can't stop themselves having parties in the middle of a global pandemic?
Burning Gold 512 Posted January 6 You can feel a bit sorry for him if he genuinely thought his mate was just taking an interest, but the rules around sharing inside information are clear. I usually hate comparisons between football and "normal" jobs, but we'll all be familiar with information we receive in our professional capacities which we're not allowed to discuss outside; Trippier is a professional footballer, so it'll be no different. At the very least, alarm bells should've been ringing when his mate asked if he should "lump on". That's a question you just cannot answer and his mate shouldn't be asking it. I think he would've received a much lighter punishment were it not for that particular part of the exchange

Not just that but shortly after he says 'can do' after his mate initially asks the question, Trippier then volunteers the information to 'lump on' as well. In the end, he assisted the first goal, was involved in the move for the second and was generally up and down the flank all night. A top performance from Trippier last night. As for Atletico, if they keep winning games like the one last night against a tough Sevilla side, I don't see how they are going to drop this lead. They are 4 points ahead of second and with 2 games in hand.
