Let's do an objective list and a favourites list. No sports games since they only really vary depending on sports you like rather than games. Only games you've played as well.

I'll go first.

Objective

10. Sonic the Hedgehog

I had to include the first Sonic somewhere. Objectively today it's a bit dated. It inspired the platformer genre to explode more than Mario ever could. I'm talking about the likes of Bubsy of course because every company gave an attempt to throw down with Mario. Only Sonic came close, and I couldn't leave them out.

9. Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled

I haven't played Mario Kart 8 Deluxe but in terms of Kart Racers, I can't see any better option than Crash Nitro Kart with customization to style and speed, a great character select screen and loads of fun to just drift all over the place. It's by far the most skilled based kart racer out there, and dare I say most skilled based racer generally. It's not "objectively" a top 10 game of all time, but of the ones I've played I'd say it's up there.

8. Mortal Kombat

Basically revolutionized fighting games and every style since has tried to go down the Mortal Kombat route. Need I say more?

7. Super Mario Bros 1

Again, don't need to say much. It's obviously one of the most dated games ever, but just the fact it saved video games it's hard to leave it out.

6. Super Smash Bros Brawl

Brawl was supposedly the "bad" Super Smash Brothers, but I'm not looking at this from a competitive standpoint. Just for a bit of fun with your friends, as well as an actual good story mode (which was missing from every other edition), and a huge character select, I don't think its hard to see why I think it's one of the best I've played.

5. Super Mario 64

Basically the reason 3D platformers exist. Still a bit cliched in story but they executed the new style perfectly, and apparently at presentations it made its competition sweat.

4. Super Mario Galaxy

More superior to 64. Obviously it didn't revolutionize games in any new way like 64 did but objectively the game is much better. Better story, better ending, not as cliched and more linear to certain stars which made 64 a huge guess work. It's definitely the best Mario game I've played, 2D or 3D.

3. Grand Theft Auto 5

I've complained about kids calling themselves gamers just by playing GTA 5, but you can't deny how well it's done in sales, and just how much it improved from the previous games. Much bigger map and you can do basically anything in a sandbox/open world game. Lots of customization and closest to a "criminal simulator" as you're gonna get.

2. Final Fantasy 7

I've actually not completed this one, I got quite far but it's easy for me to see why there's such a big fanbase to the point it led to a remake. Great RPG elements (you don't get this type anymore) good combat system, great sound. Only downside is the graphics, which even for PS1 standards were poor I think.

1. Legend of Zelda (OOT)

I'm on board with everyone that says this is the best game ever made. I was blown away by what I had played when I finished it. Great story and a very complex structure. Fun combat, minigames and side quests. There is just endless possibilities of what to do in the game even after you complete it.

Top 10 favourites

10. Greendog

An obscure one. Not even good objectively. I find it fun though, I treat it as my arcade challenge. The games got plenty of flaws but it is a bit of a hidden gem anyhow.

9. Sonic the Hedgehog 2

The best Sonic game. Enough said.

8. Legend of Zelda (OOT)

Everything I said above applies here.

7. Pokemon Black and White

My unpopular opinion. Pokemon Black and White isn't only my favourite, but the best Pokemon game. It's the first one that tried something different and it worked. I loved the reboot with no older Pokemon appearing til after you beat the game, making it feel like a totally new experience. Not only that but the generation itself was underrated. With a few exceptions, the Pokemon in it were great. It also fixed a lot of flaws with the older games.

6. Crash Bandicoot 3

Another unpopular one. Everyone's favourite Crash game, and it would have been my favourite too but they overdid it with the amount of non-platforming stages. For that reason I prefer the other 2.

5. Dragonball Z Raging Blast 2

Dragonball Z games are always fun. My favourite was Raging Blast 2. It was way better than the disappointment that was Raging Blast 1 and I had tons of fun with it when it first came out. My favourite fighting game.

4. Super Mario Galaxy

Already explained why I think this one is great. Moving on.

3. Crash Bandicoot

Dated as hell, but I found the challenge to 100% the game intriguing even with all its flaw. It's a damn hard game, but the simplicity and challenge of the game keeps it relevant for me even if it's objectively much worse than the other 2.

2. Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled

Already explained

1. Crash Bandicoot 2

This game is what Crash 3 should have been. Only 4 non-platforming levels of 25, and that should be the very max. They nailed it here. Sure the game is the easiest of the 3, but its the most fun and the one I always go back to the most.

I'll just do a personal favourites list because I'm in no position to make any sort of objective list...

1. Jade Empire - still can't thank @Dr. Gonzo enough for recommending it to me. A fantastic game that I enjoyed immensely, both for the story/gameplay and the aesthetics.

2. Pharaoh - one of the best empire building games ever. I love most of Sierra's titles, but this is the one that started my love for it in the first place.

3. Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom - another in the Sierra city building series, actually my favourite one, but Pharaoh is just a little bit more special.

4. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - a great RPG, and not only because I'm a Star Wars fan. Such a fun game with a fantastic world building, great story and execution.

5. Tropico - the original one. Absolutely loved it, still play it from time to time. The humour is unbeatable, and it's incredibly fun.

6. Road Rash - oh, the memories... because who wouldn't enjoy a cool game about illegal street racing on motorbikes and the opportunity to hit opponents with clubs and chains.

7. Kerbal Space Program - perfect game to satisfy my inner nerd. Because physics and building rockets is fun, the humourous gameplay is also very enjoyable, and there's so much to learn.

8. Crash Team Racing - the original. So much fun had...

9. Mafia 1&2 - great story and setting, interesting missions, incredible score.

10. The Godfather - not flawless but  very enjoyable and somehow it had an incredible feel to it. Makes my top 10 mostly for very personal reasons though, as it was the game I immersed myself into a lot when I was coping with my grandma passing away.

I like war games, probably because it appeals to the testorone of my brain; detail orientated so it allows me to autisitcally focus on the game while appealing to the driven desire to have power. It is kind of amusing to think about really; and pretty typical of male brain chemistry.

Don't want to get into an objective debate because to do that we'd have had to have played some god awful games during the beginning of the gaming revolution in the 80s but heres my top 10.

  1. Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time - I know this seems cliche but this is the definitive blueprint for so many open platformers that you'd be hard pressed to find anything at the time that was doing what Nintendo was doing
  2. Portal 2 - Great story. Superb character design and great gameplay mechanics. Don't think Valve ever did a bad Portal game tbh. Shame they decided to go with pure VS for HL: Alyx as I'd really have wanted to play that and from what I am hearing its getting all the accolades it rightly deserves.
  3. Dark Souls -  Some people say its unnecessarily tough and some people think its a great balance of being good at using your controller and timing. Either ways this is the one that kicks off a long line of great games that came from it with the latest being Sekiro which I recommend to anyone that likes these kinds of games.
  4. Super Mario World - Don't really need to go into this one as it added so many gaming elements that kept the user engaged and it felt fresh even when you get to the later parts of the game. I don't think there are any Mario world-based games I don't truly enjoy with the exception of that water based one which I only couldn't get behind because controlling the jets seems labored.
  5. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - This game puts extreme value on platforming gameplay coupled with some very difficult boss fights and its easily one of the best in a long series of games with great adaptations to modern gaming. Its always a toss up between this game and a Metroid game for me but I'll give Konami its dues, this game is way more expansive than a Metroid game.
  6. Street Fighter III - Alpha Strike : I remember when I learned that this game had a parry/combo system and how the two could be used to turn losing scenarios into absolute winners. Its also, imo, one of the best fighting games we will ever see in our lifetimes and I have another on the list that is probably very close. Its also the game that sparked everything else around it from Mortal Kombat to Darkstalkers to the myriads of clones that came out because of it. I was tempted to put SF 2 in here just because it turned the tide for how people viewed this game but SF 3 is the best one in the series for me.
  7.  Resident Evil 4: When I played this on the GC years ago I was a bit annoyed that Capcom ditched the classic RE style gameplay for an over-the-shoulder type gameplay but I was definitely wrong. This game ranks very high up in the list of RE games and with good reason.
  8. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - After part 2 I thought Kojima went off his rocker with the character swap midway through the game but then they put out this masterpiece and all was restored in the Gear universe. CQC stands out as the biggest innovation in this game but even the jungle survival and open approach system to getting past enemies evolved massively.
  9. Doom (2016) - What ID Software did with the remake of Doom is something no one could have really fathomed with the way FPSes were going at the time. It was raw and allowed players to get into the thick of things very quickly without having to spend too much time mastering new controls. Doom Eternal isn't bad either but the first Doom is really where the engine and the playing mechanics took a turn for the better.
  10.  Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The first is good but I like the second one better just because a game that offers you pathing and a skill tree opens up so many possibilities for the player to explore their own preferences for combat and game approach.

I don't have any particular order but my top 10 are as follows.

Streets of Rage 2

Loved the game as a kid, lost many hours playing with mates and in my opinion, it's still playable to this very day and I do still play it from time to time. Vibrant graphics, great music and just fun to play. Shiva is still a cunt though.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles

Similar to above, a great game that is still playable to this day and another I play on from time to time, especially when I can burn through the game as Hyper Sonic/Hyper Knuckles/Super Tails and play the whole game as it was originally intended.

Micro Machines 2 and 96

Probably dated a fair bit these days as these are games more on memorising courses (due to its top down nature) than the main racing, but it's multiplayer was the thing of legends. Simplistic yet great at the same time, you had to get your points meter to the top to win while racing. Competing the three laps tied meant sudden death and winner takes all.

This is made even more sweeter when you telegraph your mate immediately going to ram you as soon as the race restarts, so you reverse a little to see them fly off the track and take an easy point.

Speedball 2 - Brutal Deluxe

Rule one. Get more points than your opponent. That's it.

A brutal yet simplistic futuristic sports game with a great mutliplayer, you could do a considerable amount of things to get extra points, such as power ups, stars on the side of the pitch, point multipliers and even making the metal ball hot so that the opposition couldn't touch it.

For me, the best part was getting points for actually injuring your opponent and getting them subbed. I actually won a game by the skin of my teeth by purposefully aiming and injuring a player.

WWF No Mercy

Arguably the best wrestling game at the time that, while still enjoyable in some aspects, is dated badly these days, but in its day it couldn't be touched.

Backstage brawls, falls count anywhere, gimmick matches such as guest referee (where you can easily rig a match as you please), customisable rules (fancy a Royal Rumble where you can only eliminate opponents by KO?), a big roster for its time and a strong create a wrestler made the game amazing. Ridiculously fun to play, even if you aren't a huge fan of wrestling and just wanted to throw the metal stairs at your opponent....... then the opponent's manager........ then the guest referee.

Mario Kart series

I've admittedly shit out of this one as I really enjoy all of them, even if there are some I played more than others (I played the hell out of Mario Kart 64 and 8 but didn't play Double Dash too much). All are great and are one of the greatest mutliplayer series around, regardless of which game is played (even the handheld versions).

It's also worth noting that I slapped @Panflute on a regular basis.

Conker's Bad Fur Day

It has an opera singing shit as a boss.

Super Mario 64

Arguably my favourite game of all time as my mind was blown when the game was first released back in 1997 in the UK and still love the game today. The game pretty much set the blueprint for every other 3D platformers after it, even its sequels and arguably Mario Odyssey being the closest to its predecessor since.

Yakuza 0

I never played any of the Yakuza games before this and in 2015 and 2016, I was in a little bit of a slump in regards to work to the point that I wasn't arsed with gaming at all. Then I started playing this and started to find my love for gaming again. While the game is a slow burner and the graphics aren't mind blowing (it was a PS3 game after all), I had a ridiculous amount of fun with the game all round. Befriending a man called Mr. Libido, cracking someone's head against a wall against a gang of yakuza, a ridiculous amount of mini games and side stories with a lot of charm, some great build up to big story moments and just enjoying the Japanese style (maybe not so much the softcore porn xD) made me lose the best part of near 200 hours into the game. Impressive when it's not even fully open world.

Super Smash Bros series

Like with Mario Kart, I can't really pick one as I enjoyed all of them so much so will shit out again and say the whole series. Easily my favourite fighting games of all time due to its simplicity so that anyone can pick up and play, but has depth for those that want to master it. The stages you can play on, the characters available and the absolutely overwhelming amount of customisation available is staggering, from a straight up fight with no items or gimmicks to a fight with so many explosive items available that would make Michael Bay proud. A love letter to everything Nintendo and other third parties represented, it gives me the opportunity to send that yellow shit flying.

Oh and Little Mac and Sonic ftw.

:D One of my all time favourite games...

In no particular order and just off the top of my head...

1 Road Rash - Many, many hours of play on this one... As above

2 Rome Total War - Played this one to death and still find it one of the best of it's kind out there for playability even now...

3 Medieval 2 - Not quite as good as Rome in my humble opinion but still a great game..

4 Rome 2 - Had to buy a new laptop just for this one as my other one couldn't handle it on high settings and if it's not on high settings might as well stick with the first one, no good without the blood and gore!

5 Links Golf ( PC ) then PGA Tour Golf on the Mega Drive, The missus and me used to pack the kids off to bed and settle down for a decent nights golf trying to beat each others scores.. xD

6 Colin McCrae Rally - Another one the other half and me used to play a lot together, She used to like the F1 games as well...

7. Any Strategy Games ( too many to mention ) but things like Knights & Merchants, Anno, Any city/empire building games like Nudge mentioned are enjoyable

8/9/10 Take your pick from any of the following, Desert Strike, Choplifter, Sensible Soccer, Football Manager, R-Type, Command & Conquer.. Ikari Warriors, Commando, Cannon Fodder, Track & Field ( really going back a bit now.. ) Any Shoot-em really up's just to fill an hour or so trying to get to that next level... Many a broken Joystick was had playing them bloody things.. B|

I absolutely adored Mafia 1. I just could not for the life of me get into 2 though. I tried multiple times and just couldnt do it.  Its literally the last game I preordered and I was so disappointed I hadnt done a single preorder since xD until now... The Last of Us 2.....

The gameplay of Mafia 2 was indeed a bit bland... I was still happy with it though because in games like that I tend to spend a lot of time just driving around listening to a great soundtrack xD It relaxes me! Also the setting was really well done, I thought.

Alright Ill try and do a list in no particular order as well:

1) Zelda - Ocarina and Majoras mask where both fantastic

2) Age of Empires 3 - I played the shit outta this game growing up

3) God of War - ive played the entire franchise but the latest game was an absolute work of art.

4) Red Dead Redemption 2 - almost a perfect game

5) Diablo 2 - wasted way too many hours on this hunk of shit but I loved it. 3 was a massive let down.

6) Hitman 3 Blood money - played all of the hitman games but bloodmoney is still the perfect hitman game and still holds up to this day imo.

7) Overwatch - Still play it and still love most of it.

8) The Last of Us - the perfect game.

9) Uncharted series - all the games where good, but the 4th is really, really good. They seemingly got better every installment imo.

10) Wow - Frozen throne/Catacylsm where amazing times to play that game. Havent played in a long while but those where good times.

The driving in Mafia 1 was so fun, it was so rigid and awkward kind of like driving those cars these days I bet. The soundtracks where something to behold, I dont know if you ever watched Boardwalk Empire but watching that show reminded me alot of that game and era.

I loved Boardwalk Empire! :D Well wasn't much of a fan of the last seasons, but really enjoyed it overall. And I agree about the atmosphere!

Have you played The Godfather? The atmosphere there was really really well done too, felt like taking part in the actual movie.

What I loved about it was how addictive it was... The gameplay was excellent for it's time.. I remember trying to stick it to the rider next to me right from the off hoping to gain an advantage.. xD Quality stuff

I remember these on the PSX version.

The main two I remember was being handcuffed to the back of a cop car and the car drives off with you dragged behind (if arrested) or a car taking you clean out and the driver getting out of his car........ to move your corpse and the bike out of the way to drive off (if wrecked). xD

Diablo 2 has a very special place in the list of games I played. I couldn't understand what the fascination was at first but then I just kept playing it and it grew on me. So many many hours spent here.

I seem to remember that you had to also think very differently when driving them because you're so used to driving cars a particular way but that game turns that on its head too. It is not an easy game by an stretch of the imagination.

I also remember playing F-Zero and thinking what a PITA it was to play when it first came out and the GC version was very good as well. Shame they never did something for the Switch.
