Involved in an accident with a heavy truck while riding his handbike, suffered severe head injuries, has been airlifted to a hospital and is undergoing surgery now :(

This is awful. Hope he pulls through...

He made it through the night, is in a stable but serious condition. Induced coma, apparently, is being intubated, neurological condition very serious. 😢

“Regarding the clinical conditions of the athlete Alex Zanardi, hospitalised from 1800 on June 19 in very serious conditions at the Santa Maria alle Scotte polyclinic following a road accident that occurred in the province of Siena, the Health Directorate of the Aou Senese informs that the patient, subjected to a delicate neurosurgical intervention on the evening of June 19, and subsequently transferred to intensive care, has stable hemodynamic and metabolic parameters.

“He is intubated and supported by artificial ventilation while the neurological picture remains serious.”

Doctors at the hospital treating ex-Formula 1 driver Alex Zanardi have begun the process of bringing him out a medically induced coma.

The 53-year-old Italian, a four-time Paralympic gold medallist, suffered severe head injuries in a crash with a lorry on his hand cycle on 19 June.

A statement from the Aou Senese Hospital in Siena where he is being treated said his neurological condition remained “serious” and that it would take “a few days” to complete “further evaluation”.

Zanardi’s prognosis remains confidential and a further update will be issued next week, the statement said.

Zanardi has become a global sporting icon for the resilience he has shown returning to action after losing his legs in an accident in a race in the US-based Champ Car championship at Germany’s Lausitzring in 2001.

There have been some updates on Zanardi's condition, he's still hospitalised, but has reportedly regained his sight and hearing, and is able to react to external stimuli and communicate using hand gestures. Doctors think he will regain the majority of his brain functions!

Absolutely, I was worried about lack of news, so it's very good to hear he's on the path of recovery.

The human body itself is magic.

Indeed. Makes you think about living healthier too. The human body does so much for us, so why do we have to treat it that badly? :35_thinking:

Sorry but if my body craves KFC every now and then, I must obey.

More good news: reports from Italy state that Zanardi has said his first words since the accident and is now able to communicate verbally thanks to a successful surgery :) That man is truly the epitome of never-give-up attitude!
