Does anybody have the actual proposals on how this is supposed to work???

At the moment everywhere I look it's just about the announcement but nothing else..

20 clubs.

Two divisions of 10.

Teams to be play midweek instead of the Champions League. Teams want to stay in their domestic leagues.

15 clubs - Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus, Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and 3 unknown others - will be permanent clubs. They cannot get relegated or taken out of the league. 5 others are annually 'invited' depending on previous season's achievements.

A closed shop for the elitist rich clubs in the main.

Dear Colleagues,

You will be aware of the announcement published late last night regarding Europe’s leading football Clubs coming together to establish a new mid-week competition, the European Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.

It’s important as a member of our team that I share with you some of the context.

For quite some time now, Clubs, including our own, have held numerous longstanding concerns about not only the future of European football but also the way football is run by UEFA. The global pandemic has also accelerated the instability in the existing European football economic model.

We have therefore joined AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur as Founding Clubs of the Super League. It is anticipated that a further three Clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.

The Super League will be the future of European football and if we want to continue our journey of being a sustainable Club with ambition to grow and continue winning trophies then we should absolutely be part of that process and have a seat at the table rather than outside that group.

The new annual tournament will provide significantly greater economic growth and support for European football via a long-term commitment to uncapped solidarity payments which will grow in line with league revenues. These solidarity payments are expected to be roughly three times what is currently achieved from UEFA competitions. One of the core commitments of the European Super League is to vastly increase financial support for the football pyramid.

After the start of the men’s competition, a corresponding women’s league will also be launched, helping to advance and develop the women’s game.

We know that this announcement has provoked strong feelings within the game and elsewhere but we believe this decision is in the best long-term interests of Liverpool Football Club.

Importantly, this is the beginning of the journey and we can now start an engagement process with you, supporters and key stakeholders to help shape this process in the right way.
There is still much more information to come in due course.

I will keep you updated as we progress on this journey and discuss further on our Town Hall tomorrow.

Thank you for your continued support.

1. Football is serving a great example of the flawed thinking of trickle down economics.

2. Just let it happen now. Fuck them all off, even if they turn around tomorrow and want to come back. Let this serve as the moment football went too far.

From the official statement:

  • 20 participating clubs with 15 Founding Clubs and a qualifying mechanism for a further five teams to qualify annually based on achievements in the prior season.
  • Midweek fixtures with all participating clubs continuing to compete in their respective national leagues, preserving the traditional domestic match calendar which remains at the heart of the club game.
  • An August start with clubs participating in two groups of ten, playing home and away fixtures, with the top three in each group automatically qualifying for the quarter-finals. Teams finishing fourth and fifth will then compete in a two-legged play-off for the remaining quarter-final positions. A two-leg knockout format will be used to reach the final at the end of May, which will be staged as a single fixture at a neutral venue.

Ok it’s 3 clubs with the American owners. But also look who the Vice chairmen of the league are now - a bit hard to deny who was in the drivers seat.

I think City’s owners are from Abu Dhabi. So Saudi puppets in terms of the country’s politics, but not actual Saudis.

It sounds like JP Morgan won't give their financial backing unless the teams still get to play in the Premier League.

We know in English football that the current wealth has a bottom level, typically of about 7th in the league now. Arsenal are an outlier at the minute. English football was already fucked over by Champions League money and fame. Will more money for these clubs make a difference to league positions and title winners over a long period of time? Probably not. Their points might increase but not necessarily their position.

It's hard to say what changes this could have on everyone else. Maybe German football quality declines. Other English clubs are forced to be routinely reminded of their inferior existence and perpetual feeder club status. Romance dies.

@Devil also couldn’t you say the same for the premier league split in the 90s? Where the owners English then?

To be fair the Premier League split of the early 90's isn't really like this. Fair enough it was a new structure which had it's roots based around the sole purpose of generating money but it still included relegation and promotion and the chance for any club within the pyramid to make it to the promised land to earn the mega bucks. Prime examples Swindon & Blackpool, small clubs.

This is a closed shop event for a 15 clubs with only a handful of clubs across Europe having anywhere near enough chance to make the grade and compete against them.

If this does go ahead where does it leave Bayern Munich and Dortmund?

They'd be competing for the Champions league with a declining interest globally.

The Glazers are bloody leaches like the rest of them, looks like Joel Glazer has his finger in the pie as per normal, the money-grabbing bastard.

Manchester United’s billionaire co-chairman Joel Glazer said the new league would open up a new chapter for the biggest football clubs.

“By bringing together the world’s greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season, the super league will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider football pyramid,” he said.

Glazer will become a vice-chairman of the new league.

Those people involved with the foundation of the Superleague can only understand the language money. Therefore, if fans begin to pressure the sponsors of the 12 teams and any potential Superleague sponsors with boycott, I can see them backing down.

Another thing that has just popped into my mind. If they really want to maximize profits, it's only a matter of time before Superleague matches are held in Asia, North America and Middle East, right? Those clubs are going to break their bond with their local communities for good.

Disagree UAE under MBZ is calling all the shots of the region for a while now.

Their comments about 'legacy fans' and serving the fans of the future really portrayed that. A clear signal that they don't care about local fans that perhaps helped make the club(s) what they currently are. And they only care about fans that will pay up the money and most of those fans will be the audiences in those regions you mention. That's their target market. They've seen how many fans tune in around the world and the significant investment and interest from companies in those areas who provide sponsorships and media rights etc and they've tapped in to that now.

This serves those fans much more than any fan that lives much closer to where the club is actually from. And that's the very sad thing about this whole situation :(

There’s 2 countries that dictate what happens in the region imo, and it’s the 2 that suck in the most US money
