Igor Lebedev: 'Let's Turn Football Hooliganism into a Sport'

A Russian politician has proposed legalising football hooliganism and turning it into a sport.

Igor Lebedev has drawn up rules for "draka" - the Russian word for fight - which he said would involve 20 unarmed competitors on each side in an organised brawl.

Groups of Russia fans were deported from France after repeated scenes of violence at Euro 2016.

Russia will host the next World Cup in summer 2018.

Lebedev, who represents the opposition Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, is also on the board of the Russian Football Union.

He published the proposal on his party's website, stating: "Russia would be a pioneer in a new sport. Fans arrive, for example, and start picking fights. And they get the answer - challenge accepted. A meeting in a stadium at a set time.''

Following clashes between his country's fans and England supporters at Euro 2016, Lebedev said he "did not see anything terrible about fans fighting".

If I'm being honest I don't mind hooliganism so long as it's contained and away from the stadium. If pond-life want to beat the shit out of each other then let them as it's only going to improve the gene-pool.

That's all well and good until somebody gets killed and a witch hunt begins on who to blame.

That it can be contained sounds nice in theory, but we do not know the wider social and psychological consequences.

Once you legitimise anger based violence whose to say it won't lead to more violence outside of an organised car park meeting.

Boxing and UFC doesn't have any tribal aspects and the professionals have good discipline and rules usually. It's not like anyone can get into a ring either. But if any old mong can have a fight in a car park that's not the same.

At smaller house shows it does cause a bit of violence from time to time as supporters of fighters tend to start football style chanting at one another.

Personally if consenting adults  want to meet on brownfield sites and smash one another's heads in i'm all for it.
