England Squad - Euro 2020

The signs are that we're going to go there with a 3-4-2-1 ( a 5-2-2-1 depending on how you want to read it), that can switch to a 4-3-3 if needed. A squad of 23 players to be selected:

Goalkeeper: Pickford, Pope, Henderson

Defenders: TAA, James, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Gomez, Dier, Shaw, Saka

Midfielders: Henderson, Rice, Mount, Maddison, Grealish, Foden, Sterling, Sancho

Strikers: Kane, Rashford, Calvert-Lewin

I know there will be some people that would leave Eric Dier out and I don' think Dier is great, not do I think he is as bad as can be made out, but he can play centre back and centre mid and that's a versatility you need in tournament football. Calvert-Lewis is a must for me imo, if you're chasing the game and you need to go for it you can drop Kane deeper and have Calvert-Lewin attack off of the shoulder of the defender, just adds an instinct in front of goal some of our strikers lack.

The team I would most like to see in his 3-4-2-1, taking into account certain players that will be picked by Southgate i.e. a defensive minded centre mid partnership in Henderson and Rice, Walker at the right centre back which I would choose as well. It's hard to leave Grealish out of the starting eleven, Foden, Rashford, Maddison and Mount. But this is the selection headache Southgate has now...personally I wouldn't lead with a back 3 considering the attacking talent we have and I would go 4-2-3-1 to fit Grealish in as he's a game changer, but I think in a 3 man attack where Kane is definitely starting you can't look past Sterling and Sancho even with Sancho's slower start to the season. If Southgate is looking to change things up and offer a more attacking version of that 3-4-2-1 then I'd probably play Mount instead of Rice as that's one of his positions for Chelsea and I see no sense in making Grealish play centrally in a position that will require him further back than he'd like to be.

Luke Shaw has had a brilliant season and I think in a back 4 I'd prefer him to Saka, but when you have 3 centre backs and two defensive minded midfielders you need someone like Saka to shake things up. Goalkeepers are much of a mucness imo, Pickford ain't great but Pope and Henderson have only really shown better form than Pickford in spells, all 3 have limitations at the moment.

3-4-2-1

Pickford

Walker - Stones - Maguire

TAA ----- Henderson - Rice ----- Saka

Sancho - Sterling

Kane

4-2-3-1

Pickford

TAA - Walker - Stones - Shaw

Henderson - Rice

Sancho - Grealish - Sterling

Kane

If we're going on form, would Mount actually get in?

Same goes for Walker...

There's something about Maddison that Southgate isn't keen on. Even when he was in form, he wasn't picked. He had that whole casino thing which was blown way out of proportion, picked up form yet wasn't picked again. I don't think he'll be picked for the Euros squad. People compare him to Grealish but I think they're just 2 totally different players who are effective in each of their respective teams.

Again, form-wise, Justin should be in the squad but I'm not sure who you take out of that squad you've listed - unless Saka is classed as a midfielder (where he is better) and Justin in his place in the defensive choice.

March's squad selection will be telling - that'll pretty much be the Euros squad unless there's injuries preventing a pick then or for summer.

If Southgate doesn't go overly defensive in games that don't require it i.e. Henderson and Rice in a game where we're expected to attack more/win, then he's learnt something in my opinion and it'll profit us. In games against the better sides i.e. Belgium, France, Germany where the attack is pacy and just downright quality, then yeah 2 defensive mids is fine to cover a back 3.

It's good to have 3 quality striker choices though that offer various options. Kane will always be first pick but it's good to have other options - even if Rashford is out on the left sometimes. I think Calvert-Lewin would be deserving of a start if he carries on his form in to the summer.

Pickford gets stick but I don't mind if he or the other 2 start. They're all good enough.

As far as I'm aware Walker may be out of the team due to injury/nonfootballing reasons, obviously Cancelo is in great form, but Walker has also been at the heart of City's defensive resurgence and has had some very big performances, his ability to read danger and sprint at a billion miles per hour means he covers a lot of ground defensively. For me it's a no brainer having him in a back 3.

As far as I'm aware Mount has been one of the few good performers for Chelsea this season, but you don't pick this team just based on form, that's a bit of a romantic ideal that's not based in reality. You need a squad and you need players who can play multiple positions, Mount can play in central midfield. Grealish and Maddison for example I don't think are as good in a deeper midfield position but much better playing as attacking mids both centrally and to the left.

I agree regarding your thoughts on Grealish and Maddison, Maddison is much more central and Grealish loves to attack the byline. They would work well together in the same team, but I do think they will be competing for a similar position as the strength out-wide too good.

I think Justin is a good shout for versatility and tbh you could make a good argument in putting him over James, I think James is better but Justin is so good on the left as well. Saka has to be in though.

Otherwise I agree, I think Southgate needs to be brave now because he's got the players to attack the game when needed. He took over a shambles pre-World Cup and delivered a semi-final by just beating teams we were expected to beat, but some were close like Colombia and the Croatia game we were outclassed. He needs to evolve but I'm not sure that will happen as I've seen little in the qualifiers to suggest the style of play is going to be more expansive.

Mount's easily been our player of the season and virtually our only consistent performer.  Great energy and only Grealish and Fernandes have created more key passes than Mount.

I'd like to see England be more adventurous given their attacking talent but we won't see it.

Pickford

TAA---Stones---Maguire---Shaw

Rice----Mount

Foden------Grealish----Sterling

Kane

Anyone that picks Sterling is dreaming. He only plays well for Man City where he can walk the ball into the net, an absolute travesty for England.

You must have missed the World Cup where he was our best player alongside Kane

Southgate is manager, Mount is the only name guaranteed and any fantasy lineup should include him if we’re being real and tbh.. jokes aside, he’s a managers dream.

As for Dean Henderson, well, miles ahead of Pickford in terms of ability and potential, just a shame he’s so in love with United that sitting on the bench for 120k pw is worth it for that boyhood dream he has.

Southgate has to go for a back 4 imo, we’ve got a group of phenomenally talented midfielders and strikers and we need to prioritise them over an extra centre back.

I don't have a problem with us playing with a back three against the likes of France, Italy and Portugal as I imagine if we attempted to match them we could get outplayed rather quickly. Against other teams though, I'd like to see us take the game to them. I don't think we should be fearing the likes of Spain or Holland with this generation of players.

I think we have to be realistic with our defensive options and I agree, at times we may have to go to a back 3, especially as we don’t actually have many good centre mids compared to Portugal etc, just a lot of attacking midfield talent. But yeah against Croatia and whoever else we have to be brave or I think we’ll get made to pay for it

If I was picking the squad right now it would go as follows.

Gk. Henderson, Pope, Pickford

Df. Trent Alexander Arnold, Trippier, Shaw, Chilwell, Stones, Maguire, Mings

Mf. Henderson, Rice, Foden, Maddison, Grealish, Mount

Att. Sancho, Sterling, Rashford, Kane, Calvert Lewin, Greenwood

Hard one this, think I'd have to go with that squad. Centre backs are really weak to be fair and I couldn't decide between Harvey Barnes and Greenwood but having thought long and hard about it I think Mason is the type of kid that could score a hat full at a tournament and really blow up on the international scene like a Gazza, Rooney and Owen.

Standby players - Keane, Barkley, Harvey Barnes

Danny Ings is a good player but we've got plenty who can play through the middle in my squad.

Can't believe I've put 3 Villa players in and 0 of ours. What has happened to me.

I think ours are going to be collectively unlucky. Maddison has built a better case this season, particularly since December he's been scoring and assisting loads, but I can just see him being the one to miss out. Barnes likewise, he won't go but he's had a good season and probably deserves to be in contention. Justin would've gone if not for his injury too.

Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, Nick Pope

Defenders: Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, Trent Alexander-Arnold, John Stones, Harry Maguire, Eric Dier, Luke Shaw, Bukayo Saka

Midfielders: Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice, Mason Mount, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, James Maddison, Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho

Strikers: Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Danny Ings

These are the 23 players that I would probably take to the Euros in the summer if I was England manager. As the goalkeepers go, I actually think that Henderson and Pope are better all round keepers compared to Pickford. But I can see Pickford probably starting in goal again at a major international tournament, especially with Henderson's lack of playing time this season at Man Utd. But yeah, I'd take these 3 keepers, who have all really impressed in their own ways in recent seasons.

The defence is probably our weakest position. Joe Gomez is unlikely to be fully recovered from his injury when the Euros come round, so I left him out. I included John Stones, because his form has been excellent this season for Man City. Dier offers experience and versatility, while Maguire is obviously going to be a starter in central defence. Trent could really shine in this tournament and I see him as being a key figure in our back line. I'd take Luke Shaw because of the improvement's that he has shown, while the youngster Saka can definitely offer a lot down the left. Walker and Trippier offer a lot of experience and reliability, so I'd take them as well.

Midfield is arguably our strongest position. I had to drop several players that I admire, such as Ward-Prowse, Kalvin Phillips, Harry Winks, Loftus-Cheek as well as Ross Barkley, who's form has dipped a lot this season. But I don't believe that any of these players will be missed much, due to the abundance of talent that England have in midfield. Henderson has to be taken, his experience is invaluable in the heart of the midfield for England, while the likes of Foden, Bellingham and Rice can also do an excellent job in central midfield for the national team. Mount and Maddison are great options for England, if they require more impetus in the attacking midfield position. While Sterling and Sancho are clearly going to be the first choice wingers, where their devastating pace and dribbling abilities are bound to give many of the opposition nightmares. Grealish is not a bad option as a substitute winger either, I had to select him ahead of Hudson-Odoi, who is not always a starter at Chelsea.

In attack, Kane and Rashford are obvious options and they should once again provide a real threat for England up front. The final striker spot was a very difficult choice though, but I have opted for Danny Ings instead of Calvert-Lewin. Both are incredibly talented forwards, but I just felt that Ings provides a little bit more overall. Ings has proven that he can score all types of goals and apart from his injury ravaged time at Liverpool, he has proven that he is an excellent striker who can score consistently for lesser EPL clubs, such as Southampton and Burnley. Abraham I don't think is good enough yet, while Vardy has retired at international level, so I didn't include either. All in all, I think that the squad that I have selected, would be a very strong squad going to the Euros.
