In F1, when you have a massive rule change, it can seriously mix up the competitive order, especially if the last year of the previous rules saw a massive title scrap. Ferrari and McLaren started the 2009 season as about the 7th and 8th best prepared teams after fighting to the death over the 2008 title. The same could happen to Mercedes and Red Bull over the next 12 months. After a year or two, the teams with the most financial grunt tend to get to the front before the teams as a whole end up finding the way to maximise the rules available and you end up with a very close season like we see in 2021. Most likely, if Mercedes and Red Bull fight to the death over the 2021 title, teams like Alpine and Ferrari have a chance to steal a march on everyone next year but by the end of 2022, Mercedes will have the fastest car again for as long as they remain in the sport before they hit the limit of the new rule set and the field start to sneak up on them again. It's just how F1 works. True, eventually the bigger teams start pulling away. Not just in the championship but the talkfootball F1 league. We'll find out if Tommy has learnt from his mistakes made in the previous 2 seasons, and if he really can take the fight to Nudge and MUFC. Be good to see that best of the rest spot be competitive throughout the year and change hands at some race tracks. There's a world of difference between having an established top 3 teams and just a top 2. We saw last year how many podiums got shared out to Ferrari, McLaren, Alpha Tauri, Racing Point and Renault because there were only 4 cars (one of them driven by Albon) they couldn't really beat instead of 6.
