Come on. Red Bull are definitely ahead now but the gap is surely not as huge as in the past few years when Mercedes were regularly 0.5+ second faster over a single lap. Today looks bad in terms of competitiveness, but let's not forget that Lewis had floor damage since Lap 10 and both Mercedes were held behind by Norris (and Perez, before he went mad) for quite a while, allowing Max to build up a huge gap.

I just don't believe that Mercedes have given up and won't bring any more upgrades this season. Let's see what Silverstone brings.

First half of the season in 2017 and 2018. With Ferrari and Mercedes, whoever got pole there was never much in it. The odd qualifying there may have been 2 tenths but in general not much. MErc in qualifying seem to be quite a bit behind, the opening race in Bahrain. Lewis won but wasn't it over half a second in qualifying?

This had me looking into the quali times of the last three seasons. For the sake of convenience, the gap is between the fastest Mercedes or Red Bull driver to the next fastest driver (other than their teammate) in each session.

BAHRAIN:

2021 - Max -0.388 ahead of Lewis

2020 - Lewis -0.414 ahead of Max

2019 - Lewis -0.562 ahead of Max (Leclerc on pole, 0.324 faster than Lewis)

ITALY (Imola):

2021 - Lewis -0.035 ahead of Perez

2020 - Bottas -0.567 ahead of Max

2019 - no race

PORTUGAL:

2021 - Bottas -0.398 ahead of Max

2020 - Lewis -0.252 ahead of Max

2019 - no race

SPAIN:

2021 - Lewis -0.036 ahead of Max

2020 - Lewis -0.608 ahead of Max

2019 - Bottas -0.866 ahead of Vettel

MONACO:

2021 - Max -0.025 ahead of Bottas (Leclerc on pole, 0.230 faster than Max)

2020 - no race

2019 - Lewis -0.475 ahead of Max

AZERBAIJAN:

2021 - Lewis -0.113 ahead of Max (Leclerc on pole, 0.232 faster than Lewis)

2020 - no race

2019 - Bottas - 0.302 ahead of Vettel

FRANCE:

2021 - Max -0.258 ahead of Lewis

2020 - no race

2019 - Lewis -0.646 ahead of Leclerc

AUSTRIA 1:

2021 - Max -0.194 ahead of Bottas

2020 - Lewis -1.215 ahead of Max

2019 - no race

AUSTRIA 2:

2021 - Max -0.294 ahead of Norris

2020 - Bottas -0.538 ahead of Max

2019 - Lewis -0.177 ahead of Max (Leclerc on pole, 0.259 faster than Lewis)

So on tracks where Max was the fastest driver in quali this season, his average gap to the closest opponent was -0.2268s. Compared to last season (also only taking the same tracks into account), on tracks where one of the Mercedes driver was the fastest in quali, their gap was -0.599s. In 2019, it was 0.57225s.

I will look into 2018 and 2017 later, as it's a bit of a nuisance to do it on the phone, but at least in 2020 and 2019, Mercedes gap to a closest opponent over a single lap was more than twice as large as Max's gap this season so far.

Am thinking, at some stage over the last 3/4 races. Could RB have threw a few upgrades in?

2020 Q3 Austria. 2021 Q3 Austria

VB 1:02.939. 1:04.049

LH 1:02.951. 1:04.014

MV 1:03.477. 1:03.720

Merc lost > 1 second

RBR lost 0.243 seconds

This a serious drop in performance from Merc.

Those floor regulation changes this season + low rake really hurt Mercedes.

Mercedes confirmed that they will be bringing upgrades to Silverstone.

Toto Wolff: "We're going to go to Silverstone, blow everybody away, finish 1-2, 30 seconds ahead of everyone else."

Please be joking. :52_fearful:xD

Low rake has hampered Merc and Aston Martin. Wonder if they'll upgrade all season or just the next race. It's Kewis home race so he won't want to get humilated.

It has apparently been in the works for a long time, so I reckon it's intended to be used for the rest of the season...

He's also an endless source of entertainment :4_joy:

Wolff and Horner are my two top favourite team principals, both for very different reasons though xD

He realises he still employs Bottas as the number 2 driver, right?
