Germany to vote on same-sex marriage after Merkel drops opposition

Bill to grant marital rights to gay couples hastily put on agenda after chancellor signalled shift in her position on issue

Germany’s parliament is due to vote on a bill to legalise same-sex marriage on Friday after the lower house legislative committee put it on the agenda, its chairwoman said.

“The path to equality is open,” said Renate Kuenast, of the left-leaning ecologist Greens opposition party, in a tweet on Wednesday.

The bill is widely expected to pass as it is backed by most parties and the chancellor, Angela Merkel, has told lawmakers of her centre-right party that they can vote according to their conscience.

The reform would grant full marital rights – including the possibility to jointly adopt children – to gay and lesbian couples, who in Germany are only able to enter civil unions.

The bill was hastily put on the parliamentary agenda on the last day before the summer break by the centre-left Social Democrats, Greens and far-left Linke party.

They acted after Merkel dropped her opposition to the reform, sparking widespread calls for a speedy vote.

Merkel had long voiced personal reservations about gay marriage with adoption rights, citing concern about “the wellbeing of the children”.

Last Sunday, her junior coalition partners and election rivals, the Social Democrats, upped the ante by declaring they would insist on same-sex marriage in any future alliance.

All other political parties hold the same view, leaving Merkel’s party opposed, along with the hard-right Alternative for Germany.

Merkel signalled a shift in her position on Monday in an on-stage interview with the editor of women’s magazine Brigitte.

She said her thinking had changed after a “memorable experience” when she recently met a lesbian couple who lovingly care for eight foster children in her Baltic coast constituency.

Her own party voted against it. Quite a bold move from her, but then again not really. She's just making sure she'll get ALL the votes in September. The final nail in the coffin of Martin Schulz and his hopes to become the next chancellor.

I don't believe in any of the religious mumbojumbo about the spirituality/sanctity of marriage. Marriage is a contract, like a business contract, with someone you intend on cohabitating with and forming a family with. Yes, you should marry someone you're in love with... but it should be looked at more like a contract than anything. You gain benefits theoretically from engaging in a "marriage contract" - but you make a breach of that contract (divorce) more complicated and costly (generally speaking) than ending a relationship. Looking at that, I think it's silly to prohibit anybody from being able to marry someone from the same sex. So it's good Germany is going to vote to remove an arcane prohibition on gay marriage (assuming they vote to allow it).

I understand both sides of the argument but from a legal standpoint you probably have to offer the option up to gay couples as well.

Marriage is something that was invented for religious purposes with the understanding that sex before marriage is wrong and a wedding basically serving as a "we finally get to fuck" party BUT it doesn't even mean that anymore when concerning straight couples getting married so I'm not sure you can use it as an argument against gay people wanting to get married. It's now basically just done for the purpose of tradition. It's also gone from just being something that exists within religion to actually having legal benefits attached to it which, in my opinion, means you can't discriminate when it comes to marriage.

Those are the arguments to use against opposition to it. When people start talking about "it's love and love should conquer all" it makes everything difficult to take seriously as it's not a real argument for it and it's fucking cringeworthy.

Lol some of you have views like this man.

While others buy into the sanitized Modern Family representation of homosexuality and think that apart from their bubbly "tee hee" quirks they're just like us in pursuing monogamous relationships with the right person.

I can't tell which one is more deluded!

You don't have to attack them for having a different opinion.

That's not offensive unless you're incredibly thin skinned. And if you are that thin skinned, I couldn't give a fuck if you're offended tbh.

First, accidentally downvoted you then upvoted you, so you're going to get bipolar notifications.

I've never actually watched Modern Family. But I don't think gay people are too different from us, just based on the fact that I don't choose which girls make my penis hard it seems my brain has determined that. I also know gay people who don't act feminine and typically poofy, although some definitely do (and I've heard gay people complain about those gays).

It might be that human beings are very complicated. But denying people the same opportunity to enter into a marital relationship (which is not sacred or special - it's essentially a business contract) because they're gay and the way they have sex is gross, doesn't seem right.

I don't see marriage as just a business contract, but as said the institution of marriage has been hollowed out already so it's virtually meaningless apart from administrative benefits. Gay marriage is a useless discussion as ultimately it is like fighting over who sleeps where in a building that's already been demolished.

I will say that the homosexual lifestyle has some deeply undesirable and unhealthy elements that get swept under the rug in favour of the "love = love" narrative. That the so-called LGBT movement gets promoted aggressively throughout every layer of society as if it is the paragon of human achievement proves how downright suicidal the West has become.

I don't get why trannies get lumped in with gays and lesbians tbh. It's one thing to be gay, it's another thing to mutilate your penis and then demand that I act like it's fucking normal. That's not really got anything to do with gay marriage, just a thought I had about this LGBT thing.

That's been pointed out a lot, and eventually it'll will be something they regret. It's not that difficult to get the general public used to two men holding hands, but people will have a more visceral, natural reaction when confronted with a grotesquely dressed and deranged 6'4 trannie who insists he is a delicate feminine flower.

Think you have to say LGBTQIA or LGBT+ now... That's queer, intersex and asexual people being included now. It's like they're just adding random groups and pretending the struggles are the same. And why is the L there if the G is already there?

Marriage is beyond the claim of any particular religion, so letting religion dictate the terms is invalid. The argument that marriage is for producing also makes no sense since we allow infertile people to get married, and currently many people get married with no desire to have children. If people want to get married and live without children that's perfectly valid.

Plus there's plenty of kids needing adopted anyway, we might as well let committed gay couples get the recognition they want since they're a pretty useful source of adoptive parents.

When you see the emotional reaction and the tears of relief from people who are now allowed to get married it shows up the anti-gay marriage folk as complete bastards

Then I'm a bastard, they can get fucked, which they probably will in their bath houses by random strangers lmao
