Surprised by this. Come out of the blue considering how he turned down approaches while he was there.

Probably just fed up of the continuing circus and not knowing what's happening.

Yeah, a bit surprised considering what he'd said and done earlier after the pretty rough season they endured.

But I don't think anyone can fault him for wanting out considering there's really been no clarity whatsoever about what the future holds for Derby despite something like 3 or 4 prospective buyers (and their bids falling apart for various reasons).

They've ended up with 5 players. He's pissing in the wind staying any longer. Rooney could have walked away far sooner.

Good luck to him think he'll do OK elsewhere

I get the impression it's a good time for a new era. It sounds like this local businessman whose bought the ground has the best intentions and it will be a fresh start for a club that has a very good academy to fall back on.

Wayne Rooney should get another Championship club comfortably but I hope he takes the right job. Going to someone like Birmingham City now, or Watford if they're underperforming would be like jumping out of a frying pan in to a fire.

I get it but also I don't get it.

He's had to experience more problems in his first dip into management than anyone and he's stayed through it all and come out of it with good credit.

But I can't help but feel the tide looks to have changed there with this takeover probably going through this week and they will get some welcome investment. It's probably as good a time to manage Derby as it has been and he's walked away from it.

Maybe there is more to it we don't know but on the face of it, it feels like he's given up the chance to have a real bash at League One where in all honesty, managing a season at that level would have provided a great experience for him. Sold out away grounds, probably a good backing at home, chance to bring in a few players and actually start building for the future. It's likely they would have a decent season. Winning quite a few games would have been quite exciting for him.

It may not work out so great for him somewhere else now. Time will tell if he's made the right call.

I agree, but he's probably thinking it might be better for him to go to another League One or Championship side that has less question marks over it's future. He's already done a good enough job in bad enough circumstances to where I think he comes out of this miserable time with Derby looking quite good.

Just because they're maybe a bit too good for League One based off getting relegated in a season where they had a points deduction, they're not really out of the water just yet and... haven't they lost a few players recently? I think there's still the very real possibility of Derby getting another points deduction this season because they're still unable to pay creditors.

It's really shit for Derby's fans... but looking at it from Rooney's perspective and his career, if you're a fairly high profile ex-player who's come out of a bad situation looking pretty good and more competent than some of the peers you have in the field and you're working for an employer that can't offer you stability... it's completely normal and understandable you'd look for a job that gives you stability and better resources to thrive at your best.

And he's early enough in his career where he doesn't have to worry about being pegged as a specialist in taking clubs through rough times - and I'm sure he doesn't want that reputation. He's going to want to show he can get the job done at a club with more stability so he can manage at a higher level. I think leaving now, gives him the chance to move to the best possible club he can land at today - I think his stock is probably the highest a manager who's just been relegated from the championship can possibly be.

It sounds like his agent paid the wages in May on behalf of Chris Kirchner under the premise that Chris Kirchner takes over the club which explains the timing of this resignation.

Seems like a strange move for his career really. He got enough plaudits for his work at Derby that he would have been able get a solid Championship job when the opportunity arose.

Then again, Vieira did some time as a coach in the MLS and it hasn't done him any harm based on his first year with Palace.
