This really came out of nowhere and with Alonso's history of poor career choices this comes across as if it might not have been entirely thought through on his part.

Stroll Sr wants an experienced and big name driver for his team so there's probably a handy pay rise on the table for Alonso but I don't know if that's his biggest motivation.

To be fair, if he only cares about winning races and titles, the chances of that happening at either Alpine or Aston Martin are pretty similar and rely on about a 1/1000 chance of them pulling a crazy innovation out of thin air to go to the front of the pack.

it was Aston Martin or nothing.   that said a 24hr endurance season and Dakar with Toyota Gazoo may be better

to his defense this is not really a career decision as at 41 to be 42 he is lucky to still be in formula one, obviously on talent as he hasn't aged as badly as other stalwarts had.

It doesn't seem that way from all that we can see. Alpine seemed genuinely caught off-guard by Alonso's decision, perhaps even showing a bit of naivety on their part.

Reportedly Aston Martin just offered him more money and a multi-year contract. And with Alpine and Aston Martin being relatively close, it doesn't really change his sportive possibilities all that much anyway.
