Too many people online at once? Bandwidth usage? I assume the annual fee that the site has to pay to be hosted on a server only provides a fixed amount of "bits" to be transferred over a given period? Every plugin, feature, person, bit uses up resources. One of our plugins that was actually weren't even using anymore was overloading the database more than it needed to.
