  1. 1. Will you be watching?

Yes, but not happy with various aspects. The fact it's been moved to winter was decided after it was announced it would not.

And more broadly, I don't easily go along with deciding we must treat a nation like the bad guys, but sounds like plenty in Qatar is a long way behind the times.

So not loving that it is where it is or when it is. And follows on from 2018 in Russia, which was after their 1st skirmish with Ukraine. A fun part can often be enjoying the host nations story. Feels like we've been deprived of that aspect for a while now.

But generally the World Cup is perhaps best known for some of its culture clashes.. 1986 England vs Argentina so soon after the 1982 Falklands war. And many other similar instances. Political & cultural differences are not especially a new phenomenon.

South Africa and Brazil were just as bad. Obviously having it in Brazil has that romantisism, given how it's the true home of football, but it wasn't the right time. It's not what their people needed in that moment.

I also remember in South Africa when the documentary was aired on tele and it was showing how people were moved from their homes to areas "out of the way", so they could build new stadiums, stadiums which I'm guessing aren't even being used now.

Is this the last world cup that grotty homophobic dinosaur Blatter played his part in? Is this his final send off from whatever chalet he's hiding in nowadays?

The players and media out there need to make this world cup about various rights. Not to the BBC viewer but to the Qatari.

Yep, bang on.

Thats very much Brazil as well. They built a stadium up near the amazon ffs. I remember seeing pictures of the dilapidated abandon stadium years ago. It all reeks of corruption to the core.

Undecided so far

After a lot of deliberation, I think I'm going to reluctantly have to watch it. Or at least some of the matches.

Iran v. England is a match I've wanted to see my whole life. I don't think Qatar should be hosting it, but who knows if I ever get a chance to see the country I was born in play the country half of all my ancestors is from.

Nah I've been so bad about keeping on top of the other prediction leagues. Plus there's a good chance I'll only be watching for as long as England and Iran are in, which I don't think will be very long.

I'm not going to preach the moral high ground or try to persuade anybody. The whole tournament makes me feel uncomfortable so I'm just avoiding it.

This is the way! I was considering to watch at least Japan, because you don't get a Fortuna Düsseldorf player at a World Cup that often. But this time I can't be arsed and it wouldn't feel right to me. I have also zero feelings ot anticipation, and I usually love World Cups, and all the great fixtures with teams from different parts of the world facing each other etc.

I also think it's a bit shit that because of the UEFA Nations League (or whatever the fuck they call it), you don't really see European sides take on sides from other countries anymore... because there's less time for friendlies now that UEFA's decided to make a glorified friendly tournament. So the World Cup sort of becomes the way you have to see European sides play non-European sides (most of the time).

I probably wouldn't watch it if there were better odds of me ever seeing Iran play England again tbh. But it's the first time that's ever happened in my life, and with less friendlies between European & non-European countries being possible... I doubt it happens again any time soon.

One thing that kind of irks me though is while I think it's reasonable for people to have issues with Qatar hosting it...

... shouldn't there have been similar issues with letting Russia host the last one? I guess Russia wasn't big on pushing anti-gay stuff as much as it is now back then (although... tbh, I have no idea) - but they've also got issues with LGBT+ rights. In 2017 they'd decriminalised wife beating - so they also have issues with women's rights. Russia's one of the countries that imports North Korean slave workers... so they've also got slavery issues.

And 4 years before they'd hosted it... they'd invaded Crimea and annexed it from Ukraine! And in a footballing sense, it's not exactly a secret that they've had issues with hooliganism - which was well on display during that world cup.

I do think there's a difference in: Russia has a footballing culture... Qatar doesn't really & had to build all new infrastructure from scratch. And Russia's world cup didn't fuck with the footballing season. But honestly, there's enough issues with Russia having been the host that there should have probably been more outcry about them hosting it as well. It's something that probably should have been talked about years ago, but was sort of swept under the rug.

In short yes. There absolutely should have been more of an outcry with Russia, Brazil and South Africa hosting the tournament.

It's a personal preference for me that I accept is flawed. I'm sitting here typing this wearing Adidas clothing for example. The same Adidas who had strong ties to the Nazi party. Thats partly why I don't want to preach or talk anybody around to my way of thinking and at the same time I'm not too bothered about how others have rationalised something to themselves. I'm not as outraged by some acts in Qatar as others for example so take any form of moral high ground is just pointless.

I was thinking the other day that I haven't watched any Champions League football since this Super League debacle was announced. I'm not on 'strike' from watching it but I guess subconsciously have just thought 'fuck you guys' to all those teams involved and have no interest in it anymore. I guess the more I've become aware of the politics involved in football with age the less interested I've become in it at an elite level. Maybe the 32 year old me would have had more of an issue with South Africa than a 19 year old me was.

For me, this World Cup in Qatar and all the issues associated with it are a continuation of the sad state of modern football rather than a single one-off issue. My interest in football has dwindled dramatically in recent years as a result of ever increasing commercialisation, corruption, sportswashing, greed and hypocrisy, so the decision not to watch it was really easy and a no brainer for me, considering that I already had little to none interest in several previous World Cups and Euro Cups, haven't bought a single piece of merchandise, and haven't watched a single match in the Champions League, Europa League, or any of the top leagues outside Bundesliga for probably a decade.

Yes, I think most, in England at least, associate Adidas, Puma & whatever others, with the famous story of front line troops of both sides having a Christmas day football match. Fairly sure that's how they became so popular.

The reality many have likely been oblivious to, is the Adi part of Adidas is Adi, as in short for Adolf. With Adolf Dassler the brother who created that brand. While older brother Rudolph Dassler created Puma. And both were members of the Nazi party.

I refuse to believe that if the brands were called Adolph & Rudolph that their perceived status would not be switched around somewhat.

That's a different case altogether xD

But without pointing fingers at anyone, I have a very good example of one of the posters on here visiting me a while ago, going to an Adidas outlet store with me and not believing it's genuine, until they get back home, go to an Adidas store there and read the tags, clearly showing the origin of the item. Just more than 10 times more expensive xD
