Quiz 10 Answers

1) Which country hosted the 2016 European Championships?

A – France. The French bid beat off competition from Turkey and Italy to secure the hosting rights for Euro 2016. 100% answered correctly.

2) Which player scored the most goals at Euro 2016?

A – Antoine Griezmann. Griezmann was comfortably the top goalscorer at the European Championships with 6 goals. Giroud, Payet, Nani, Cristiano Ronaldo, Bale and Morata were all joint second with 3 goals each. 80% answered correctly.

3) Eventual champions Portugal drew all three of their group matches, against Austria, Hungary and which other team?

C – Iceland. Portugal’s Euro 2016 campaign would have been deemed a shocking failure had the previous format where only the top two teams from each group went through to the knockout stages, as their 3 points left them behind Hungary and Iceland in the group. Instead, though, Ronaldo and co. became champions of Europe. 73% answered correctly.

4) Portugal won the final after beating France 1-0 in extra time – who scored the winning goal?

B – Éder. The substitute scored the only goal of the final in the Stade de France with a 20 yard effort in extra time. 80% answered correctly.

5) England were infamously defeated 2-1 by Iceland in the first knockout round, eliminating them from the tournament. Who was on target for England?

D – Wayne Rooney. The England captain appeared to set the Three Lions on their way with a penalty after four minutes. However, unfancied Iceland equalised 2 minutes later and were ahead within 15 minutes. Roy Hodgson’s men had no response in what was his last game in charge of the team. 60% answered correctly.

6) Who were the only side to get knocked out of the Group Stage without scoring a single point?

D – Ukraine. Not only did Ukraine fail to score a point, they didn’t even score a single goal at Euro 2016, losing 2-0 to Germany, 2-0 to Northern Ireland and 1-0 to Poland before packing their bags. 60% answered correctly.

7) France beat Romania 2-1 in the opening match of the tournament – which player scored the winning goal in the 89th minute?

C – Dimitri Payet. Payet scored from outside the area to give the hosts a perfect start to their Euro 2016 campaign, after Giroud’s opening goal of the tournament was cancelled out by Stancu’s penalty. 80% answered correctly.

8) Euro 2016 saw Spain fail to successfully defend their 2012 title as they were beaten in the first knockout round. Who knocked them out?

C – Italy. Having won Euro 2008 and Euro 2012, Spain’s unbeaten run was finally ended when goals from Chiellini and Pellé consigned them to a 2-0 defeat in the last 16. 87% answered correctly.

9) Wales were the surprise package of the tournament, reaching the semi-finals before losing to Portugal. When was the last time Wales took part in a major tournament (World Cup or European Championship)?

A – World Cup 1958. Wales beat Israel in a qualification play-off to book their place at the World Cup in Sweden, the only World Cup where England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were all in attendance. Wales made it through the Group Stage, drawing all three of their matches, but were beaten 1-0 by Brazil in the quarter-finals thanks to a goal from Pelé. 53% answered correctly.

10) Germany’s 6-5 penalty shootout success over Italy in the quarter-finals was one of the most dramatic matches of the tournament. Who eventually missed the decisive penalty for the Italians?

B – Matteo Darmian. It took nine penalties from each team to separate the two sides. After Thomas Muller, Simone Zaza, Mesut Ozil, Graziano Pellé, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Leonardo Bonucci all missed in the first five rounds of penalties, before the quality improved during sudden death until Jonas Hector’s goal and Matteo Darmian’s miss ultimately separated the sides. 33% answered correctly.

A high-scoring round sees @Large, @Stan and @Storts all score perfect tens. Well done folks, as if I'd have taken this one, no way I'd have been getting 100%.
