Karim Benzema is seriously considering a €100m a year deal to join Saudi Arabia club Al Hilal, according to The Independent.

The 35-year-old's contract expires at the end of next month but Real Madrid are hoping to convince the forward to stay another year.

The report adds that Al Hilal are also trying to sign Lionel Messi this summer, while Real are hoping Benzema stays so the club can go big on a striker in 2024.

Is Saudi Arabia the new MLS?

They're going to offer more money than the MLS could ever have dreamed of offering to any single player, so it's probably going to go beyond the MLS in terms of being the premier "before I retire, I better make some more fucking cash" league.

Which they've probably got to do in order to get around the fact that nobody in their right mind wants to live in Saudi Arabia without getting an obscene amount of money.

  • The title was changed to Karim Benzema Signs €200m Per Year Saudi Deal

Entertainment is what makes people complicit with the status quo. The money in media is a bargain for maintaining hegemony. As long as Marvel keeps churning out cinema and famous athlete scores goals, people will forget their problems instead of instigating change.

Oh look, it's time for the annual fOOtbAllErS gEt pAiD tOO mUcH shouts. Football's the greatest show on Earth and it's represented in the money made/spent inside it.

Stop being such wet wipes and accept it.

The real winner in all of this is KSA, now they've pried a footballer in his prime years to come play for them and they've laid the foundation for future players to go there too. If Messi is smart, he'll do the same thing and then then retire to play football at the place of his choice. If Karim went for this kind of money image what they'd be willing to pay to get Messi to go over.

That's true but also so is this.

They're not unrelated ideas at all.

Messi will end up there.

It will become the retirement league for superstars to be fair and I don't think the Saudis will be that bothered as I think they are just happy to get them in their league.
