Read that Arsenal fans have contacted the BBC saying they felt 'threatened' and 'uncomfortable for the first time at Football in 40 years'. I don't necessarily disagree, because it was utterly vile around me when Köln went one-up. Arsenal 'fans' were the threatening, violent, abuse and intimidating ones as a few Köln fans, including a clearly very old German couple, dared clap their sides goal. Archie Rhind-Tutt on Twitter (freelance works for BT & BBC sometimes, specialises for Bundesliga) has a good thread on Twitter and puts a lot of what the media report in to some perspective and context. It really wasn't as bad as people made out (he goes on to explain why Koln fans turned up in their thousands (not as many as 20k, mind) and why the game was such a big deal. Not that that excuses some behaviour of some fans, but the whole of the Koln fans that did turn up can not be blamed for the actions of a relative few overly boisterous or ultra fans. You won't hear in the news about Arsenal's own fans feeling totally comfortable and mingling with Koln fans sitting next to them, praising how their support was and the loud atmosphere they created. Yeah, read that this morning. He's right, all the stuff about people mingling and interacting well won't make headlines or sell rags like The Sun. The vast majority of Köln fans were a credit to their club and country. UEFA even declared it a high risk game after loads bought them. There were fans dotted all over in Wolfsburg as well and no problems there either. Just a lazy failure to separate individuals unruly behaviour from collectively endorsed behaviour. Especially in football, everyone loves stereotyping. One person doing something bad in a clubs colours can automatically lead to the assumption that you've got to watch out for the rest of them. I'd go as far as saying, the alleged Nazi salutes are made up. It's one person suggesting this, which others have jumped on, all with no evidence and pictures aligned to articles suggesting such shows fans supporting their team, fists clenched and arms raised, none in a Nazi styled salute. I'd go as far as saying the only people spreading hate are the journalists who're running this story with no evidence of any such behaviour. People do things to get noticed, to make a mark and to try to accomplish some sort of shock value. The important thing is the safety of everyone and that was achieved in my view considering the fact the police seemed to be a step behind the whole situation and over-oared at some points. There's a big difference between raising your arms whilst chanting and salutes of any nature and I honestly reckon that press and football fans here in the UK are quick to throw allegations around whenever there is some form of story about football fans. I'm one of the very few people you'll meet that in everyday life makes a fuss about things and even something such as this passes me by because I doubt that when people make such gestures that they actually understand what the whole meaning is. What I'm saying is that they're attempting to shock others with their ignorance. I hate politicising absolutely everything. As for what I saw and possibly misinterpreting it, no mate. I know a Nazi salute done to signify exactly that and not holding up an arm in a chant mode. I also want to state that it was a massive minority doing it... The ones that were, looked like the types that would so it. I also witnessed innocent Köln fans (lots) that were extremely uncomfortable with those around them.
