Silva is a 41 year old manager who has already won silverware in Portugal and Greece. He has his pros and cons as a manager which is unsurprising because if he didn't he'd be working for a much better club than Everton.

The defending and set piece issues are significant and may prove to be his downfall if he can't do something about it but his admittedly minor success in other countries and signs of promise in each of his three short spells at English clubs mean that you can't write him off as "shit" or a "fraud" either.

Everton is a very complicated job which NOBODY can sort out in the space of two transfer windows. A club with a pretty average mish mash team playing the polar opposite style of what they did last season and trying to create a semblance of a philosophy after having a playing squad assembled by at least 6 different people over the last few years, and this is before you introduce a disillusioned fanbase who in one breath admit that a new regime takes time to bed in, and accept that we might finish 9th this season, then, when we get 3 wins in a row in November, suddenly fuck all of that realism off and expect a top six finish and the FA Cup by the end of the season. Dont forget how much of a mess we are, perfectly illustrated by the fact that we're paying £800k a week in wages to players that haven't appeared for the club since Silva took over, and that's not an exaggerated figure, look it up.

It might turn out he's not cut out for the Premier League but don't judge a guy six months into taking on arguably the most difficult job in the league when you consider the mess of a playing squad, the financial limitations, the long term incompetence from upstairs and unrealistic expectations of the fans.

Don't expect anything less though from this generation of football fans who watch a team once every three months and consider themselves experts because they listen to Jeff and the lads give a brief analysis on Soccer Saturday that feeds into the "flavour of the month" narrative in favour of this club or against that manager, and believe the baseless clickbait articles from the Daily Star and The Sun on Twitter about which managers are on the verge of the sack and who's being lined up to replace them.

Might turn out shit, might turn out decent, but judge him when he's actually had time to manage the club, rather than his ability to coax a vaguely tolerable season out of a spineless squad of shithouses who have already managed to get three managers sacked in the last three years.

Good post. Problem with Silva is I feel like I'm making excuses for him and that's never a good sign but I've just got this feeling he's going to come good one day. Granted he won't if he never sorts out the defending.

He's made some bad decisions in his career IMO. I get the whole Watford to Everton step up but does it represent enough of a footballing step up to make it worthwhile given how risky a job it is?

I think the same of us too. For example Eddie Howe - imagine if he came to Leicester, you would have to say it's a step up from Bournemouth but he's got a lot to lose there, and also by coming here.

Not like it was a small-time trophy for Sevilla, either. They're not the biggest club in Europe and still had to beat some decent teams to get to the finals (once it gets to the knockouts, anyway. Group stages are shite).

13/14 - beat Porto, Valencia, Real Betis, Benfica. In this season teams like Juve, Spurs & Napoli failed to get to the final.
14/15 - Gladbach, Villarreal, Zenit, Fiorentina. In this season, teams like Ajax, Inter, Roma failed to reach the final.
15/16 - Bilbao, Shakhtar, Liverpool. In this season, teams like Utd, Dortmund, Lazio, Tottenham, Leverkusen failed to reach the final.

What Emery did for that Sevilla side in this period was one hell of an achievement. Not just getting to 3 finals but winning them. Something like that can't just be brushed off.

13/14 Porto, Valencia, Real Betis, Benfica. Oh, and which of them was even bigger than them? Or could be counted as an upset?

14-15 Gladbach, Villarreal, Zenit, Fiorentina. Same question. Again; no upsets here. Heck Dnipro getting to the Europa League final is a 100 times a bigger achievement than Sevilla winning it is.

15-16 Oh, and he managed to not even get out of the group in Champions League. Beat Bilbao, Shakhtar, Liverpool on the way to the title. Which of these teams is worth bragging about beating? Except for Liverpool.

So he has won the Europa League for 3 years, while only beating a team better than him once. And not even been able to get out of the group stage of the Champions League.

Firstly - I said they had to beat 'decent' teams in Europe, not the fact that any of the teams I've highlighted were bigger/better than them.

Secondly - ask yourself how you'd react if he didn't win those finals or teams on the way to them. It's still a stick you'd be beating him with so it is literally pointless arguing with you because Emery, in these scenarios, is damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

You can only beat what's in front of you and winning 3 Europa League's really shouldn't be something to turn your nose up at.

Rather see Liverpool win the league than Brand City, who are buying clubs across the world to add to their image.

You mean like how liverpool are owned by 'Fenway sport group' who own multiple teams across multiple platforms to increase their brand and add to their image?

The City Football Group owns teams in England, Spain, USA, Japan and China. From what I can gather, it seems Fenway only own a rounders team and Liverpool.

2 baseball teams, a football team, a nascar racing team, and various other non sports ventures such as a cable tv company.

As plastic and tacky as they come.

Sir Matt Busby is the greatest United manager just as Bill Shankly is the greatest Liverpool manager. Without them what came later would never have happened

So my unpopular opinion to those who believe this is it's a load of old tosh.

Each dynasty needs its founding hero. That's what Busby and Shankly are to their clubs.

I'd say there is a strong argument for Ferguson being Mancheter United's greatest, given the mediocrity they had become and the unprecedented success he brought. There are maybe slight taintings for a lot of Manchester United fans because of the whole Glazer scenario where he didn't cover himself in glory and at worst damaged the club with his own greed. Busby also has the Busby Babes, the enduring tragic story of English football and the whole comeback from that was remkarable.

Shankly's only competitor is Paisley, who has the best trophy record per season in English history (though Guardiola might beat him). However, he was literally taking over from Shankly and continuing his work, a remarkable achievement in its own right but whole image of Liverpool is shaped after Shankly.

So, according to your logic, any club owned by anyone who has another business makes them plastic?

I may be biased, but I'd take plastic and tacky over despotic and blood-soaked 9 times out of 10.

Every club is somehow immoral now behind the scenes, all businesses before clubs these days. Man City and PSG transcend to a new level though given how much of a propaganda PR machine they are to show the corrupt regimes that prop them both up in a more positive light worldwide.
