23 & Me (or other genetic testing shite)

So I got pressured into doing the 23 and me thing (like on South Park haha) by my girlfriend and my results are interesting as fuck:

European 58.6%

Northwestern European 25.7%
British & Irish 10.7%
French & German 2.4%
Broadly Northwestern European 12.7%

Southern European 17.3%
Sardinian 0.5%
Broadly Southern European 16.8%

Broadly European 15.6%

Middle Eastern & North African 27.8%

Middle Eastern 27.3%

Broadly Middle Eastern & North African 0.5%

South Asian 0.8%

Broadly South Asian 0.8%

East Asian & Native American < 0.1%

East Asian < 0.1%
Japanese < 0.1%
Broadly East Asian < 0.1%

Wasn't expecting any Japanese... or South or East Asian. Pretty interesting stuff. I didn't know Sardinians had different genetic makeup than Italians/other Southern Europeans.

Oh I also got 12.7% "Unassigned" - which I feel like is fucking bullshit & I should get 12.7% of my money back.

Has anyone else done this or any shite like it?

what is it? tracing your heritage and lineage? how much does it cost?

You order a kit and you spit into a little vial and send it to them and they'll mail you info about your ancestry based on your DNA makeup.

It's $99 for the genetic test by itself in the US... it looks like in the UK you can't buy the 2 tests as separate products (which is stupid). So it's a lot more expensive in the UK at £145 (almost double - but they charge $200 for both tests in the US). That's pretty irritating they only have the two tests grouped together though... Here's the link for the UK side of their business: https://www.23andme.com/en-gb/ancestry/

My dad either done this or done one similar, but his results are my results so...

Your Fatherline Haplogroup is I-S21825 I-S21825 - Chauci Your YDNA haplogroup, what tracks your paternal lineage, takes it name from the CHAUCI, an ancient German kindred described as barbarians by Roman commentators and historians. And it is rare in Britain and Ireland. Your haplogroup I-S21825 is one that is more or less confined to Northern Europe and is both very rare and relatively young, probably only 3,000 years old. It emerged among one of the Germanic tribes of mainland Europe, probably the ancestors of the Chauci who lived on the coast of the North Sea just east of the River Weser in what is now Northern Germany. It probably arrived in Britain with the so-called Anglo-Saxon invasions and settlements of the 4th to the 6th centuries AD. I-S21825 is very much a Northern European genetic marker although rarely found. It is carried by men in Northern Germany (2%), Southern England (2%), Scotland (0.7%) and Scandinavia (0.3%). Its closest genetic branch is an extremely rare one, seen only once in Switzerland, once in Prussia, and once in the Dolomites of Northern Italy. This perhaps traces the route taken by the ancestors of the S21825 group from the centre of Europe as they headed north.

His results aren't your at all because you have your mother's DNA, he does not.

Obviously...they're also only his dad's side as you can't go back I think it's more than 1 or 2 generations on the maternal side.

You sure? The South Asian info for me is from my mum's side - my great great great grandpa was Indian (or Pakistani, but it was all India then) on my mum's side.

It was the case for how my dad had the test, they could only go back so far on his mums side. I feel like they could go back on her dads side but not her mums side actually..

What does British & Irish mean? Pre-Roman times Celtic genetics?

means you're eligible to play for the British & Irish Lions rugby team.

Sounds like a crafty way to get peoples DNA on file to me.. also sounds a lot like being down the plod shop without the bother of actually being escorted there under caution... so I have been told anyway..

All the good spit will be kept and shot into space to preserve mankind etc.. all the rubbish will be left on the windowsill to evaporate..

Pretty close xD It's just been announced that the company will be sharing its 5 Million Clients' Genetic Data with GlaxoSmithKline in order to develop "novel treatments and cures based on genetic insights from the consented 23andMe community".

I have not personally, as I think that it's weird that people are willing to send their DNA off to a lab to be tested and most certainly...stored.

However, we have done a lot of work in the family on our family tree, and I a few years ago my father submitted his DNA to ancestry.com -The results here -

Great Britain - 71%
Europe West - 12%
Ireland/Scotland/Wales - 10%
Europe East - 3%
Iberian Peninusla - 2%
Europe South - 1%
Native American - <1%

I don't know if you are familiar with the tv show Red Dwarf at all.. but in one episode titled 'Officer Rimmer' they stumble on a ship that has no crew, It stores the DNA of the crew and only prints them off if the ship is in danger.. Rimmer  uses it to create loads of versions of himself and heaps untold misery upon the rest of the crew, Lister ( the last human left alive ) decides to try and do something about it and finds out his DNA is stored in there as well... He then remembers that he once sold his DNA back on earth and that there could be hundreds of clones of him manning call centers across the known universe...

Could you imagine having the technology in the future to clone another version of you and you having no say in it whatsoever because you waived your rights on a £5 home kit..

Can't imagine a worse fate than that xD

Haven't even heard about that TV show, but it sounds like something I'd enjoy xD

If they end up cloning me for future generations to enjoy, I've done the world a favour.

I'm pretty certain you'd love Red Dwarf. Witty, relatable storylines set in a fantasy world, with plenty of stupidity for good measure. Hugely underrated.

--------

I'd love to do this test; both sides of my peasant Slavic family just so happen to come from an area of land that has been pillaged and conquered by, well, pretty much everyone from the Mongols, to the Swedes, to the Hungarians, in some way or another.

Oh, and my English grandmother had some Liverpudlian in her family history - that's surely the most terrible one of the lot... :'(
