Arturo Vidal Retires From International Football

One after another! again, not really surprising. A couple of golden generations coming to an end for a few teams.

Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal has retired from international duty at the age of 30 after Chile failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Vidal said his decision comes with his "soul crushed" after he missed Chile's final shot at qualification on Tuesday through suspension, the South American champions losing 3-0 to Brazil to miss out on the tournament in Russia next year on goal difference.

The former Juventus player, who along with Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez was part of the golden generation of Chile players that claimed the Copa America in 2015 and 2016.

"Thank you lads, for everything, for all these years together... for teaching me and for showing a country that with effort and work anything is possible in life," the Vidal wrote in Spanish on Twitter.

Chile, who were beaten by Brazil in the round of 16 at both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, were soundly beaten again by Brazil in Sao Paulo on Tuesday.

The Chileans finished level on points with Peru, who secured a two-legged playoff against New Zealand, but trailed on goal difference to be placed out of the running in sixth in the final South American qualifying table.

Chile's Argentinean manager Juan Antonio Pizzi also announced his retirement from the team after Tuesday's disappointment.

Ha, what an idiot.

"We're going to beat everyone, god wants it, we're going to the world cup" bla bla bla.

When he loses, he retires. Claudio Bravo apparently going as well. Even though he's aging, its not really the appropriate time from a moral point of view. He's a keeper as well and could probably have a go at one more qualifying cycle.

Gary Medel is the example these Chilean players should have taken. He said he still wants to play for La Roja despite going out disappointingly.

or maybe realises he'll be 34 by the time the next World Cup comes along. or 33 for next Copa America. Perhaps he feels he can prolong his club career if retiring from international football.

It wasn't the appropriate time to do it from a good moral code point of view.

This group of Chileans are sore losers. Even more than the Argentinians.

what about sacking a manager straight after a tournament?

That doesn't relate at all!

That's the federations choice, not the players themselves.

Arturo Vidal spoke so much shite in the past 2 months and it made him look like a twat. He retired after it all backfired.

has he confirmed this with you?

also, what if a manager resigns then?

I didn't mean he retired because of that - I meant it backfired and then retired. It wasn't appropriate timing and just makes him look like more of a twat.

I guess with a manager it depends, but in this case most Chileans wanted Pizzi out anyways.

Asked about his plans to retire, Vidal said: "I've been thinking about it for some time, I want to be with my family. These 10 years have been hard and the time has come to rest."

Yep - after he lost 6 points at home to Paraguay and Bolivia. Not news to me.

He really should take the example of Medel and want to continue. Even Claudio Pizarro who believes he can get called up for Peru at 39. International retirement should be done with honour in my opinion. We're talking about Vidal who made twattish quotes. Bravo is retiring at the wrong time but I guess he would make more sense due to age.

or see the quote above and it's not all about football for him? Other players have different priorities, different motivations. If he feels he can't give his country his best, why hold them back any more?

When would be the perfect time to retire then? Is it not honourable to realise you're not as good as you thought you might be, eating a bit of humble pie so to speak, and giving someone else a chance to prove themselves for their country?

He should have retired at any time other than there. Saying things like Paraguay celebrated like they won the world cup or we're going to the world cup because god wants it. We're going to beat everyone, yet partied before games and wasn't fully focused.

He didn't retire with honour, he retired as a twat. If it wasn't for his 2 Copa America wins, then the Chileans would have seen him as that. Everyone outside Chile is amused.

Ok so now age is your marker? As Stan mentions every player has different motivations painting them all with one brush makes little sense. The next Copa is 3 years, the next worldcup is 4 hes passed his prime at that point, the timing is fine. Vidal is one of the most physical players going i doubt he is going to age well, hes on the wrong side of 30 and wants to spend time with his family and less away on international duty. Fair play to him hes earned the right to decide his own future.

not the first time a footballer says something that backfires and won't be the last.

Think you need to be a bit more open to his reasons for retiring - taking in to other factors like his age or his commitments to see more of his family etc. Not just 'cos he's a twat' and he said something once.

Can't wait for your excuses when Vidal puts in a transfer request for losing the league to Dortmund and speaking arrogant shite.. I'll say "fair play to him as he's trying to decide his future".

Ah so this is a personal vendetta against a player, I forgot you have mentioned how much you dislike him and find him overrated in previous threads. Now i understand your irrational reaction to an otherwise rational decision to retire.

Its not a personal vendetta at all. Its true I don't like Vidal. Its because of these reasons that I don't.

Anyone who followed this qualifying campaign as well as the Copa America knows he's a twat. From crashing his car while drunk before an important copa game to partying in Casino's before a crucial qualifier. My friend, you are unfortunately extremely misinformed.

Do you remember that time he put in a transfer request or said he's going to retire when Leverkusen lost the title to Dortmund in 2011?

Or when Juve lost to Barca in Champions League few years ago?

Nah, me neither.

Not at all, im aware of his mistakes and his public comments, they where everywhere its hard to miss. Noone is saying hes the perfect example of a professional athlete and argueing hes a great human being but slagging him for retiring at the end of a failed qualifying campaign on the wrong side of 30, really? I get it you dont like him, that doesnt mean he hasnt earned the right to retire when he sees fit.

Claudio Pizarro, Juan Manuel Vargas and Jefferson Farfan have made silly ill disciplined mistakes that cost Peru 3 qualifications (2006, 2010 and 2014) not once did any of them even consider to retire. Claudio Pizarro is 39 and still wants to play for Peru, yet nobody wants him here!

Gary Medel is also 30 years old and he still wants to play for Chile. He has more of a right to retire than Vidal at this moment because he didn't speak utter shite prior to games, but you can see the difference in determination. Vidal isn't that determined. If he truly wants to retire with honour, he should have at least done it after the Copa America.

why?

as we've both said, different players have different motivations or priorities in life. It's clear you care not for his personal reasons and just focussing on what he's said in the past and using that to fuel your clear vendetta for him. It's not about who has more of a right to retire or not. It's what the player feels is right and if he wants to retire now after a qualifying campaign and thinks he can't take the nation any further, then so be it.
