Tottenham warned over Champions League stadium advertisement

Tottenham's new stadium is not scheduled to open until at least January 2019

Tottenham have been warned by an advertising watchdog after a promotion which claimed their new stadium would be the "only place in London" to watch Champions League football this season.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has sent the club an advice notice and told them to avoid making claims they cannot fulfill.

Spurs have used Wembley as their home, with work on their stadium overrunning.

A fan of North London rivals Arsenal complained to the ASA.

The new stadium, on the site of their old White Hart Lane ground, is now not set to open until at least January 2019.

And Tottenham face a battle to qualify for the Champions League knockout stage, needing to win both their final group matches against Inter Milan and Barcelona.

Two complaints, including one from an Arsenal supporter, were made to the advertising regulator, on 25 and 28 October.

An ASA spokesman said: "The complainants challenged whether the ad was misleading because the building work of the new stadium has not been completed, therefore it is unlikely customers will get a chance to watch Tottenham play in the Champions League at the new stadium.

"While we considered there were potential problems under our advertising rules we did not consider the issues raised were so significant as to warrant a full formal investigation. This case was assessed and dealt with via an advice notice.

"In this instance, we contacted Tottenham Hotspur and advised them to avoid making claims in future advertising that they cannot fulfill; to avoid disappointing customers. We also advised them that if the ad is still appearing to ensure it is removed. "

Spurs declined to comment, although it is understood the advert was only ever scheduled to run from May to June of this year.

Spurs are third in Group B, with two games remaining

The club announced in September they would play all three home Champions League group matches at Wembley as they continued to wait for the move into their new stadium.

Tottenham were the only London club to finish in the top four of the Premier League last season,

A digital billboard campaign, which appeared to show a picture of their unfinished 62,000-seat stadium, featured the words: "The only place to watch Uefa Champions League in London."

Underneath it said: "Time is running out to secure premium seats at Spurs' new stadium."

This one gets me more pumped up for it. Still don't think we'll be in until next year now though.

It's going to be absolutely superb, no expense spared.

Still miss the Lane though, nothing like it

xD

Yet it's a fact for 2018/19 season.

Whereas for years Arsenal had tube advertising which claimed the Emirates was the home of football :4_joy:

Granted, but at a reduced capacity, I wonder if that will hit the ENIC Groups bank balance?

Tottenham stadium: Spurs granted an extension to stay at Wembley

1 hour ago | Premier League

Tottenham have been given permission to continue playing their home matches at Wembley until their new stadium is ready - but at a reduced capacity.

Spurs were due to move into their new White Hart Lane stadium in September but the project has suffered a number of construction delays.

The club initially agreed to continue playing at Wembley until the end of the year.

They can now play there indefinitely but with a reduced capacity of 51,000.

A planning application to Brent Council is required to increase the capacity to 62,000 with "additional limited exceptions" at 90,000.

The council had granted special dispensation to allow Tottenham to play the entire 2017-18 season at Wembley at full capacity.

The club had hoped to be in their new 62,062-seater stadium by the start of the current campaign. During the summer, this was changed to the 15 September meeting with Liverpool.

Just over a month before that game, Tottenham said that because of "issues with the critical safety systems" their move had been delayed. On 26 October, they confirmed all remaining games in 2018 would be played at Wembley, with chairman Daniel Levy saying it was still not possible to "confirm an exact opening date and fixture".

Now that deadline has been extended indefinitely, with the stadium not expected to open until January 2019 at the earliest. The club say they will provide a further update on the stadium's progress in December.

Tottenham's next match at Wembley is against Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday, November 24. That will be the final game, pending any further appeal to Brent Council, that Spurs will be allowed to use the stadium at its full capacity.

Might be the only time this season that United get to play at Wembley O.o

Tottenham stadium update: Spurs v Man Utd to be played at Wembley

52 minutes ago | Tottenham

Tottenham's home game against Manchester United on 13 January will be at Wembley, as the club continues to wait for their new stadium to be ready.

Spurs were due to move into the new White Hart Lane stadium in September, but the project has suffered a number of construction delays.

The club initially agreed to continue playing at Wembley until the end of the year.

In November, they were told they could play there indefinitely.

"We are acutely conscious that we are asking fans to go to Wembley for far longer than any of us wanted to," said Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

"However we are now seeing the progress that we needed to see."

He added: "What I don't want to do is set any firm dates until we have finally achieved a safety certificate."

An update from the contractors is expected in the week commencing 7 January.

In a statement, the club said: "Testing is being conducted both during the day and night, and our contractors will continue to work during the Christmas period. Barring no further significant issues, we should then be in a position to schedule test events."

Tottenham stadium: Supporters impressed during a tour of South Stand

1 hour ago | Tottenham

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was due to open in August this year

Tottenham supporters said the club's new stadium has "surpassed anything we'd imagined" at a fan familiarisation event held on Sunday.

Located at the old White Hart Lane site, it was due to open in August but is now expected to be ready early in the new year.

The stadium, which will also host NFL games, has a 62,062 seating capacity.

Several thousand season ticket-holders were allowed to explore the South Stand.

Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust tweeted: "Hugely positive day at the South Stand familiarisation event. Congrats, Spurs. You've created a stadium that's surpassed anything we'd ever imagined. Cannot wait to come home."

Supporter Chris Paouros tweeted: "What a day! The new stadium is really quite something. So exciting to be in a new place that feels so much like home."

It’s not actually taken that long to build - it’s gone up really quickly but that’s half the problem, expectations were raised by our proposed opening date when in reality we should have said we were going to be away for two years to begin with.

It’s so impressive though, can’t wait to get home

Arsenal fans are so weird honestly, proper obsessed with us.

Another bizarre post, why on earth should we be responsible for fly tipping or littering? The council are incredibly lucky we have built the stadium we have here, remained in the area and committed so many jobs and redevelopment to the area. They need to meet their end of the bargain

£280m has been cut from Haringey councils budget since 2010. If the place isn't very clean it's most likely because the council don't have the resources and prioritise to other areas. Most of North London's public bins aren't emptied frequently enough these days.
