According to CIES Football Observatory who puts values on players according to a combination of complicated factors, Samuel Umtiti is the highest valued defender in the world if any club all of a sudden wanted to try and break his contract with FC Barcelona and acquire his services. The organisation has put the value of €101.5m (£96.1m) on his shoulders which must make the technical members of the board team very happy seeing as they only paid €25m for the young French player... His price value has quadrupled! The Barça central defender is situated in 25th place of a long list of the most valuable players, a list which has Neymar situated in first place valued at €213m which is almost what PSG paid for him (€220) making him the most expensive signing in the history of the game last summer. To find the next highest ranking bunch of defenders where price is concerned we have to go further down the list to 32nd and 35th place where we see John Stones and Eric Dier who are valued at €93.7m and €93m respectively. Philippe Coutinho who has just moved to Barça and is currently the second most expensive signing in the history of the game is valued at €123m and finds himself in 16th position of the list, immediately behind his new colleague Luis Suárez valued at €128.7m. I don't think he should be that high valued but if you say he's the highest valued defender in the world without giving a price, I'd probably say its correct. Matić plays for an English Premier League club which means that you’re already paying over the odds for a player here and the reason he would be valued higher than Busquets. Dembélé has yet to prove anything so his position on a value scale is correct by relation. Rashford is English playing for an English Premier League club (see the first paragraph) and the fact he’s English adds an extra premium on top of the fact he’s playing in the Premier League. Pogba has damaged his value and it’s normal that has gone down. Morata has been a sub before arriving at Chelsea and after this season we can look at what the CIES have decided then. Nothing wrong with this at all apart from a few anomalies. Remember this is about value being calculated for various factors and in no way is this related to how good a player is apart from the obvious names.
