The 23-year-old has been charged after an incident in which a man was allegedly threatened with a gun, assaulted and robbed

Villarreal defender Ruben Semedo has been arrested and held without bail for kidnapping, theft and assault charges.

On Thursday, Semedo was denied bail as a judge ruled he must be held in prison until his trial is complete due to a risk of escape or recidivism.

The charges stem from an incident in which a victim was allegedly tied up, robbed, beaten and held by Semedo and two other men on February 12.

Semedo and the other two men allegedly threatened to cut off the victim's fingers and fired a gun in his direction in an act of intimidation.

The victim reportedly suffered a broken ankle and had a computer, several watches, and £21,000 stolen.

Police also found an illegal firearm when searching Semedo's home following the incident.

It wasn't the first off-field trouble for the Portugal U-21 international, who was also arrested in November for an altercation in a nightclub. That trial is still yet to take place.

The 23-year-old signed for the Yellow Submarine from Sporting CP during the summer but has only made four La Liga appearances due to injuries.

Don't think Villarreal will be signing any Sporting Lisbon players any time soon... €14M for a gangster.

When you're playing in La Liga and making good money you've pretty much made it in your life, and the only crime you should be commiting is tax dodging

These ghetto kids that become footballers sometimes go down the wrong path and waste their talent, but I've never heard of something quite like this. He must be surrounded by terrible people.

This - To us, they have made it, but some of these guys that were raised in the slums don't know a good thing when they have it.

This is very extreme though.

Manslaughter and murder are both homicide.

With lazy statements like this you can also drawn nonsensical similarities between a 'crime of passion' and the holocaust, as they are both homicide. You know there is a difference between someone getting in a car with a drunk person and dying in a crash, and someone being attacked during a burglarly.

Intent to murder is a big time crime. This ain’t ABH or GBH... This is the law stating you intended to kill someone (murder) and failed in that attempt. That accusation if proved beyond a reasonable doubt is almost at the level (very little between the two and is negligible as to punishment) of committing murder itself.

Imagine being a professional footballer and commiting a burglary.

Machado explains it well. Social structures and everything that surrounds them are to blame here. Now whether you want to ultimately blame capitalism or governments themselves, we can have a debate. But this is the result and a career based on a lack of cultural assimilation and a good upbringing is paramount. This is class difference at the essence of the problem.

They both belong in prison. But they're footballers in/from Spain, let's see what happens.
