Shit! Nearly forgot!

. . . . 93 days to go !!!!!

Now 93 and World Cups don't really have much in common. So today we can pay homeage to some of the people that are going to MAKE THIS THE GREATEST WORLD CUP EVER that were born in '93!

These include Argentina's bad boy Mauro Icardi, footballs forgotten man Julian Draxler, England's only hope and @Storts boy Harry Kane, Everton legend Big Sexy Rom, Euro '16 winner Raphael Guerreiro, French defenders Umtiti and Varane, Crystal Palace striker Connor Wickham, and @DeadLinesman's favourite United player.... PAUL POGBA!!!

92 days to go!!!

.... & what do 92 and the World Cup have in common?

92 is the exact number of goals former world champions Spain have scored. The most memorable of those 92 goals was Andres Iniesta’s volley past Maarten Stekelenburg in the Final of South Africa 2010, a strike that gave Spain their only world title.

Will they make 100 Goals after this tournament? Probably not looking at their strikers.

91 days to go!!!!

Now what does '91 and the World Cup have in common??

Well, legend has it that in 1991 a man walked in to The Nazareth Baptist Church with a metal horn. He was annoyed and upset that this metal horn was not allowed to be taken in to a nearby sports ground. So with that, they remodelled this horn from metal to plastic, and what was created.....

THE VUVUZELA!!! :banana::banana::banana::banana:

mv66VfhuvWogo6pjhJemGNA.jpg.1bda21a7a6966ff7bf5f1fa29e8c79b2.jpg

In 2010 The Vuvuzela took off as a fashion item quicker that a pair of @SirBalon's skinny jeans and everybody in South Africa couldn't wait to get there hands on one. Cristiano Ronaldo hated them, The Dutch coach banned them from training sessions, but Sepp Blatter loved them. It was estimated that they sold in the region of £20,000,000 world wide.

87 DAYS TO GO!!!

Now what do 87 and The World Cup have in common?

Holland and Germany is one of Football's most famous rivalries. For Holland, the origins of the rivalry are primarily based on the anti-German sentiment resulting from World War II.

Now what does 87 have in common? The origins of the football rivalry started in the 1974 World Cup final, where it took Holland just 87 seconds to open the scoring! The fastest goal in World Cup final history.

However despite being strong favorites, Holland lost to Germany which resulted in a national trauma referred to as: "The mother of all defeats".

It would not be until 1988, when Holland beat Germany in their own country and went on to become the new European Champions, that the public pressure on the Dutch team relaxed.

Key facts from last couple of days:

89 - The amount of caps Michael Owen went on to make for England after his breathtaking World Cup '98 introduction.

88 - The minute Mario Gotze came on and upstaged Messi to win the World Cup for Germany.

86 days to go .....

Now what do 86 and The World Cup have in common?....

Copa Mundial de Fútbol México '86!!

Initially this tournament was meant to be held in Columbia, but they had to resign predominantly due to economical reasons.

Mexico '86 produced some great moments. Argentina, captained by a 25 year old named Diego Maradona, beat West Germany in the final 3-2. Diego Maradona in particular was the most talked about name following the competiton. Maradona scored the "Hand of God" goal, as well as another voted "Goal of the Century", in the same quarter-final against England. These were two of the five goals that Maradona scored during the tournament. However he did not do enough to win the golden boot, which went to England forward Gary Lineker.

The competition also saw the arrival of The Mexican Wave, which is nearly as legendary and as iconic as The Vuvuzela.

Gyan-2.jpg

84 Days: 84 African players have scored at the World Cup. The highest being Asamoah Gyan with six goals. What a shame he didn't make the most out of his talent.

250px-MFdSantos-Garrincha.jpg

83 Days: 1983 was the year where the legendary Garrincha passed away. The Brazillian Striker, who won the World Cup in 1958 and 1962, is still regarded by many as the greatest dribbler in football history.

82 DAYS GUYS! 82 DAYS TO GO! THAT'S LESS THAN 3 MONTHS!! OH MY GOD!!!

Now what does 82 and the World Cup have in common?

spa_82.png

Espana '82!!! :banana::banana::banana:

And what was so special about Espana '82? Not only was this the last time El Salvador and Kuwait qualified for a World Cup, this World Cup was also a complete head fuck as they extended the teams from 16 to 24 (no offence @SirBalon).

They made it a lot more difficult than it needed to be.

Quote

The first round was a 'round-robin' group stage containing six groups of four teams each. Two points were awarded for a win and one for a draw, with goal difference used to separate teams equal on points. The top two teams in each group advanced. In the second round, the twelve remaining teams were split into four groups of three teams each, with the winner of each group progressing to the knockout semi-final stage.

The composition of the groups in the second round was predetermined before the start of the tournament. In the aggregate, Groups A and B were to include one team from each of Groups 1 through 6, and Groups C and D included the remaining six teams. The winners of Groups 1 and 3 were in Group A whilst the runners-up were in Group C. The winners of Groups 2 and 4 were in Group B whilst the runners-up were in Group D. The winner of Group 5 was in Group D whilst the runner-up was in Group B. The winner of Group 6 was in Group C whilst the runner-up was in Group A. Thus, Group A mirrored Group C, and Group B mirrored Group D with the winners and runners-up from the first round being placed into opposite groups in the second round.

The second-round groups that mirrored each other (based on the first-round groupings) faced off against each other in the semifinals. Thus, the Group A winner played the Group C winner, and the Group B winner player the Group D winner. This meant that if two teams which played in the same first-round group both emerged from the second round, they would meet for the second time of the tournament in a semifinal match. It also guaranteed that the final match would feature two teams that had not previously played each other in the tournament. As it turned out, Italy and Poland who were both in Group 1 in the first round, each won their second-round groups and played each other in a semifinal match.

Confusing. I know.

Group 2 saw one of the great World Cup upsets on the first day with the 2–1 victory of Algeria over reigning European Champions West Germany. In the final match in the group, West Germany met Austria. This came on to be known as 'The Disgrace of Gijón'.

Algeria had already played their final group game the day before, and West Germany and Austria knew that a West German win by 1 or 2 goals would qualify them both, while a larger German victory would qualify Algeria over Austria, and a draw or an Austrian win would eliminate the Germans. After West Germany scored, the two teams kicked the ball around aimlessly for the rest of the match. Fans of all nations were disgusted. Algeria protested to FIFA, who ruled that the result be allowed to stand.

As a result, FIFA introduced a revised qualification system at subsequent World Cups in which the final two games in each group were played simultaneously.

What a cluster fuck of a World Cup.

What a cluster fuck of a World Cup.

That World Cup will always be remembered by me for two reasons...

  1. The greatest World Cup team (Brazil) not to have won it... That Brazil side was beyond magic.
  2. The King Of Spain (born in Italy) stated before the competition that if he couldn't give the cup to Spain, it had to be Italy.

;):congrats:
