the club in a dire position. Also due to falling attendances in addition to staffing costs.

Sunderland will close the Stadium of Light's upper concourse to home fans from next season, to save on staffing costs and 'improve match atmosphere'.

The decision was prompted by a drop in attendances to an average of 27,692 per game in a 49,000-seat stadium.

About 1,500 season ticket holders are affected, and have been sent a letter offering different seats at the same price for the next three seasons.

Away supporters will remain in the upper tier of the stadium.

Corporate hospitality and the directors box will also continue to be seated in that part of the ground.

The letter says: "The decision has now been taken to close the Premier Concourse at the end of this season to both season card holders and match sales, unless demand dictates that additional capacity is required.

"We believe that closing the Premier Concourse will help us to improve match atmosphere, whilst also reducing the costs associated with safety stewards and kiosk staff in the area."

Although attendances are down, Sunderland's average is the fourth best in the Championship - but their form this season means the club could be in League One next season.

If relegated, it would be the first time in 30 years the club had dropped as low as the third tier.

Arsenal should try this as well... get all 210 of their fans right behind the dugout rather than spaced out around the ground trying to make it look full each match day.... Don't know how they are going to improve the atmosphere though.. more atmosphere on the moon than there is at the emirates

Change this to the Championship thread someone...

That club is the very definition of a sinking ship. Can't help but feel the longer they preserved their ridiculous run of beating the drop through being reactive, the longer the damage in the long run.

Sunderland below Burton Albion in the league table. Fucking hell.

No surprise and it makes sense. We did the same after relegation from the PL and lower attendances by shutting the Blackburn end upper. There is no point wasting money on bills on staff and utilities. May as well try to create a bit of a better atmosphere by having fans in the same area of the stadium.

Not just that but they haven't won at home in about 27 years right? I know you can't just turn up when your team is winning but Sunderland are something else.

heard a stat today that they they've only won once in 64 games after going behind.

Is there any reason for the away fans to still be stuck in the upper tier? I thought there was a new rules that away fans must be offered seats on the bottom tier of stadiums now?

It's a bit of a farce if the upper tiers are all shut and they are still stuck there.

That rule is only in the Premier League.

@Kitchen Sales trip back up north has been ruined...

Sunderland will close their cash turnstiles for their remaining home matches in order to prevent the attendance of Newcastle fans planning to celebrate the club's likely relegation to League One.

The decision was taken after the club discovered that a section of Newcastle fans intended to support Sunderland's opposition in their final two fixtures at the Stadium of Light, taking advantage of the cheaper ticket prices on the doors.

Sky Sports News understands that tickets for the games against Burton and Wolves will only be available from the ticket office, where customers with the required purchase history can be vetted.
