A statement from Manchester United read: 'Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage.

'The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery. His family request privacy in this matter.'

Doesn't sound good at all. I hope he makes a full recovery. Such an iconic figure for football. :(

This news has really made me feel shit. He’s been such an iconic figure in football in my lifetime and it’s terrible to see this news tonight.

I hope that he can make a full recovery.

Everyone should forget stupid football tribalism at a time like this and wish him the best.

He needs to stop watching United play.

Great thing to hear that everything has gone well. One of those blokes who'd you assume is indestructable given who he is

He's like your TV granddad who you either loved or hated depending not on who you supported.

Hopefully he makes a full recovery

My cousin has had this problem, luckily she lived but she's in her 20's. Ferguson is an old man. Hopefully he makes it through this.

Rivalries put to the side when things like this happen. Don't care if he's from them, I hope he pulls through and is ok.

Some good news, reports are that he's awake and discussing his results with his doctors.

Fair play to Rooney for visiting Sir Alex Ferguson in hospital.

"His speech is improving and he can nearly string a sentence together", says fergie.
