Martin Allen Leaves Barnet & Takes Chesterfield Job

Recommended Posts

Martin Allen has left his position as Barnet manager - in what was his fifth spell in charge at the club - following their relegation to the National League.

Barnet were relegated on the final day of the League Two season despite their 3-0 win against Chesterfield.

Goals from John Akinde, Richard Brindley and Alex Nicholls were not enough to retain their Football League status as Morecambe drew 0-0 with Coventry to take 22nd spot.

so he's staying in non-league but will be managing Chesterfield instead!

Martin Allen will be named the next Chesterfield manager following their relegation to the National League, according to Sky sources.

Allen turned down the chance to continue as manager at Barnet, who were also relegated back to non-league football along with the Spireites.

The 52-year-old former QPR and West Ham player promoted Barnet back to the EFL as manager in 2015 and kept them up the following season in his fourth spell in charge at the North London club.

He left the following season to join Eastleigh, which proved to be a short-lived spell, before returning to Barnet earlier this year following the departure of Graham Westley.

Allen previously won League Two with Gillingham in 2013 and has had spells in charge of Brentford, MK Dons, Leicester, Cheltenham and Notts County.

He is expected to be announced by the Spireites on Tuesday to replace Jack Lester, who was dismissed following the club's first relegation into non-league football since re-joining in 1921.

I think this is a ridiculous decision from Martin Allen.

Chesterfield may be a bigger club than Barnet but I read after their relegation that they had the fifth highest budget in League Two this season with a number of their players remaining under contract and without relegation clauses in their contracts. That’s just mental and disgraceful management by somebody at the club as the players, you’d assume, aren’t worthy of their relatively large wages and having no relegation clauses is another stupid move from somebody. This from the club who are trying to release an all-black away kit despite it being against the rules of the National League. There’s clearly people at Chesterfield who are not good enough.

It’s quite a job on Allen’s hands, maybe that’s what has turned his head. Maybe he fancies himself as the man who can rebuild a whole club and the man to trim the wage budget there compared with the safety net of Barnet that he’s so used to but on the other hand, Chesterfield will enter a transitional period, it’s inevitable, but I do wonder how much time they’d give a manager compared with Barnet, who would afford Allen time to do a job.
