Should add to the title... attacked by their own fans.

Tension has been building between fans, players, manager and president for some months now... joke of a club ran by a lunatic.

If you read the Portuguese football thread here you should get an idea of the kind of stuff that goes on inside that club.

As for the exact event that triggered this... a 1-2 loss against Maritimo that resulted in Sporting being out of the Champions League next season. Many believe a few players didn't try enough or played badly on porpuse in order to force a move out of the club... including their captain, goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

This is a disgrace to Portuguese football, a dark day. Greece/Turkey level of shithousery.

  • The title was changed to Sporting Lisbon Players Attacked By Own Fans

Everything started to boil after Sporting lost in Madrid, against Atlético. Bruno de Carvalho (BDC) publicly, through his Facebook account, criticized the players performance in that game. The players responded and BDC announced that the entire squad was suspended. After Jesus stood by his players, he managed to convince BDC from dropping the suspensions.

This Monday, like Machado said, after losing the last league game and ending third in the table, being relegated to the Europa League in consequence, he decided to suspend Jesus. Some of the big squad names (Patrício, William) stood by their manager. And today this happened.

Some people saying that the attack was ordered by BDC, because he was not in Alcochete when this happened. Players considering leaving the club, by rescission of the contract.

Utterly embarrassing, not only for the club, but for the Portuguese football and the image of the country, as a whole. This is something that you see happening in poorer countries/countries with nut job fans.

This has no place in football.

The chairman picked on Dost after they went out of Europe as well, Dost was dropped because of it.

Rui Patricio, Willam Carvalho, Gelson Martins and Bruno Fernandes have decided to terminate their contracts with Sporting CP citing unsafe conditions after the team was attacked by 50 masked men.

Club President, Bruno de Carvalho, has stated that he would take legal action against players that terminate their contracts so their departure from the club may not be fully settled yet.

Sporting CP had reportedly rejected bids from clubs for the players mentioned before they decided to terminate their contracts.

Rui Patricio, William Cavalho and Gelson Martins have been heavily linked with a move to England.

Sporting Lisbon president Bruno de Carvalho has offered to stand down in a bid to prevent a number of the club's key players rescinding their contracts.

He should have done this immediately after the attacks, instead of letting shit spiral way out of control. This is entirely his fault by inviting these "fans" to attack their players.

Bas Dost is apparently staying now. Quite surprised about that.

Because no one else wanted to pay him a stupid salary thats why,  Dost is having some kind of mental breakdown since the attack, he even quit International football.

  • The title was changed to Sporting Lisbon Want €175m For Players Who Quit
Quote

Sporting Lisbon want compensation of up to 197m euros (£175m) for three players who terminated their contracts and have since joined other clubs.

Among the players is Rui Patricio, who joined Premier League newcomers Wolves.

Sporting want 57m euros (£50m) for the Portugal goalkeeper, 100m euros (£89m) for Atletico Madrid winger Gelson Martins, and 30-40m euros (£27m-£36m) for Olympiakos winger Daniel Podence.

Nine players quit the club after an attack at the training ground in May.

Sporting say they have reported Martins, Patricio and Podence - and their new clubs - to world governing body Fifa.

They say the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) will decide whether to side with the players or Sporting.

Midfielder William Carvalho was another to terminate his contract, but Real Betis paid Sporting 20m euros (£18m) in compensation after his move there.

And Bruno Fernandes - another midfielder - rejoined Sporting, signing a new five-year deal with a 100m euro (£89m) release clause.

A group of 50 fans reportedly attacked Sporting players and staff in May after the club missed out on a Champions League place on the final day of the season.

In April, former Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho claimed to have suspended 19 first-team players after a Europa League defeat by Atletico Madrid, although he deleted the post on social media and most of the players featured in their next game.

De Carvalho has since quit the club after fans voted for him to resign, with Sousa Cintra put in temporary charge until elections are held in September.

Sinisa Mihajlovic, De Carvalho's managerial appointment, was sacked after nine days and replaced by Jose Peseiro, who has returned for his second spell.

I suspect the organisation that represents the players in this case will have a lot to say about it.

That's a hefty amount of compensation to ask for despite players' security not being guaranteed at the time of the attacks they had to suffer. Surely players could ask for compensation as well?
