Livingston Win Playoffs; David Hopkin Leaves

An absolutely huge turnaround at the club, thanks to David Hopkin. Only took over two and a half years ago, and has put back-to-back promotions together. Their wage bill isn't even in the top half of the Championship and their victory over Thistle was convincing. Their only fit striker for these playoffs was 35-year-old Lee Miller, released by Falkirk in January. They aren't a stranger to rising and falling in Scottish football's ladder, but this may be their most remarkable run and it's not a bad start to Hopkin's managerial career.

They will start next season as heavy favourites for relegation, and people will bemoan another 'small' club in the Premiership, but they have earnt their spot and, as shown in previous years, it is quite difficult to earn promotion through the playoffs. Rangers, Hibs and Dundee United have all failed to gain promotion through the playoffs and they have much larger resources to call upon.

Fantastic job David Hopkin has done. Unfortunately though, it sounds like he may be off.

Where to?

He's said he's had interest from rival clubs, so I imagine it will be another Scottish side like St Mirren.

Are St Mirren in the premier league?

Livingston have confirmed manager David Hopkin is leaving the club after rejecting an offer of a new contract.

Hopkin, who was on a one-year deal, has led Livingston to back-to-back promotions, guiding them from League One to the Premiership.

The former Scotland international has decided not to renew his contract amid interest from other clubs, leaving assistant David Martindale to take temporary charge at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

Ross County: Livingston trip in doubt due to norovirus

Ross County's Scottish Premiership game at Livingston on Saturday is in serious doubt with the Highland side's squad "hit hard" by norovirus.

Ten players at Global Energy Stadium have become unwell with the winter vomiting bug since training on Tuesday.

Just eight remain fit, with co-manager Steven Ferguson saying their plight was "very critical".

No request to postpone has been made yet, but the SPFL is monitoring the situation.

"We've had to cancel training today, we've cleared the building and, regarding the players, 10 of them have got this winter sickness bug," Ferguson said.

"We're following orders of the doctors and medical staff, everybody has been sent home and we just have to wait and see what happens in the next 24 hours.

"That gives us a huge problem when we're looking to build up to our game on Saturday."

The NHS says symptoms start suddenly within one to two days of being infected and advises anyone with norovirus to stay off work for 48 hours after they have stopped.

County sits seventh in the Premiership table, one place and one point ahead of Livingston and with a game in hand.

Livingston: Gary Holt resigns as head coach after 27 months in charge

Gary Holt has resigned "with great regret" as Livingston head coach.

Livingston are 10th in the Scottish Premiership having taken only a point from their last five games, and Holt admitted he was considering his future following Saturday's loss to St Mirren.

After replacing Kenny Miller in August 2018, Holt led the newly-promoted club to ninth place and they finished fifth in last term's curtailed campaign.

"This is not a decision I have taken lightly," the 47-year-old said.

"But I feel it is the right time for me to step away. I am proud to say the work we have done over the past two years has resulted in great success both on and off the pitch."

Head of football operations David Martindale and goalkeeping coach Tony Caig will take charge on an interim basis, with Livingston's next match a League Cup last-16 tie at home to Ayr United on Saturday.

Martindale says Holt's Livingston became a victim of their own success as they "raised everyone's expectations" with their achievements of the past two seasons.

"So when we don't quite hit those heights again it can feel like something needs to change and I totally understand Gary's thought process," said Martindale.

"Gary can leave Livingston knowing he has left us in a better place than when he arrived."

Under former Scotland cap Holt, Livingston's home form was the foundation of their top-fix finish last term, with 28 points and just two defeats from 14 games the best record outside the Old Firm.

But this season they have lost five of eight games at the Tony Macaroni Stadium and their away form - five points from a possible 21 - is the worst in the division.
