Former Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri is set to be offered a return to management with Serie A strugglers Palermo. Italian Ranieri would be Palermo's fifth manager of the season if he replaces Diego Lopez. (Corriere dello Sport, via Marca)

He should retire on the high of winning the Premier League and nearly getting relegated.

Think Spalleti deserved it a bit more personally. Sarri has been good but he's made a lot of mistakes this season anyhow. Basically missed a Plan B after Milik's injury and had to wait for Mertens to grab form as a 9. Spalleti has given Roma personality and got them playing well consistently which is something they've been missing since their first season with Rudi Garcia.

With the win yesterday, Foggia assured themselves of automatic promotion. They will be moving up to Serie B.

Visited this city and met a guy who was a Foggia ST Holder. Hung out with some of the other Ultras when I was there, with almost all of them having a tattoo of Zemen. Absolutely happy for the city, team, and of course, the fans!

19 year old Napoli BWM wants to play for Italy according to footballitalia.

Would it be a good decision though? He's similar to Verratti but I guess he could win a few caps. Still has to become an Italian citizen though so this could be 5 years ahead.

Gagliardini, Veratti, Marchisio, and Bonaventura are a few midfielders. I think he stands a chance.

RIP Giuliano Sarti

Legendary former Inter and Fiorentina goalkeeper Giuliano Sarti has died at the age of 83 after a sudden illness.

The Italian international was the man between the posts for Helenio Herrera’s ‘Grande Inter’ winning two Scudetti and two European Cups with the Nerazzurri.

He was also a Fiorentina hero, helping the Viola to their first-ever Scudetto.

Having started his career in the youth sides of first San Matteo della Decima and then Centese, Sarti began his career with Bondenese.

After two seasons in Emilia-Romagna, he moved to Fiorentina at the age of just 22 ahead of the 1955-56 season.

With Sarti in goal, the Viola conquered the first Scudetto in their history, losing just one match which was against Genoa on the final day with the title already secured.

The goalkeeper conceded just 20 goals in the 34 League games that season.

The following campaign saw the Italian champions reach the European Cup final, but Fulvio Bernardini’s men were defeated by Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

Sarti also won a Coppa Italia and the Cup Winners’ Cup with Fiorentina, before joining Inter in 1963.

It is popularly said in Italy that all Interisti can name by rote the team which made up the ‘Grande Inter’: Sarti, Burgnich, Facchetti, Bedin, Guarneri, Picchi, Jair, Mazzola, Peirò, Suarez, Corso.

The Nerazzurri swept all before them in the coming years, winning the Scudetto in 1965 and 1966, as well as the European Cup in 1964 and 1965 - each of those triumphs also followed by the European Cup.

The 1966-67 season brought heartbreak though, as Herrera’s men threw away the chance for a third consecutive Scudetto and a third European Cup in four years.

Though Sarti was excellent in the latter, Celtic’s ‘Lisbon Lions’ defeated the ‘Grande Inter’. Legend has it that the Scottish supporters gave the Inter goalkeeper a round of applause when they saw him in the airport after the match.

A rare mistake from Sarti in the final matchof Serie A against Mantova also saw Juventus pip the Beneamata to the Scudetto by one point.

The goalkeeper spent another year with the Nerazzurri before winding down his career with a brief spell at Juventus and three seasons in Serie D with Unione Valdinievole.

A move into Coaching proved largely unsuccessful, but Sarti will always be remembered as the first name uttered by Inter fans when they recite their greatest team.

Official: Inzaghi at Lazio until 2020

As expected, Simone Inzaghi has signed a new contract with Lazio that runs to June 2020 after a very successful campaign.

A brief statement confirmed the news this afternoon, noting Inzaghi will lead the team for the next three seasons.

Inzaghi had originally been brought in as caretaker manager for final few weeks of last term after Stefano Pioli’s dismissal.

He was then recalled once pre-season training had already begun when talks broke down with Marcelo Bielsa.

The second choice ended up taking Lazio to fifth place in Serie A and the Coppa Italia Final against Juventus.

Inzaghi spent much of his playing career with the Aquile and then became their youth team Coach.

A mess of a club in recent years, with an owner that should have been banned from football years ago. Juric was appointed last summer, sacked in February, brought back in April and now sacked again. If he lands up back as manager later this season, it won't exactly be a shock. The general running of the club has been a farce for years now, even managing to miss out on a European spot because of failing to fill in some paperwork correctly.

They should never have let Gasperini go last summer, and he showed why with Atalanta last season. Their go-to-guy Davide Ballardini has already been linked with a third spell in charge.

Frankly, the performance of the club is far more of a systematic problem than the manager. When the owners are more invested in Watford and it's no coincidence that Udinese were one of the best-run clubs in Serie A for years, punching far above their weight with consistently high finishes. Including back to back qualification for the Champions League at the start of this decade.

Now, if their scouting network identifies a talented player he isn't going to Udinese... He's off to England. That's not how a football club is meant to operate. And how can a manager operate knowing that if he has a player that does really well, they'll be moved on to England without the financial windfall that another manager at another club would get? Yet, nothing will change.

I think it's a bit much to sack him. Torino are still in a very decent position in Serie A (and have been badly affected by Belotti's injuries this season) and just had a good run in the Coppa Italia. Last season they were horrid defensively and they been improved in that respect (now they have a competent keeper in Sirigu). This is not a team that was going to improve with their best player missing significant game time (and being half-fit when he rushed back from injury) and selling two of their best players in the summer. Quite frankly, you cannot expect to improve results in those circumstances, yet they aren't far from last season and look a better-coached team this season than last. Mihajlovic could have been building something over a number of years and, typically in football, just couldn't have a tricky spell for a while.

Foggia owner arrested
By Football Italia staff

Foggia owner Fedele Sannella has been arrested in connection with alleged money laundering.

The club has already been accused of tax fraud, with prosecutors alleging that honorary vice-President Ruggiero Massimo Curci paid players and staff in cash to avoid paying tax.

Yesterday in Rome though Sannella was arrested, accused of receiving and laundering some of the money which arose from Curci’s activities.

In total €378,750 is alleged to have been used to pay players, coaches and agents under the table, with Curci arrested in December.

The former vice-President has been accused of money laundering and of being part of a criminal network which favoured the Catanian mafia in Milan and Brianza.

It’s alleged that some of the dirty money ended up in Foggia’s coffers in 2015-16 and 2016-17, which is why Sannella was arrested.

Foggia risk a three or four point deduction in Serie B, and Gazzetta dello Sport reports that they could even have a commissioner appointed to run the club.

It’s common practice for the judiciary to appoint a commissioner to a business when there’s suspected mafia involvement, but it’s never happened to a professional club before.

A hearing is set for February 13 at which it will be decided whether that measure will be applied.

Already it's been a bad year for Foggia who are struggling heavily in Serie B. This doesn't bode will for them this year as it could result in extra penalties or fines.

Alessandro Del Piero and Ruud Gullit are among the legends inducted into Italian football’s Hall of Fame in today’s ceremony.

Every year since 2011, 10 names have been inducted into the Hall of Fame

In December the FIGC announced the inductees for 2017, and the official ceremony took place today.

Del Piero has made more appearances and scored more goals than anyone else for Juventus, and won the World Cup with Italy in 2006.

In total he made 705 appearances for the Bianconeri, scoring 290 goals and winning six Scudetti - not including the two revoked in the Calciopoli scandal - as well as the Champions League, the Coppa Italia and the Intercontinental Cup.

Gullit was a key part of Arrigo Sacchi’s famous Milan side, with the Dutchman winning three Scudetti and two European Cups with the Rossoneri, before lifting the Coppa Italia with Sampdoria.

Italian football Hall of Fame:

Italian players: Roberto Baggio (2011), Paolo Maldini (2012), Franco Baresi (2013), Fabio Cannavaro (2014), Gianluca Vialli (2015), Giuseppe Bergomi (2016), Alessandro Del Piero (2017)

Foreign players: Michel Platini (2011), Marco Van Basten (2012), Gabriel Batistuta (2013), Diego Armando Maradona (2014), Ronaldo (2015), Paulo Roberto Falcão (2016), Ruud Gullit (2017)

Amazing game, some class players on off and played in the true spirit of football.

I got incredibly nostalgic watching the highlights of that testimonial. What a great career Pirlo has had for both sides in that testimonial to have been so fucking filled with so many former world class players + other true legends of the game... and also Guiseppi Favalli.

Inter is reportedly in negotations for Malcom, and also for Mousa Dembélé. With the return to Champions League, they´re building a good squad. Saw this on Twitter and it looks solid:

this would be a top class squad except D'ambrosio. I know he is the only Italian in this staring 11 but he is not good enough. I hope we sign Florenzi who's the best right back in Italy. (at least in my opinion)
