Time of First Goal - 18'. @Viva la FCB will now win the competition if France win the final and force it into a tie breaker. @Devon Von Devon is the only other man left standing but needs Croatia to come back and win the tie to eliminate the other three players. A ridiculously close run thing, with Viva edging out @Devon Von Devon, @The Artful Dodger and @...Dan. All four finalists were able to pick seven consecutive winners at what was a very unpredictable World Cup. This sent us to a tie breaker, who would score the first goal in the Final? Nobody called the own goal, so we had to go to Time of First Goal to separate our survivors. Predicting the earliest time of the four men, @Viva la FCB's 28th minute call was closer than anyone else to Mandzukic' 18th minute own goal. Thanks to all for taking part. Subscriber RandoEFC+ 7,640 Posted July 15, 2018 Author Subscriber Share Posted July 15, 2018 Last Man Standing - World Cup Review At the end of a great competition like the 2018 World Cup Last Man Standing competition at Talk Football 365, it is always appropriate to spend some time looking back at the key moments that got us out of our seats over the last month. This isn't the BBC or Sky Sports, so there will be no montage with 'Elbow - One Day Like This' playing in the background. However, this will serve as a review of the World Cup in Russia, as well as a reminder of how things panned out in our little competition, and where we lack in music and slow-motion celebrations, we will more than make up for in a last flurry of GIFs and irritating notifications as I tag people who were knocked out of the competition three weeks ago. Round One The Last Man Standing World Cup Opening Ceremony - it's the 14th of June and the 23-man squads of 31 other footballing nations have traveled to Russia from all five continents to take part in the World Cup. At the same time, thirty-five men and women from England, Scotland, America, Australia, Germany, Portugal, Brazil, Holland, India, Spain, Mexico, Ukraine, Canada and even Lithuania, hoping to claim the prestigious Last Man Standing crown made their first picks from a first round of sixteen matches between some of the world's most talented footballing nations. With thirty-two teams to choose from, just picking one winner was surely a formality to get things rolling. Probably. Twelve different teams were chosen at this first hurdle, with mixed success. @Batard became the first casualty of the competition on Day Two, having to settle for the consolation prize of his country winning the World Cup after Morocco came out on the wrong end of a dour 1-0 loss to Iran. World Cup hosts Russia may have made a dream start, upsetting the higher-ranked Saudi Arabia 5-0 on Opening Day and carrying five Standers into the Second Round, but Last Man Standing host @RandoEFC, along with @tlr and @SirBalon were let down by Messi and Argentina as Leo's missed penalty saw them draw 1-1 with Iceland. Germany's shock 1-0 loss to Mexico in their opening game set the tone for a woeful defence of their 2014 crown and sent @The Palace Fan packing too, before Group H claimed a host of casualties - Colombia's loss to Japan catching out @StefBWFC, @Inverted and @Panna King and Senegal dancing on the graves of @Harvsky and @Eco after seeing off Poland. Elsewhere, Belgium, Russia and Croatia were all popular and successful picks in the first round of games, with Serbia, England, France, Sweden and Uruguay also to thank for carrying contenders into the next round. Survivors: 25 Round Two After the drama of the first round of group games - Russia on fire, Germany stunned, Spain and Portugal's six-goal thriller, the second round of matches saw something of a lull in Russia, and in the Last Man Standing contest. With a whopping 17 of the 25 remaining contenders backing Uruguay, who were one of many sides to settle for 1-0 wins in this round of fixtures, and the other 8 successfully backing either England, Portugal or Brazil, there was no blood spilt at this stage on TF365. On the pitch, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Peru and Costa Rica were amongst the first teams to start packing their bags for a flight home after notching up back to back defeats. Survivors: 25 Round Three The uneventful Round Two proved to be the calm before the storm, with over half of the remaining contenders falling at the third stage of the competition. Germany. After coming from behind to beat Sweden and stay alive at Russia 2018 courtesy of Kroos' 95th minute stunner, the Joachim Low's men had the world muttering "bloody typical Germans, they'll win the whole thing now". Well they had us fooled, and they had @Dan, @Tommy, @El Profesor, @Machado, @Asura and @Lucas fooled most of all, half a dozen people bidding "Auf Wiedesehen" to our little party. Round Three wasn't finished there though and had indeed starting claiming victims the day before when @Bluewolf's Spain and @DeadLinesman's Portugal were only able to draw with Morocco and Iran respectively. The results were enough to send the European sides into the knockouts, and two of TF365's elder statesmen back to the old care home. Mexico's hammering at the hands of Sweden saw to @Stan while Japan were content to lose to Poland in the knowledge that they'd still weirdly qualify for the Last 16 by having less yellow cards than Senegal, marking the end of honorary Russian @bozziovai's campaign in rather unlucky fashion. Yet another team that qualified for the knockout rounds despite letting down the people who backed them this time around were Switzerland, who shipped a last minute equaliser to Costa Rica through some combination of VAR and a penalty save that came back off the post, cruelly finishing off @BounceAroundTheGround, @shut up, @nudge and @Mel81x. It is the Last Man Standing after all . Survivors: 11 Round Four Thirty-two became sixteen, the goalposts got narrower and another giant packed their bags early in the first knockout round of Russia 2018. In probably the biggest WTF moment of the competition, @Devon Von Devon backed Russia to beat Spain in an effort to get eliminated from the competition and concentrate on the Prediction League. As it happened, the hosts actually managed to defeat Hierro's men on penalties, and sent @Teso dos Bichos, @Rucksackfranzose, @Marc and @Berserker out of the competition. Outside of the Spain-Russia tie, @...Dan looked momentarily as if he was set to go head to head with @Devon Von Devon in the remaining stages, but the five remaining survivors who backed Belgium saw their chances survive by an impossibly close margin when Nacer Chadli sent Japan home with the last kick of their thrilling Last 16 tie. Eventual champion @Viva la FCB will look back at this moment as the turning point in his championship-winning campaign. This is where we really separated the men from the boys as four of the remaining seven players after this round managed successful picks all the way through to the last round. Survivors: 7 Round Five World Cup quarter final weekend was a doozy, and I'm sure I'm not alone in recalling last Friday and Saturday night in a haze of lager and celebration. Russia's carnival finally came to an end as Croatia, backed by @Cannabis and @Toinho knocked the hosts out on penalties. England cruised past Sweden into the semi-finals, carrying @Devon Von Devon, @...Dan, @The Artful Dodger and @Viva la FCB along with them, while new tournament favourites France weren't backed by anyone in their 2-0 win over Uruguay, as the surviving elite began holding their big hitters back for the later stages. There was one casualty though, as @LFCMike saw Brazil huff and puff but ultimately fail to overturn a 2-0 first half deficit to Kevin De Bruyne and Belgium. Survivors: 6 Round Six Let's not kid ourselves, when the quality of competition is this high, things tend to be decided by luck, and Rounds Six and Seven were certainly a case of that in the Last Man Standing competition. Despite a flawless strategy up to this stage, @Cannabis and @Toinho were booted out in the Semi-Finals through a lack of options and no real fault of their own. @Cannabis was forced to pick losing semi-finalists England, having already used Belgium, France and Croatia in previous rounds, while @Toinho had a choice between France and England and went with the latter. Even if he had backed France at this stage, poor Anton would have been forced to back England in the Third Place Playoff in Round Seven anyway, and the bloody Poms would have seen to him one way or another. @...Dan and @The Artful Dodger had to sweat here, both also down to one option, but a successful one as France carried them past Belgium. @Devon Von Devon had a choice between Les Bleus and The Red Devils in the first semi-final, and got it spot on, backing Deschamps and his troops to carry him into the final round. Survivors: 4 Round Seven - The Finale Having had no choice but to pick France in the last round, the boot was now on the other foot for @...Dan and @The Artful Dodger, who both had a free pick for the last two fixtures of the tournament and successfully called France to be crowned world champions, along with @Viva la FCB who didn't have a choice in the matter. @Devon Von Devon's forced pick of Belgium also came through for him, sending all four finalists into a tie breaker. First, we had to see whether it would be Griezmann, Mbappe or Giroud to open the scoring, in fact it was none of them. When Mario Mandzukic inadvertently glanced an 18th minute header into his own net to open the scoring, @Viva la FCB moved into pole position, having predicted the earliest first goal (28 minutes) of anyone. The only way to stop @Viva la FCB from here was for Croatia to turn the tie around and win the competition for @Devon Von Devon but it wasn't to be.
