Storts
Barcelona players caused this early departure imo - the sensible thing would have been to allow Lopetegui to remain in place for the tournament, regardless of what he's doing next season, but of course the Barcelona section of the squad wouldn't allow this to happen and forced the hand of the Spanish FA. Shame really

There were numerous articles at the time that suggested that Madrid players were fighting for him to stay and Barcelona (apart from Iniesta) and Atletico players wanted him out. "Such is the intense nature of club rivalries between La Liga’s biggest clubs - Real versus Barcelona as well as their crosstown enmity with Atletico - that Lopetegui’s position became untenable as soon as news leaked." The smartest thing for Spain was to keep him for the tournament but clearly there was unrest from certain sectors which forced Luis Rubiales hand

Shame really I'm pretty sure it's because Real Madrid signed their coach. Whatever occurred after was because of that. Either way, the best Spain team was the Euro 2008 one, such a joy to watch. In fact it's the best national team I've seen full stop and that includes Brazil 2002. Unfortunately Luís Aragonés didn't continue and a more pragmatic Del Bosque took over. That Spain team were still incredible themselves, although a lot was taken from it and they should have scored more goals. Xavi, Puyol, Iniesta, Senna, Capdevila, Casillas, Villa, Silva(when he was class for Spain)... Incredible team to watch. They did everything right in that tournament. It did - but for me, it shouldn’t matter if he took that job or not. Why it should have an impact on his management at the tournament I do not know. The best thing for Spain was to continue as planned but clearly there was division from certain quarters.

Shame really Source? It looks like bullshit. Probably the footballers represented by Mendes and satellite agents (as well as apparently, Ramos) vouched for Lopetegui to stay while the rest of the Spanish team with no connection to Mendes enerved at the hipocritical stance of Lopetegui. And Rubiales took a decision based on that and on how stabbed at the back he felt.

The smartest thing for Spain was to keep him for the tournament but clearly there was unrest from certain sectors which forced Luis Rubiales hand That’s rubbish. All the players fought hard for Lopetegui to be permitted to remain and then on the day of the announcement 30 minutes before (hence the announcement being put back an hour) there was a meeting between the players, Hierro (technical director) and the heads of the RFEF where the truth behind the negotiations (between Lopetegui and Real Madrid) were brought to light to the players (except for Ramos) all backed down. Absolutely NO FC Barcelona player went against or put pressure on anything against Lopetegui or searching for him to be fired. Those are the facts! There is nothing else. The Barcelona players play with Real Madrid players in the national team since forever and there is no problem in that respect. It was the president of the RFEF Luis Rubiales that forced the whole thing coupled with one of Real Madrid’s biggest legends, Fernando Hierro who called Lopetegui a traitor to his face in a training session in Russia (there is a video of this).
