How much do you want your ISP to know?

So apparently this change is going to allow ISPs to track your data downstream and then do what with it? No idea really. But would you be comfortable with your ISP doing this? There are ways around it and you can encrypt the traffic but things like end-points, geo-fencing, demographics analysis will end up making ISPs richer because they have far more visibility to internet traffic than anyone (Google included imo). Its also not like what we do is really private.

If people want to snoop around my forum posts then they are welcome to do so, I have nothing to hide on the internet so be my guest.

I'm happy for the government to hack into private internets, TV's and other equipment as part of an anti-terror operation. If you've nothing to hide is there really a problem?

This issue really doesn't bother me.

Here's where I don't get it completely. This isn't the government going after your data. In some ways its understandable and covered by so many acts that will benefit countries moving towards safety or their citizens. This is a private corporation providing internet services to people that can now run deep into calls and read messages, etc. for their personal gain (once again not sure how much gain that is). So now, lets say you pay 1 unit for your internet and the ISP is benefiting on that by selling or using your data to gain 2 units a part of their data mining and we're not talking about irrelevant forum posts we're talking about purchases, bank payments, pretty much anything you do that requires an online connection going through your ISP to its final destination. Just because its encrypted doesn't mean there's no value in the data there.

They're all connected because corporations run governments and all sorts.  In my comment I was also adjoining the petition the British Government have made to have encryption access to social media and text communication software applications.

This is about behaviour control and manipulation by big business not whether or not you've been looking at kiddie porn.

Facebook and WhatsApp already sell your private messages to market researchers. They scan what you say in confidence to someone and try to use this for market insights. Many people talk about very personal and sensitive things online, in what they think is in confidence, they talk about depression, suicide, bad things that have happened to them, awkward things to talk about, sexy things, big business wants to turn your life into a data model to better work out how to manipulate you.

It's the equivalent of having your phone tapped and your house bugged. It's the equivalent of having Tesco track your eye movements and put microphones everywhere as you walk around the store so they can better manipulate you in the future.

Remember marketing is basically how to manipulate people into wanting something they don't currently want. These researchers are reading your private messages to see what people are talking about in a given area. Oh yes folks, they use your location as well, your name might be kept secret from the market researchers but what they can see is what traffic in certain areas of the country is like.

A company I used to work for was just getting into this when I was there. When I heard about how it works I actively made an effort to talk shit in private messages and repeatedly diss the Royal Family.

You get paid nothing for this. You don't get to opt in or out and don't get to share the spoils of selling your data.

We are dependent on WhatsApp and Facebook to stay in touch with people, we are dependent on our ISP's for online access, so our ability to change our behaviour to avoid this exploitation is very weak. That is where government regulation should come in. We all have apps on our phones that are using location services to track our movements.

Big business, private enterprise is becoming everything people feared governments would become 70 years ago.

You made the long post of what I was getting at.  Anyone that thinks "I'm not hiding anything" or "They're just looking out for our best interests" are either innocent or don't see everything that's happening.

That doesn't bother me either, I can spare the odd 40p.
