Next Rangers Manager

football forum

Recommended Posts

By all accounts the Rangers board appear likely to appoint a Director of Football to go along with a new manager.  Current odds look as follows:

Pedro Caixinha - 1/5
Gary Rowett - 5/1
Graeme Murty - 14/1
Derick McInnes - 18/1
Alex Neil - 18/1
Alex McLeish - 20/1
(odds from SkyBet)

From some of the football phone-ins, it appears that a lot of Rangers fans want to see Alex McLeish given the managerial role.

Thoughts?

Why is it taking so long?

I think they want to get it right and are doing their research as a result.  It doesn't look the most attractive offer right now and they appear to be backing Murty as caretaker for the time being.  There was some suggestion they were going to appoint the Director of Football first and then look towards a manager thereafter.

Billy Davies was also in the mix, which seemed a popular choice with Rangers fans.

According to the above articles, Gary Rowett and Alex McLeish were both interviewed for the role as well. By the timeline unfolding, looks like the 'Director of Football' will not be 'above' the manager in the hierarchy. Ross Wilson does seem to have an impressive CV so far.

Odds for Murty now at 10/1 on SkyBet after yesterday's Scottish Cup result against Hamilton.  Not a significant amount in comparison with the other odds available but still a drop.

I have no idea who he is so I can't really feel anything. Hopefully he knows what he's doing.

What are you expecting from the club?  Is there any money? I wouldn't expect the rangers fans to expect anything other than a spending spree in the summer. What's your thoughts?

DOF

How it was reported previously:-

but but but,

it'll never work, they need to know who the manager is

the players won't like it

this is undermining the coach

Why do Hearts need a DOF, surely a guid  Scottish laddie kin manage himsell whithoot a DOF

How it will now be reported

Of course if we ever want to improve our game, we must follow the lead of our continental cousins

DOF is really they way forward as it allows for the input of a team of expects and does not apply the pressure to a single individual

not that im bitter or anything 😉😂

Whether you have a Director of Football or not doesn't guarantee success or failure. There is no point having one if they aren't good at their job.

I think too many clubs just look at it and think they must appoint one, to be seen as "modern thinking". Rather than finding people that could help a club and creating a role for them.

Over two months later and still no Director of Football has been appointed. Next season begins on June 29th for Rangers, so it's not like they have a lot longer to bring someone in and start making moves to bring in and move out players before they are back into it again. For the rest of the season they would need to have a proper assessment of the squad as it stands and play them in their actual positions, something Caixinha has been criticised for so far in his tenure.

A bigger job for the next appointment is to make improvements in the youth setup at Rangers. For a club of their size and significant resources, they have produced so little players of a good standard in recent years and current sit 7th in the under 20s league. Whether they don't have the right people or not, only having Barry McKay as a regular first team player from the academy is a poor output.

Sky Sports bring in Alex Rae and Kris Boyd to talk about it. Expecting Barry Ferguson and Graeme Souness next to complete Rangers Bingo.

Literally all the clichés have been brought out, but no actual worthwhile insights.

'He never understood the Club' is just a get out for unintelligent people to fall back on when talking about it.

Somebody was digging-up quotes from Michel Preud'homme about the challenges of managing Liege, and how he looked for players with the right mental resilience to handle the pressure of playing for Belgium's biggest club, talking about how that's the mindset Rangers need.

Forgetting that Pedro was saying exactly that kind of thing at the start.

"Understanding the club" is the exact kind of bullshit that contributes to Britain being a backwater when it comes to thinking about football.

Being a coach is about training your players in a system that maximises their qualities. That's it. A manager can either do that or they can't.

Rangers are a club that went bust spending money they didn't have, what is there to understand? If he's not good enough then fair enough but some people need a reality check if they believe that's why he didn't succeed.

How Billy Davies keeps on appearing whenever a top job in Scotland comes up in beyond me.

One name missing from that list which they really need to consider are Tommy Wright, St Johnstone manager. At least he's a better option than Billy Davies.

They may not get the most glamorous appointment but, rather than going for an appointment like Caixinha that was a huge gamble that specularly failed, they need a manager that they know will work.

With the state of the club, they just need a manager that can actually coach players to perform to the best of their abilities and function as a team. Someone who doesn't play up to the fans with ridiculous statements and doesn't isolate his captain and senior players.

And most importantly, someone who is capable of beating the fourth best team in Luxembourg. It may seem simple, but somehow the Rangers board failed last time to find someone.
