I'm no expert on Spanish football and Madrid but I don't see how Conte is a good fit in any way.

In Spain Conte is seen as a coach that doesn’t take any crap from players and I think the belief is that Florentino Pérez sees issues in the dressing room (which there are and big ones but then again this always occurs with them every 2 to 3 years in the last 15 years) and that’s why he signed Mourinho last time around. But because Mourinho would cause such a major storm, Conte is believed to be the more moderate appointment.

But Ramos is apparently supposed to have said thst Conte would have to earn respect and believe me, that’s already a very bad start if true and smells of the Benítez appointment where the big players went to war on him.

I have no idea why but the news coming through on Conte's appointment is that it will cost €10m.  So adding that to the €18m... €28m is almost a round €30m for a club president that sacked his director for football 8 years ago (Jorge Valdano) at Mourinho's request so he could acquire more power at a club where coaches find it difficult to achieve this and with that Florentino Pérez has ruled the club with an iron rod ever since. None would say "look at the 3 Champions Leagues in a row plus one previous making 4" but as ridiculous as it may sound or read to some more innocent football aficionados, luck and a particular set of circumstances caused this when it could've been even more catastrophic.

The decisions made this summer by Real Madrid's president on all fronts from the manner in which he appointed Julen Lopetegui to his obsession with Neymar Jr and turning a blind eye to the necessities and executing a personal feud with guaranteed 50 goals a season in all competitions with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Guillem Balague reporting that Lopetegui will be sacked today and appoint Antonio Conte as the new manager.

This also just in, Hazard has appeared to arrive at Cobham unexpectedly with a firm grip on a pen as he walks inside.

So apparently the negotiations with Antonio Conte have hit a sudden stumbling block after various Real Madrid players have shown their total dislike of the choice as head coach. There has been contact from Real Madrid this morning with Chelsea FC for reports on his final few months and this is what’s apparently put the breaks on negotiations.

Roberto Martinez has supposedly been contacted although that deal looks even more complexed as the Belgian FA don’t want to lose the Spanish coach under any circumstances.

My inkling is that Real’s serious interest in Eden Hazard is the problem in appointing Antonio Conte.

One Real Madrid player is completely against Antonio Conte becoming manager

"According to a report from Spain, his appointment will not be welcomed by many of the Madrid players - particularly Thibaut Courtois.

The Belgian goalkeeper worked with Conte at Chelsea for two years and found life under the Italian difficult.

According to Diego Torres of El Pais newspaper, Conte's potential appointment has caused distress for Courtois,

He reportedly even suggested that Roberto Martinez, the Belgium national team manager, should be given the job instead of Mourinho or Conte".

The former Chelsea manager is reportedly out of the running to be Julen Lopetegui's substitute.

Italian coach Antonio Conte is believed to be out of the race to replace under-fire Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui. Following Los Blancos' 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday, the latter was purportedly on the verge of being shown the exit door.

Multiple reports which emerged from Spain after the match suggested that an agreement had already been reached with Antonio Conte. In addition, his official unveiling as head coach was reportedly scheduled for Monday afternoon. Having sorted out any impending legal issues with Chelsea following his sack, the process involving the 49-year-old manager's acquisition by Real Madrid was expected to go through without complications.

Nonetheless, a new twist has emerged in the ongoing speculations. According to Spanish TV station Cuatro, the ex-Chelsea and Juventus head coach has turned his back on the possibility of coaching Real Madrid. His decision is said to be one motivated by fear which stems from the fact that he might struggle to convince players about his appointment if Lopetegui is fired.

Following Sunday's El Clasico defeat Sergio Ramos fired a stern warning at Conte. Having been asked for his opinion on the Italian coach possibly arriving at Madrid, the 32-year-old defended suggested that he might not be welcomed.

"Respect is not imposed, it's achieved with work," Ramos infamously told reporters in reference to Conte's strict managerial style.

"We have won everything with managers that you know, and in the end, the management of the dressing room is more important than the technical knowledge of a manager."

At the moment, former Galactico Santiago Solari is said to be the front-runner to replace Lopetegui in the coming days. The current head coach of Real Madrid 'B' team could reportedly begin his term as the interim manager as early as Wednesday when the team travels to Melilla in the Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid sack head coach Julen Lopetegui

1 minute ago | European Football

Champions League winners Real Madrid have sacked head coach Julen Lopetegui.

The 52-year-old succeeded Zinedine Zidane in June but the crushing 5-1 loss to Barcelona in El Clasico on Sunday was their fifth loss in six games.

Real, who are now ninth in La Liga, have 14 points from a possible 30, their worst start since 2001-02.

The club said he will be "provisionally replaced" by ex-player Santiago Solari, currently coach of B team Castilla.

More to follow.

Outside of Madrid, the Spanish must be fuming. So much drama in the summer potentially costing Spain the World Cup, all for him to get sacked in about 3 months.

Next Real Madrid manager: How Julen Lopetegui gave up his country for a club and lost them both

The 52-year-old is a nobody at the top level after being sacked from the two biggest Spanish football jobs in four months

Miguel DelaneyChief Football Writer @MiguelDelaney

For Julen Lopetegui, the only real question isn't what's next, but what is going through his mind. Did he properly consider this outcome, that everyone else in the game seemed to believe was an inevitability, let alone a strong possibility?

The beleaguered 52-year-old has now been sacked from the two biggest jobs any Spanish football person can have – the national team and Real Madrid – in the space of four months, surely never to get either again, and having left both so, so unfulfilled.

It was the controversial nature of how he got the latter that of course saw him squander the former, and it's impossible not to wonder how deeply he now regrets that.

Some of this is of course just Real Madrid. Like with so many similar moves, president Florentino Perez demanded everything from his target – in this case, the type of commitment and face-saving deal for his club that would cost him the Spanish job – only to leave him with nothing, typically discarding him after mere months.

If Lopetegui was conscious of that, it was quite a gamble, and a risk - but now oh so much more. It may be one of the most costly career decisions the game has seen.

The former goalkeeper might really have squandered the chance at immortality, and everything that would have followed, for ruin at the top level.

That is no exaggeration. Consider the alternative, that did seem so possible, and means the decision to take the Madrid job on the eve of the World Cup represents such a sliding-doors moment.

The Spanish squad was not as talented as deep as the French squad, but they did seem to be playing in a style that actually accentuated their talents, playing their best football since 2012 in the tournament qualifiers. What's more, whatever about the wider questions regarding Lopetegui's managerial ability, his approach seemed to specifically suit this squad.

They were going into that tournament with everything going well, and maybe with a style of football that would have at least made them the equals of France. Spain would certainly have given them a game, maybe one for the ages.

Either way, they had a real chance of winning the World Cup. They were favourites. Lopetegui was at least within touching distance of the game's greatest prize, and a feat that would have made him one of his country's football immortals, his legacy essentially secure for the rest of his career. Even a final or semi-final would have only enhanced his burgeoning reputation, given how poorly Spain had fared in the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016.

So had he stayed, and achieved what should have been the bare minimum for his Spanish team, the chance of the Real Madrid job would have come again.

It might even have come at a more opportune time, when they had properly replenished a squad badly in need of renovation. One reason that Zinedine Zidane left, after all, was because he knew this side was at the end of a cycle but that Perez was not yet willing to fund an overhaul.

That is why this isn't completely Lopetegui's fault, why there might be some sympathy for him. He was trying something different and potentially progressive, but with a squad no longer quite capable of it. It should not be overlooked, meanwhile, that some of that squad just don't feel Lopetegui is of the level required.

That might of course just be the spoilt whims of a Chelsea-like group of players, a famously unmanageable group of egos, but what is actually relevant is the tangible effect it has. It just creates a resistance, and thereby problems, and thereby bad results. It also leaves a few questions for club leader Sergio Ramos, given he was said to have heavily vouched for Lopetegui, and Perez regularly canvasses opinions.

This is Real Madrid. This is also what has left Lopetegui high and dry. The fact he is a Gestifute client means he won't be found wanting for work, but that's not what his career could have been about. It could have been about the ultimate glory. He could have had everything.

Impatience – and you could even say greed – has ensured he has ended up with nothing, and is now a nobody at the highest level.

It might be one of football's most costly ever career moves.

I don't believe Lopetegui is as bad as the results suggest. Real are a joke. They seem to be looking for the short term solution all the time. I don't care that they've had tremendous success in Europe recently, I wouldn't want my club ran like that.
