Would you say the same if he refuses to go to Myanmar because of the crisis going on there ?

Yes, as I'd have respect for anyone having the balls to risk his/her career and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for something they believe is right and more important than football.

Plans to expand the 2022 World Cup to 48 teams have been abandoned by Fifa.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino said last year the expansion from 32 teams could be brought forward from 2026 to the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

The change would have required Qatar to share hosting duties with other countries in the region.

World football's governing body said after a "thorough and comprehensive consultation process" the change "could not be made now".

Fifa also said it explored the possibility of Qatar hosting a 48-team tournament on its own but has decided not to pursue those plans as there was not enough time "for a detailed assessment of the potential logistical impact".

In a statement, Qatari World Cup organisers said: "Qatar had always been open to the idea of an expanded tournament in 2022 had a viable operating model been found and had all parties concluded that an expanded 48-team edition was in the best interest of football and Qatar as the host nation.

"With just three and a half years to go until kick off, Qatar remains as committed as ever to ensuring the 32-team Fifa World Cup in 2022 is one of the best tournaments ever and one that makes the entire Arab world proud."

In November, Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said adding 16 teams to Qatar 2022 could create "many problems" and described the idea as "quite unrealistic".

Great decision and crap idea in the first place!

Maybe UEFA can take heed and return the European Championships to their former format so as to make them pertinent once again.

I bet they are gonna expand it to 32 teams in near future, that best third place team goes through kills the fun of group stages World Cup went through that period ultimately the Euros will also go for 32 teams.

The Euros has already been killed and it used to be the elite football tournament of the world because of the immense quality getting through to the finals, always much harder to win than a World Cup. But now it’s a farce and expand it even more makes it practically not worth the paper it was created on.

I can't see UEFA learning a lesson here because they are adamant that inclusion is more important than quality, at least that's the message that has permeated through most of the things that have come out about expansion. I agree with you, fewer slots actually breeds a fantastic appetite for competition and so what if countries that almost got there don't get into a competition, its motivation to try harder the next time.

Platini arrested for alleged corruption in awarding of world cup to Qatar for 2022.

The arrest of Platini represents the first substantial public move in an investigation into the Qatar decision opened two years ago by France’s Parquet National Financier, which is responsible for law enforcement against serious financial crime.

Platini has acknowledged publicly that in November 2010, just a month before the Fifa vote on the 2018 and 2022 World Cuphosts, he had lunch at the Élysée Palace with Sarkozy and Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, now the emir of Qatar. It was made clear, he has said, that Sarkozy, who was seeking huge trade contracts with Qatar, wanted Platini to wield his Fifa vote and influence at Uefa in favour of Qatar for the 2022 tournament.

Questioned by the Guardian about his decision a fortnight ago in Paris before the Fifa congress, Platini insisted that he had already made his mind up to vote for Qatar. His son, Laurent Platini, subsequently joined the Qatar sportswear company Burrda, owned by Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), which Platini has always denied had anything to do with his decision.

Platini did vote for Qatar, a vote, with others at Uefa, which the then Fifapresident Sepp Blatter has always said were crucial to sending the tournament to Qatar rather than his preference, the USA. After the award, Qatar Airways ordered 50 French-made A320 neo-family planes made by Airbus, and QSI bought and mega-funded Paris Saint-Germain, the club Sarkozy supports.

Please move it to Argentina/Uruguay.

That would be a disaster.

Lawsuits would kill FIFA. What about all the people that died building the grounds?

It should have never been given but it's too late to move it now. For legal and ethical reasons.

Why?

Surely ethically it's better to stop giving it to Qatar because of all the corruption and to stop further deaths in stadiums etc?

I'd guess that Argentina/Uruguay already have the infrastructure (in terms of transport and accessibility) and stadia in place to hold such an event.

Argentina is in crisis right now. If you need an urgency move, South America is not the place to do it. England, the USA and Australia would be better places to do it.

You can also look at it both ways. You can stop further deaths but you've also already wasted all those lives, so may as well go ahead and just do it.

I can't see it going down well legally though.

FIFA will get buried if it gets moved and then the real fun will begin because I guarantee you that even if its first initial is about Football the organization could give two fucks about the sport and will cover itself before anything else. I will say this though, it would be fun to watch the whole thing melt itself to the ground because I guarantee you QSI and Qatar will bleed this thing dry to the final drop.

So someone put so much thought into the infinity symbol and the 8 and everything else but they couldn't get someone with minimal font experience to make Qatar not look lopsided. What a wonderful world of design we live in.

Premier League players could face the prospect of playing games nine days before the start of the 2022 winter World Cup in Qatar.

Draft plans have been shared between clubs outlining the Premier League schedule around the tournament, being held from 21 November to 18 December.

Fixtures could take place on 12 November and resume on 26 December, eight days after the final.

The season would also kick off one week earlier and finish a week later.

It means that there would be only six weekends without Premier League games.

The issue will be discussed at the next Premier League shareholders' meeting in November.

Any such proposals would clash with national associations' plans, given they usually allow several weeks for their players to prepare for the tournament.

A winter break will be introduced to the Premier League for the first time this season in order to give players a rest.

But it has been suggested that will be scrapped in the 2022-23 season, raising questions about player fatigue.

Uefa has said a decision on the scheduling of that season's Champions League and Europa League will not be made until 2021.

Relentless for that season...
