Will Footballers Have Severe Problems With Pain In The Future?

football forum

I was talking to someone the other day who said doctors think that modern footballer will have lots of pain issues in the future. A lot of footballers take painkillers regularly. A lot of it is due to the intensity of the modern game and that they are pushing their bodies to far. What are your thoughts?

Depends how they manage it after finishing playing. Or if they continue playing but just not at as an intense a level as before. Some go in to coaching and therefore keep fitter than someone who removes themselves from the game totally.

There's a lot of factors to take in - did they have injury issues or low pain threshold to begin with anyway? Do they have any long-lasting injury issues following a serious injury during playing? Their diet must change as well, in addition to, as you say, pain-killers or fitness regimes changing.

They can push their bodies however far they want - but I'm sure they're aware of the risks that come with doing so even when they continue playing, let alone after retirement.

I think it is a bit different with team sports. With individual sports it is up to you how far you push yourself. With team sports there is pressure from the manager team mates etc.

Probably; professional sports are not healthy and it all takes its toll on one's body. I care more about construction workers or heavy truck drivers or nurse assistants or any manual laborers though as most of them live and work with chronic pain and related issues and can't afford to retire at their 30s.

I’m 35 and my knees are fucked from playing 1-2 1 hour+ games a week for 20 years now. At least these cunts get a massage, drive their land rovers with massage seats, go home and get massages by their pornstar wives and chill out after a busy 2 hour training session. And no, I’m not jealous at all

I worked as a labourer for 8 years as a labourer and I don't have pain but on a whole it is an issue. My ex was a nurse and she can't work because of back pain. The difference is though is that in these jobs there are procedures to stop this.  Not enough but you are advised how to lift to not lift to much etc.  In football  players are deliberately being pushed to far.

Why truck drivers?, because they're sited all day and don't rest properly?

I don't think it will be that bad. But some surgical procedures with lightning fast recovery times are sure to have repurcussion's down the line.

Sorry read this when I was away on Monday and forgot to reply afterwards. Prolonged sitting and not getting enough rest is surely an issue, but when it comes to truck drivers it's also combined with whole body vibrations, and that leads to musculoskeletal and circulatory disorders very often, especially those related to neck and lower back. I know and worked with many truck drivers; most have fucked up spines and vertebrae and poor circulation in legs after years of trucking. In general, many people are really unaware of how demanding a truck driver's job is. They often have this romantic notion of it as a job that gives you freedom of the open road where you're all by yourself; but are completely unaware of the stress levels  and what the job actually involves. The drivers are under a constant pressure from both their bosses/dispatchers and customers to deliver the goods at specific (and often very unrealistic if not impossible) times, at the same time they are also restricted by regulations and bothered by the police if they don't stick to them (i.e. they always have to find a way around them), not to mention overall traffic hazards, and driving is just a part of the job as most of the time they also have to handle their cargo themselves and that involves a lot of lifting while loading and unloading; all that while being generally treated like shit despite being vital to businesses and the economy of any country.
