Hannover 96 Facing Points Deduction & Loss of League License?

According to media reports yesterday, Hannover 96 face a harsh penalty from DFL for amending the club's statutes recently in a way that clearly violates 50+1 rule in several points. The club is threatened with a huge point deduction (in double digits) and, in worst case, loss of the league license next season, which would see them going down all the way to Regionalliga.

Will be interesting to follow the development. It's specifically intriguing to see whether the DFL is more keen in defending the 50+1 rule than it was in the Hoffenheim and RedBull cases.

At this point I already started thinking that DFL just don't like Martin Kind as they are surprisingly consistent in denying him the majority rights while they don't mind some others doing it haha. Any decision is not expected until February though.

Wow. Has this ever happened before? Are Hannover being made an example of i.e. setting the standards high for punishment so clubs don't do this again?

How far is Regionalliga from Bundesliga?

Until now only one Buli club has ever been denied licence, that was Arminia Bielefeld in the 70ties, so this procedure would be unprecetended. The 5 Regionalligen are fourth tier.

What exactly have they done wrong?

Not sure if you're aware of the 50+1 ownership rule in German football, but it states that no single person or entity may possess more than 49 percent of the voting rights in a German club's professional football division, preventing the sale of a majority stake to outside investors, protecting clubs from irresponsible owners and maintaining the democratic nature of fan-owned German clubs. Martin Kind (Hannover's president) has been long campaigning against the rule and trying to gain full control of the club. In August, club's supervisory board has voted to sell 51 percent of its shares in the club to him, formally giving up its influence on the club's professional football section despite fan protests. So in order to be able to officially buy those 51% of shares and take full control of the club, Kind applied for the exemption to the ownership rule at DFL but his application was rejected on grounds that he was not deemed to have fulfilled the requirements for the said exemption (which basically includes significant continuous investment in the club over the past two decades). Despite being denied the exemption, Kind and Hannover's board still went ahead and amended the club's statutes anyway, basically allowing for the club takover and de facto nullifying the 50+1 rule.

I'm managing Hamburger SV on Football Manager and if Bobby Wood is anything like he is on the game in real life then I do feel sorry for you. Needs about 76,422 chances to hit the target.

Sounds about right.

Had such high hopes for him, but he really struggled with the weight of it all and being quite incompatible with the rest of the team. Hoped he'd do well at Hannover, such that both parties would move on happily.

Plot twist: Hannover 96's members elected exclusively candidates, who opposed the statute's change in question for the supervisory board, who appoint the board/directorate. Reckon this could mean the 50+1-rule violating amendments don't come into effect, which would make the DFL punishment redundant.
