Life Before The Internet

Who remembers it?

We still had football manager games back then, but I used to take part in a postal Football Manager style game with random people from something advertised in a football magazine xD Similar to what we done on here with Harvey, get your team, buy a player, sell one, put your tactics in and the super computer will do it all and then you get a few pages of a report back in the post a few days later

The early years of exploring the internet were so fascinating. It felt like the final frontier of the wild west, so much innovation and creation. I was around 13/14 when I started getting really interested in the world-wide-web and there were many havens of creative content. Youtube was an infant, Newgrounds was the animation king, videogame journalism was relatively untainted, 4chan was 'dangerous', facebook didn't exist, social media was nothing more than a place to show off your profile, MSN messenger was revolutionary, google ingrained into the very fabric of life, Microsoft didn't steal your identity, etc. Innocent days. Porn was still relatively hard to get hold of and you couldn't wank your cock off to fifty videos at once, you could only rely on one compression artifacted porno from 1993.

It's smart phones that are the saviour. Long car journeys used to be a ball ache.

did you ever play the numberplate game? making words out of certain letters on numberplates xD

or naming cities starting with the last letter of the city the previous person named.

20 questions?!

or did you just sit there looking at the back of the head of the person in front of you xD ?!

I resulted to all of them. There was only so many times I could read the latest four four two magazines. Always an interview with someone like  Hernan Crespo or some overseas player I didn't care about.

I also remember playing a game which involved the basis of cricket and looking out for pubs (bear in mind I was about 11 or 12 so couldn't stop off at said pubs...)

Aim of the game is to get as many runs without losing too many lives.

You'd get 'runs' by spotting pubs and their names - if they had an animal/person in the name, you'd add up the amount of legs that animal/persons have in total and that would be your run count - so The Red Lion would be 4 runs. The Horse & Jockey would be 6 runs.  You'd lose lives (wickets) if you came across a pub name with no legs/runs to add i.e. The Ship.

Kept us entertained instead of being bored out of our minds.

Some things were better, some things were much more complicated. As with any technology, it always comes down to how you are using it. I love how easy it is to do any sort of research or learn new things now; in the past, you had to go to the library, buy specific books or magazines, etc. Internet made it easy to find information just about anything you want to.
However, we spent much more time outside and were more active, especially as kids, and nobody spent their entire fucking time staring into their phone. I also miss the feeling of being unreachable and completely disconnected after leaving the house; no calls (it changed after getting a simple cellphone later), no emails, no texts. Also, fewer distractions in general.

I remember it very well used to be you'd call your friends before leaving the house and then people would just show up wherever you were supposed to go. These days its a litany of "just around the corner" whatsapp mesages.
