Madeira crash: At least 29 killed on tourist bus near Caniço

At least 29 people have died after a bus carrying German tourists plunged off a road and overturned on the Portuguese island of Madeira.

Another 27 were injured in the accident near the town of Caniço.

The accident happened at 18:30 (17:30 GMT) when the driver lost control of the bus at a junction and went off the road, according to Portuguese news agency Lusa.

Pictures show how the vehicle stopped just short of destroying a house.

"I have no words to describe what happened. I cannot face the suffering of these people," the mayor of Caniço, Filipe Sousa, told broadcaster SIC TV.

He said all the tourists on the bus were German but some local people could also be among the casualties. Eleven of the fatalities were men and 17 women, Mr Sousa added. The bus was reported to be carrying 55 passengers, as well as the driver and a tour guide.

Another woman later died of her injuries in hospital.

The vice-president of Madeira's regional government Pedro Calado said the bus met safety standards and so it was "premature to talk about what caused the crash".

An investigation into the crash has been launched, with the bus company, Madeira Automobile Society (SAM), saying it has a "deep commitment" to finding out exactly what happened, local newspaper Diario de Noticias Madeira reported.

According to reports, the vehicle was only five or six years old and the driver was experienced.

The scene of the crash has been sealed off and the injured transferred to a hospital in the island's capital, Funchal, Lusa said.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is flying to the island to visit the scene, the agency said.

Prime Minister Antonio Costa has sent a message of condolence to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Reuters reported.

The German government spokesman Steffen Seibert tweeted: "Our deep sorrow goes to all those who lost their lives in the bus accident, our thoughts are with the injured."

Madeira was the scene of another fatal bus crash in 2005 when five Italian tourists died in São Vicente, on the northern coast.

This man died yesterday. Despite weighing little more than 6 stone, using a colostomy bag, and being almost unable to walk, he was determined by the Department of Work and Pensions to be completely fit for work (he scored nothing on any indicator of disability used by the DWP), and so instead of the roughly £120 a week he was probably entitled to, he had to live on £70 a week, whilst attending weekly job counselling and presenting evidence that he was job seeking.

He had to discharge himself from hospital to go to court for his appeal, where a judge took one look at him and decided the DWP was obviously wrong.

There is no economic necessity behind this, and it isn't a freak occurrence - it happens daily up and down the country and only some of the cases get picked up on by advice services who can take it to court. We are one of the richest countries in the world, but our benefits system has been designed to terrorise and humiliate the sick and needy, and even those on the brink of death.

The next time somebody complains about "handouts" and "scroungers" - this cruelty is the result of those words.

When there are police officers that abuse their power over people, it really shouldn't be a surprise that there would be people abusing their power even more over people when there's even less chance of being held accountable but this is still shocking.

Mustard gas leaking from vast underwater First World War weapons dump in North Sea

Deadly mustard gas is leaking from a vast underwater munitions dump created close to Belgium's North Sea coastline after the First World War.

The so-called weapons cemetery – containing 35,000 tons of unexploded bombs, shells and grenades – has long been considered safe.

Mainly German weapons were buried there in cement-filled containers under a two-mile sandbank close to the Belgian coastal town of Knokke.

But fears have been raised that the historic ammunition may create new problems after traces of both mustard gas and TNT were detected on the sandbank, known as Paardenmarkt.

The traces were found at two separate sites, Philippe De Backer, Belgium’s North Sea Minister, told parliament on Wednesday.

Carl Decaluwé, the governor of West Flanders, called for the site, which is less than a mile from the coast, to be cleared immediately after the revelation.

“Better to do this now than when the leaks have got worse,” he told the Het Laatste Nieuws newspaper.

But Leopold Lippens, mayor of Knokke-Heist municipality, said decisions must not be made too hastily.

“There are dozens, if not hundreds, of ammunition cemeteries in the North Sea, especially along the French coast,” he said. “Why would there suddenly be a problem in Knokke?”

Although it is now more than a century since the Great War ended, it continues to haunt Belgium’s seas.

In September, an intact German submarine was found on the seabed there – with the bodies of all 23 crew still inside.

Imagine being bullied for cleaning up the community to/from school and the school not even showing an iota of care about it or her welfare before it was too late.

A 13-year-old nicknamed "Trash Girl" by bullies for picking litter has changed schools after pupils assaulted her.

Nadia Sparkes won international praise and awards for gathering litter on her journey to and from school, and refused to let the taunts deter her.

Police got involved last term when she was shown a knife and punched at school, her mother said.

Her old school, Hellesdon High School near Norwich, said pupils' safety and welfare was of paramount importance.

Since 2017, Nadia has set off for school an hour early each day to pick up litter and put it in her bicycle basket.

She turned the "Trash Girl" slur on its head and embraced the nickname because it made her feel "like a superhero" - attracting more than 4,000 followers on social media.

But Paula Sparkes said her daughter was not championed at her school.

"The staff were not on her side to help and support her and we felt it was not appropriate for her to be there any more," she said.

She said police became involved last term when Nadia was allegedly shown a knife and shortly afterwards chased and punched by a pupil.

Norfolk Police confirmed it was called to an incident at the school and had referred a teenager to the Youth Offending Team, which was providing support.

"Officers also provided extra knife crime prevention presentations to all years groups," a spokeswoman added.

In a separate incident, Nadia had to sit through a class covered in orange juice that had been thrown in her face, her mother said.

"Nadia picked up a [volunteering] award from the prime minister earlier this month - it's a shame when you think what the school could have achieved with this, and they haven't."

She met one of her new teachers, Reepham High School's Matt Willer, when the pair were both nominated for an eco hero award.

Mr Willer, who runs an allotment project, said: "I'd heard of the amazing work she was doing collecting rubbish and how, very sadly, she was being bullied because she was doing something different.

"This hit a nerve with me and we discussed how Nadia might like to come and have a look at Reepham High."

Nadia had a "brilliant" start at Reepham after the Easter break and proudly wore her uniform made from recycled plastic bottles.

"She is literally wearing litter, it's like it's meant to be," said Mrs Sparkes.

Nadia's new school is about 11 miles from her home but she hopes to continue litter-picking en route to the bus stop.

Mr Willer said the teenager would be a "huge asset" to the allotment project.

"All the volunteers look forward to working with her as we all set a sound example about respecting the environment and living more sustainably."

Hellesdon principal Tom Rolfe said the school did not tolerate bullying and would not actively discourage a pupil from pursuing their passion.

"We promote an ethos that reflects high moral standards, a culture of social responsibility and fosters a safe learning environment for all students," he added.

"All students are respected and their individuality is valued."

Pompeo and Bolton have wanted to go to war with Iran in decades and the US is escalating

I meant that a lot Iranians abroad  seem to be okay with US bombing Iran which is bizarre imo, i get it you don't like the regime in Iran. But how can you want to support people who will harm and destroy your people and country even if you live outside of Iran.

Those people are insane. People who support MEK (who fucking fought with the people gassing Iran in recent history) and want the Shah son put in are the dumbest of the Iranians abroad.

I definitely don’t want a war in Iran, I have lots of family there.

The US is going to use this as pretext for the war with Iran they've been ramping up for over the last few months.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-48264499

"No evidence has emerged to show that Iran was involved. The affected countries are yet to assign blame." But at the insistence of Mr. Bone Saw of Saudi Arabia they'll pin the blame on Iran, and like the "WMD" bullshit of Iraq they'll topple another country and create a whole new host of problems for generations to deal with in the Middle East.

Iran would be insane to provoke a war upon itself through these silly attacks.

I suspect Israel provoking a war & framing Iran for it.
