Paul Scholes is poised to land his first managerial role with Oldham Athletic.

The Telegraph understands that Scholes has held discussions with the League Two side and is expected to be appointed within 24 hours.

The former Manchester United and England midfielder will join the club whom he supported as a boy, with Oldham 12th in the fourth tier after Saturday's 2-1 defeat away to Sol Campbell’s Macclesfield Town.

Scholes, 42, will replace interim manager Pete Wild and is the first permanent appointment since Franke Bunn, who left the club after Christmas.

Salford-born Scholes actually grew up with Bunn, the former Oldham striker, as one of his heroes.

Scholes, who won 11 league titles with United, was their reserve-team coach under Sir Alex Ferguson and continued to coach at the club when David Moyes took charge.

He is also part-owner of Salford City with fellow members of United’s celebrated Class of ’92 and had a brief spell as joint-caretaker manager of the non-league club in 2015.

More recently, he has attracted attention as a television pundit, offering often trenchant criticism of Jose Mourinho’s reign at United.

Scholes’s nephew, Ryan Scholes-Beard, is a 19-year-old midfielder on the books of Oldham’s academy.

Doesn’t he get linked every time they sack a manager?

If he’s a proper Oldham fan, he’ll know the owners are mental and impossible to work with and that working with people like that could have a huge detrimental effect on his managerial career.

Does he even want to be a manager though? He’s never been one for the limelight so I don’t see why he’d want that in a managerial role.

As a player he didn't like the limelight but he can't keep himself off TV these days with controversial-ish comments.

EFL could stop this one happening as it is a conflict of interest due to his involvement with Salford.

EFL Regulation 104 states that “except with the prior written consent of the Board a person, or any associate of that person, who is interested in a Club cannot at the same time be interested in any other football club.”

It becomes an issue if Salford get promoted to League Two which is looking likely as they are third at the moment.

Great point. Has this been mentioned by others on social media etc? Not something I’d thought of. Would be similar if Neville, Giggs etc took over an English club.

I’d argue it’s even an issue while Salford are in the conference. They are a professional full time team and Scholes could loan players to them for example.

They're struggling in League 2, so he may do okay and improve them. And then be hailed as a class manager and the next United manager.

One of the most overrated good players in Premier League history. Not a patch on Roy Keane/Vieira/Gerrard/Lampard.

But...

Zidane and a few ex pro's said he was good once.

I think there was a lot of respect for Scholes because he kept his mouth shut, wasn't fussed with the glitz and glamour like some of his team mates. That alone made him endearing, unfortunately he's decided to get on the gravy train of punditry and it doesn't do much for his reputation.

Paul Scholes: Oldham Athletic cleared to name ex-Man Utd midfielder as manager by EFL

Paul Scholes has been cleared to become manager of Oldham Athletic following an English Football League meeting.

The ex-England midfielder owns a 10% stake in National League club Salford City along with five former Manchester United team-mates.

EFL rules prevent a person holding roles with two clubs at the same time without the prior consent of the board.

However, a holding of 10% or less in a club is disregarded providing it is held "purely for investment purposes".

EFL rules on association and dual interests (EFL website)

If appointed by Oldham, the 44-year-old will take his first managerial role in the EFL with the club he followed as a boy.

It is understood Scholes has previously spoken to the Latics about succeeding Frankie Bunn as manager, but the matter was complicated by his involvement with Salford, who could be in the same league as Oldham next season.

This issue has now been resolved, leaving Scholes free to take up the job at Boundary Park if it is offered.

Scholes, who co-owns Salford alongside Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, David Beckham, and businessman Peter Lim, has previously spoken of his desire to take up a full-time coaching or management role.

His only professional involvement since he retired in 2013 has been the four games he spent as part of Giggs' backroom team when the now Wales manager took caretaker charge at Manchester United following David Moyes' dismissal as boss in 2014.

He has most recently been working as a television pundit for BT Sport.

Oldham, 15th in League Two, play Crawley away on Saturday, followed by successive home fixtures against Yeovil (12 February), Crewe (16 February) and Morecambe (19 February).

Academy boss Pete Wild has been in caretaker charge at the Latics since Bunn's sacking on 27 December.

Latics Appoint Paul Scholes As New Manager

Oldham Athletic are delighted to announce footballing legend Paul Scholes as the new first-team manager on a one-and-a-half-year-deal.

The former England International spent his entire career at Premier League side Manchester United where he made 718 appearances for the club in total.

Regarded as one of the best midfielders of all time, Scholes is part of an elite group to join the Premier League’s 100 club, gaining 11 top-flight titles in the process.

Winning everything in domestic English football, he has lifted the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup along with being handed 66 caps by his country.

The 44 year-old has coaching experience with Manchester United after announcing his retirement in 2011, however he would reverse that decision in January 2012.

In recent years, Scholes has been working with ITV and BT Sport before taking his first job in management at Oldham, which starts on Tuesday 12 February against Yeovil Town at Boundary Park.

Scholes will be bringing in former Latics coach Mick Priest as his assistant.

Speaking about the appointment, owner Abdallah Lemsagam said: “Paul has won everything there is to win in football.

“He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see.

“It’s no secret how much he has wanted this job in the past and how much he loves this club, so I’m very happy to bring him into our family at Oldham Athletic.

“Paul will have my backing 100% and hopefully we can work together to bring success back to this club.”

Scholes will speak to the press at 2pm today.

Welcome to the club Paul!

Shoulda listened to me Scholesy, lad.

They’ve had issues with wages not being paid and are now looking for their fifth manager in just over a year. It was destined for failure.

Looking through an Oldham forum apparently the ITK's are saying that the Chairman who's another nutter wouldn't stop interfering with the team, trying to have his say on team selection and even going as far as to having a presence in the changing room.

If all that it true you can understand why he's already called it a day.

So can I but after 8 weeks? I've said it before Paul scholes will never cut it as a manager. I mean he has the charisma of a pork chop
