My understanding is that he was on a very huge contract for his ability where he only proved his worth in the last season. We offered him a contract pretty much identical to what he was on. He wanted an improved contract given his performances and expected a Huddersfield, Wolves etc. Would give him those terms. We gave him until deadline day to make a decision. After that nobody was interested. He ended up on significantly less wages at West Brom where it hasn't worked out (they had five right sided midfielders!),  as a result we have ended up taking over that contract and saved ourselves a lot of money as a result.

I don't have a problem with it. He's got end product, he's an improvement on the players we have let go, he's on less wages than Puncheon and he's somebody that Roy Hodgson actually plays which is a rarity in itself.
