Chelsea Being Investigated For Andreas Christensen Transfer

The Football Association are investigating allegations that Chelsea made illegal payments to the father of Andreas Christensen when they signed the defender from Brondby in 2012. Documents which were uncovered in November revealed that Christensen’s father, Sten, was employed as a scout on the same day they signed the player. A Chelsea consultancy agreement stated that Sten was paid £11,400 per month plus VAT for four years, totalling more than £650,000. The contract began on July 1, 2012 – the exact same day Andreas joined Chelsea. The allegations were first published in Danish newspaper Politiken last November. They claim that Sten remained a goalkeeper coach at Brondby and did not do any scouting work for Chelsea. Payments to family members of minors are prohibited

In recent years, the Premier League have taken action against clubs for breaching rules around minors, with Everton and Liverpool both fined and handed youth transfer bans for being in breach of the League’s regulations. But the FA also have power to investigate breaches of rules around minors and are looking into the Christensen case. An  FA spokesman told i: “The FA is aware of the allegations and we are reviewing them.” Sten declined to comment on the allegations when contacted by Politiken last year, in light of allegations made by Football Leaks in November 2018.

Christensen, now 22, has played regularly for Chelsea’s first team in the past two seasons and has won 23 caps for Denmark. On the FA’s investigation into the payments to Sten Christensen, a Chelsea spokesman said: “We do not comment on speculation about confidential contracts or player-related cases.” Chelsea have only recently been handed a two-window transfer ban by FIFA following an investigation into the signing of foreign players under the age of 18. The world governing body found them in breach of 29 out of 92 cases they reviewed. Part of FIFA’s investigation revealed Chelsea had paid Bertrand Traore’s mother in April 2011 in order to secure first refusal on signing the forward, who now plays for Lyon in France. Traore’s mother was paid £155,000 and £13,000 went to AJE Bobo-Dioulasso, the club she chaired. Traore eventually joined Chelsea. Chelsea were fined £460,000 by FIFA, but they are appealing the decision. The FA were also found culpable by FIFA and told they must “address the situation” regarding the international transfer and registration of minors. They were fined £390,000. They are also appealing.

Any chance they get another transfer ban on top of the one they've already received? With all the information coming out about their dealings with youth players it would be surprising if Chelsea's appeal against their transfer ban resulted in a decision in their favour.

Well, FIFA are also investigating the FA. In fact I can see this either being reduced or suspended.

If the ban does fall in place, I can't wait to see what FIFA do to City and PSG.

To be frank, what a fucking waste of time and money by the FA. It's common practice across the globe to make inducements to parents and cover them up. I say fair play to his Dad for getting the payout. If you have a child who a club are willing to make a life changing sum of money to help support the family, and place the son/daughter in effectively a well paid apprenticeship scheme with a club, as if you wouldn't. The problem isn't that it's happening, the problem is that the clubs feels they have to operate this way due to rules around minors. The system is broken and can be circumvented, of course the clubs are going to do it. Let's be clear, no fine is going to stop this from happening and the FA and FIFA can't possibly and won't investigate every club. This carrot and stick approach to reward and punishment is absolute guff in the modern age. The more money that is pumped into the game the more clubs will seek advantages. The problem isn't that it's happening, the problem is the cause.

Yeah, I don't really see what Chelsea did as massively wrong or something that's rare in football. They're just the ones that got caught. Probably because some crooked FIFA bastard didn't get a cut.
